Body-colored steel wheels
I've always wondered on cars so equipped if they painted a set of steel wheels specific to the cars at the time the body is painted or did they just keep a glut of painted wheels in various colors?

Re: Body-colored steel wheels
Given the variation in wheel codes my guess would be the wheels were scheduled with the car build. Remember not all divisions painted the steel wheels body Color. Most Pontiacs I have seen had black wheels regardless of body Color on the A body. Oldsmobile usually has body Color wheels in both steel and SS III FROM 71 onwards. On any given line there could be 14x6 and 14x7 in steel and then the variations of SSII and SSIII. Then add plant variations.
