I have a 1969 chevelle SS that came with a 8-track player (stereo tape system). I have the 8-track player and mount bracket, but where the bracket mounts to the bottom of the dash under the ash tray i am missing something on the right mount hole. There is only plastic to mount to on the right side, Am i missing another bracket or something. The left one has part of the metal dash bracing to attach to and there is a center bracket hanging down on the ash tray to mount to the back of the 8-track player. Just need to figure out the right hand mount hole on the 8-track bracket. I would appreciate any help. Thanks Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I noticed your newbie status, Welcome.

My 69 Chevelle doesn't have the 8 track so I don't have any pictures of info to share but this site has some 69 Chevelle experts ready to help out.

Ryan

Some info here, but no pictures.

Hey Dennis. Welcome aboard. Dennis has a very nice 350 HP '69 Chevelle SS in terrific condition, original drivetrain, owner history, and very well documented. 4 speaker am/fm stereo - you don't see too often w factory kick panel speakers. Fremont car and appeared to have spent most of its life in California. I am sure he would appreciate any help from the experts out there.

Here's a few from my 69 Malibu with factory 8-track. Hopefully this will help. Figuring out the wiring is a whole new experience. I've attached a photo with the wiring for an 8-track with mono radio. Not sure if it is the same with an 8 track and am/fm stereo (that is a legit combo, ultra rare). There is a mounting bracket that goes from the back of the 8-track vertically to the ashtray frame. Almost always missing. Mine was screwed to the heater duct. That is wrong by the book, but that is the way the car was bought back in '95. Also, part of the dash bezel, lower right was chipped away (I think by the factory) to make way for the right side mounting bracket.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Phil,

Love all the options of your Malibu.....along with the AM/FM Radio and 8-Track, PB, PS, PW, VDL, Rear Defrost, Cloth Bench Seat, Remote Mirror.

Does it also have Tilt Wheel? What's the under dash toggle switch used for? What's the original mileage? 12 bolt?

Thanks everyone as i am new to this site. From looking at Phil's pictures my 8-track player might have the wrong top bracket, there's no cutout for the ash tray? Also Phil's ash tray looks like it has a extra bar on it so you can grab it, mine doesn't? Trying to learn how to add pictures, coming soon

Dan,

The toggle switch is for power to the ac compressor. The previous owner put it in. Otherwise, the ac compressor turns on as the upper ac control moves from off to vent. A problem with the switch in the ac control. Just never got around to fixing it. It is a hornets nest behind the dash with all the options.

Other options on the car include, tilt, ac, spd warning, lighting group, guard group, 12 bolt posi 2.56, power disc brakes, 350/300hp/th350, fiber optics and a few others I'm probably forgetting.

Here are a couple of pix of the build sheet. I found the left 1/3 under the rear seat and the full one on top of the gas tank (that was a great day!!). The full one is almost completely legible in person. Photo is not so great.

Not to hijack the thread with this, but validating the 8-track option for this car.

Phil,

Triple Green, from Framingham to boot <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif the only thing that would be better is if this was a COPO! Love it!

Will you be bringing her to the NOCC?

Nice car!!

What is that crap that they sprayed across Framingham buildsheets?

Nice Car !...My 69 Nova has the original U57 8-track player in it. The window sell sheet indicates it was a $133.80 dollar option. Quite expensive back then.

Helmut,

The glue across the build sheet was glue for the anti-squeak strips on top of the gas tank. This one got caught between the tar strip and tank. Luckily the build sheet survived fairly well.

Dan, I can bring this to NOCC show on Friday. Bringing the black SS and 300 hard top on Saturday.

Back to the 8-track. The assembly manual has some decent diagrams regarding the installation. Kick panel speakers (correct) and grilles are tough to find. Along with the ashtray/handle. Speaker harnesses are accurately repopped for these. Team Chevelle tech section has the correct part number for the correct 8-track player. Usually the 8-track player is stereo and the radio mono. There is a legitimate combo with am/fm stereo along with the 8-track.

Good luck with the install.

Dennis,

I assume the pix that Sam posted are of your car? I do not recognize that 8-track mounting bracket. To find your correct bracket, you might want to start combing ebay, craigslist and hemmings. I'd also consider contacting a few of the old car radio guys out there to see if they might have some left over parts. There was a gent on ebay years ago that went by "STLradio" that sold 8-tracks and related parts. Also put an ad in the wanted section on this site and Team Chevelle.

If that is your car in Sam's photo, I see the speaker harness plug there and ash-tray fiber optic cable. It looks to have a few nice options as well.

Good luck,

Phil Woj.

The correct mounting bracket for the 69 chevelle has the cutout for the ashtray. You will also need the "handle" that is riveted to the front of the ashtray because once 8 track is installed you can't get your hand under the ashtray to open it.

Better chance it was from a Caprice, as they had more options.
