1966 Chevrolet El Camino Pickup Truck / factory 396 A/T (not a clone) / SOLD

This car was built in December of 1965 in Fremont California and was delivered to Willows, Ca when new. I purchased it from the second owner, also in Willows, in 1990. It was very stock and original and virtually rust-free, with 66K miles on it at that time. Driven to roughly 74K miles before being disassembled.

As with many others, what basically started out as an “Let’s just paint the exterior” type of project turned into a body-off-frame effort. My intent was never for it to be flawless show quality trailer queen, more of a flashy cool car to cruise and enjoy, and it ended up coming out pretty nice overall.

Here’s some basic OEM info on the car:
1966 Custom El Camino / 13680
KK / Artesian Turquoise
710 / Two-tone Fawn interior – bench seat
L34 / 396/325 HP
M35 / A/T – column shift - originally Powerglide (now Turbo 400)
STD / 3.07 NON-posi 12 bolt rear diff
N10 / dual exhaust
A01 / Tinted glass - all
N33 / Tilt Steering Column
N40 / Power Steering
J50 / Power Brakes
K19 / A.I.R. (Air Injection Reactor = Ca smog)
Z19 / Convenience group: lights, remote mirror (removed by second owner)
U14 / instrument panel gauge package with Tachometer
??? / dash mounted bullet clock
U63 / AM pushbutton radio
G66 / Factory air shocks
A39 / Deluxe seat belts
V74 / Hazard warning switch

Runs very well. Engine was properly broken in, starts right up, choke works great, thermostat functions properly, etc.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Let’s start with some unfortunate info:</span> Back in the 90’s I brought the born-with engine to a machine shop for a rebuild, along with several other big blocks I was working on at the time. I typically had blocks decked on my Hipo engine builds, and they accidentally decked this engine even though they weren’t supposed to. Because of that mistake, I pulled all my engine projects from their shop and never used them again. This project was then put on a back-burner for many years. So just for clarity, the block in the car is the original born-with engine block, but has no numbers on the pad due to being decked. I do have the codes from the POP, and maybe even a penciled impression of the original stamp somewhere in my files, but I’m not a fan of re-stamps and preferred to leave the pad blank instead.

And some good news: Most all the other components under the hood are born-with original as well: heads, intake manifold, carb, distributor, air cleaner base, complete smog system (including hoses), exhaust manifolds, all pulleys and brackets, alternator, starter motor, complete P/S assembly, master cylinder, fan shroud, etc.

Non original under-hood items: water pump (generic replacement), radiator, power brake booster (I have the unrestored original), valve covers and air cleaner lid (I have the originals, need to be re-chromed), 7 blade fan and clutch assembly (I have the original 4 blade fan), front end wire harnesses (new repro).

I replaced the original two-speed Powerglide with a three-speed Turbo 400 (which coincidentally was from a 1966 truck). The T400 was not offered in the Chevelle/El Camino until 1967, but I prefer them to the P/G. I acquired OEM 1967 column shift linkage assembly, kick-down switch and bracket assembly, rear trans housing and driveshaft yoke, etc. in order to make this a clean OEM looking and functioning installation.

Original body panels, except RF fender replaced by 2nd owner, LF fender replaced by me during resto (original had a tough dent to straighten on the front body line/nose, and I had a much nicer straight OEM fender to use), and the front below-grill valance panel.

Reproduction dual exhaust system with the correct staggered rear exhaust exits.

This car was built at the factory with a large quantity of inspection paint marks all over the place. I only duplicated a handful, but stopped short of making it a circus car. I have pictures of most of the OEM marks in case you wish to reproduce them yourself…

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">What’s left to do (updated 03/02/2016):</span></span>
Install the new tinted windshield and rear glass (on hand), and trim (have all new repro trim, as well as the unrestored original trim).
A few troubleshooting tidbits I haven’t around to yet – very small drip from P/S pump, AM radio died (after installation, of course).
Front end alignment, headlight alignment, verify speedo calibration at higher speeds.
Touch up the paint on some suspension items (due to scuffing from floor jacks, jack stands, etc.).
Finish restoring the original Ca black plates.
Probably a few more minor items I am not currently thinking of….

<span style="text-decoration: underline">A little car history:</span>
The POP shows Harold Hendrickson as the original owner, being first sold on Dec 30, 1965, in Willows, Ca. He was actually one of the guys who pioneered fighting fires with aircraft, by retrofitting an old WWII airplane with some water tanks. Way back when, I tried to track him down but he had already passed away so I gave up that effort. On a research whim earlier this year, I thought maybe he had some children I could find who might remember this car and would have some stories to tell. Tracked down his son, Gary (who’s now into his seventies) up in the same area. Turns out Gary was actually the original owner of this El Camino, and dad Harold’s name was most likely just used for financing purposes. It will be 50 years ago this December he first got the car, and I promised him pics of it when it was done. He doesn’t do computers, so I need to print some photos and send them to him. He’s a vintage aviation guy just like his dad, with many WWII planes on his roster, and quite a few old cars to boot. Still drives his 1971 Ranchero that he bought new….

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Regrets:</span> If I knew this car was going to turn out so nice, I would have had the body shop spend a little more time on straightening out the bottom of the bed and lower rear cab area. My plan was always to install a rubber bed mat and add a tonneau cover, but now wish they put the extra effort in those areas to make the car even nicer.

Send me a PM, or email me at your convenience, and we can go from there. This sale is an effort to scrounge up some cash, so not really interested in trades…

Thanks, Charlie

Charlie, what a beautiful El Camino and you did it justice with such a great description........good luck with the sale. PS....this car brings back memories of when I was a kid growing up in Detroit and somebody ditched a stolen Camino nearly identical to this one in the alley behind our house.

Beautiful El Camino. Just curious, did they not follow the same VIN numbering conventions as the Chevelles with the 138 being 396's? Not real up on the Elcos. GLWS.

Good question Mark... 13680 indicates 8 cylinder Custom El Camino. If you look at the RPO list for 66 Chevelles, you'll see RPO L35, which was the 396/325HP engine option for the El Camino (the 396/325 came standard in the 138 Super Sports). You'll also notice that the 396 El Caminos don't say Super Sport anywhere on them, don't have the blacked out grille in front, no SS hood, etc. Same story for the 67 396 El Caminos. The first &quot;Super Sport&quot; El Caminos were 1968, and they were all SS396s.

Thanks for all the compliments gang. I'm sure this car will find a happy new home soon.

Couple other little tidbits... As was just described, the SS package wasn't available on the El Camino in 1966, but you could order the 396 engine as a separate option. I'm one of the few who chose NOT to add a SS hood on my B/B El Camino... which always bugs me when I see them.

The L35 325HP engine was the base engine in an SS, and (according to one reference book) in 1966 they built 44,362 Chevelle SS 396's with the 325HP base engine - out of 72,272 SS 396 Chevelles total.

For the 1966 El Caminos, only 1865 were built with the 325HP 396, out of a total production of 35,119 El Caminos. Very small percentage.

And only about 5% of all of the 325Hp engines produced were built with the K19 California emissions, so a reasonable guestimate (with extrapolation) of 100 or so B/B El Caminos were probably built for California use.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Interesting note:</span> The trim tag body build date on this car was 12D, and the car was sold on Dec 30th. That means the body was completed, the car finished, shipped from Fremont plant to Willows, and then sold to the original owner all during the last week of December - Holiday time!

My guess is this was special ordered and the original owner was impatiently waiting for it to arrive... what a lovely Christmas present!

Charlie

P.S. I will try to post some better pictures so you can see the color more accurately. If you Google Artesian Turquoise cars, the pictures will show you a wide variety in the shades of paint. I matched the new paint on my car to the original paint on the unfaded cowl section under the fender.

sure is a beautiful Elky... and I'm an Elky fanatic. I've had 6 (so far), 2 of which were 66s with 396 4 speeds, and a 65 327/300 4 speed buckets/console that was Artesian Turquoise. You're really pushing my buttons :)

I'm curious that you didn't add front discs... since you rationalized changing the trans... not that I wouldn't have made the same rationalization.

So are you going to install the dash clock? And do you have any documentation? I found the build sheet under the springs of the seat in one of my 66s.

Thanks again for the positive comments... Sounds like you've owned some pretty neat cars along the way. Wouldn't my car look lovely parked in your garage?????

Pondered quite a bit about converting to power front discs. Even though the performance would be much better, I finally decided I didn't want the underhood view to stand out as incorrect (with the dual master, prop valve, extra brake lines, etc.). Just a personal taste choice. Besides, the original drum brake parts were all in excellent condition and cleaned up nicely.

The trans was pretty much a simple bolt-in conversion, and would be easier to undo if it ever came to that. Besides, the original Powerglide was fairly toasted and I didn't care for the two speed drive-ability. FYI - the original P/G now resides in a superb ' SS 396 convertible, so it went to a good home.

As far as the dash clock goes... it's in nice shape but doesn't physically work, so it would need to be rebuilt. The main reason it's not on there right now is I just can't get myself to punch a hole in the new dash pad. Might be silly not to do it for that reason but the next person could always install it if they choose to do so.

The only significant docs I have are the original POP and booklet as shown, a couple of oil change stickers that show the mileage way back then, along with a handful of old registrations. The original owner told me he would look for some old pics and maybe some docs, but I'm not holding my breath on that effort. I had the original bench seat cover replaced with black back in the 90's (since I intended on changing the whole interior to black back then), but didn't find any paperwork in it at the time. Doubt if there anything under the seat foam, but you never know?

Here's a pic of the factory air shock filler line in the cab - in case you haven't seen one. This gets mostly covered with a cardboard interior panel.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/11/full-3493-34171-air_shock_line.jpg

And also a pic of the factory design staggered dual exhaust exits. Since the chassis was shared with the station wagon line, they staggered the pipe exits the same way in both applications. The passenger side exits very close to the rear tire, which was done to accommodate the spare tire compartment in the wagon. The drivers side exits further back from the tire (rather than being symmetrical to the pass side), so it doesn't exit directly below the fuel filler assembly. Odd looking, but correct.

For a better under hood visual depiction, here are some earlier in-progress engine pics before the fenders went on. As I said, the majority of these components are original to the car. I was lucky to have a unmolested solid car to start with.

interesting information on your rationale for not including disc brakes. I just stumbled onto something on a Corvette forum the other day that mentioned that a Corvette got dual master cylinders if it got the power option (added to disc brakes 65-66?)... since I think the dual master cylinders became standard on all GM cars in 67, whether they were power or not. In addition to the 2 66 396 El Caminos I've had, I also had a 66 SS396, all of which had Power Steering, but only one had Power Brakes... obviously no dual master cylinders. I've also had 3 67 Corvettes, none of which had Power Brakes, but all of which had dual master cylinders because it was standard. Hopefully I learn something new every day :-)

Interesting history you shared on the exhaust too. I know that lots of 65 Chevrolets came with resonators, and I think 66 also. I had a 65 L79 Malibu SS convertible that I bought in 66... exhaust had been modified to exit straight out under the bumper... so I don't know if that one had resonators originally. None of the 3 Chevelle/El Camino 396s I owned had the original exhaust and I've always wondered if they originally had resonators. I'm curious where you stumbled onto that information on the station wagon/El Camino exhaust. I've never seen mention of it before... and obviously I scour the forums for this trivia like you do :-)

And I'm curious about the color of the carpet you installed. My 66 SS396 had Fawn interior.... buckets, no console... and for some reason I think the carpet was a darker color, like the bottom of the door panels. A couple years ago I stumbled onto some pics of it on the internet... but unfortunately it seems the current owner had replaced the carpet... with a lighter color. http://nor-cal.chevelles.net/cars_davidschmidt.htm

And I share your dilemma with the dash top clock. My 65 L79 and one of my 66 Elkys had them... and I love the way they look, but it would be painful to punch holes in a new dash pad. I think I'd just pass the clock along to the next owner... in a box :-)

I'm loving all your pics !!!

Jim,

The carpet color is what was provided to me when I ordered the interior kit per the trim tag info - right or wrong I don't know. The original carpet was fairly trashed and I threw it away years ago, so I had nothing to compare to. Way back then, I was going to install a black interior anyway (actually purchased all of it as well), so I didn't care about the OEM carpet color. Glad I changed my mind to install the factory color interior instead. The two tone interior adds contrast, and I've only seen one other vehicle over all these years with this ext/int color combination.

The current exhaust system matched what was on the car when I first got it, which is how I learned about the staggered exit pipes. Unfortunately I threw all that stuff away in the 90's, but wish I didn't. The &quot;exhaust&quot; guys probably know all this info already anyway...

Since you like pictures, here are a few earlier door progress shots. Both doors have original glass, regulators, etc. The windows roll up and down like butter. The doors close so easily you have to be careful not to slam them.... Once again, having something good to start with really makes a huge difference.

In certain cases you have to be very careful when ordering interior kits as they often times use a generic colored carpet in many cases. When I do 70 Chevelles with Saddle interiors as an example I have to buy the carpet that is actually listed as a Buick color. Ditto for the rear package tray. And people wonder why I save everything original from these cars....

Why spend all your money at the auctions buying an unknown history car that you don't even get to talk to the owner about, when you can buy this nice vehicle for a very fair price. And I don't even charge a buyers premium!

FYI - this car is also currently listed on Ebay:

Well - they are no longer on the car or included (but can still be purchased as an &quot;extra&quot; cost option).

I'll try to get some good current pics to share later today now that it's not raining and will update some other details as well.

Still hopeful that a SYC member (Tom?) would be able to take advantage of all my efforts (and $$$) that went into this vehicle...

Thanks for the kind words Charley. I've been lucky to have owned some pretty cool toys. I just wish they were more valuable when it came time to finally sell them...

Here's a few higher resolution pictures I just took. Taking pics of shiny things is just not very easy. Kudos to you guys who take good pictures!

FYI - just to be clear, the &quot;new&quot; tire/wheel/hubcap combo is included with the car, but the rallies are not. The tires are used generic radials in OK shape. The wheels are stock 14&quot; steel wheels that came off of a 1966 Chevelle and are in decent condition. I did not paint them, they came this way. Apparently the hubcaps are 1967 style, and are in fair condition as well. The combo are NOT restored and would need to be if you wanted to keep them on the car. But for rollers, they look pretty good.

Meant to mention an additional item. A couple months ago I hosted a Certification Camaro-fest at my house. It was actually a lot of fun. During one of the days, I came out of the house and Jerry M. was over at the other garage taking a bunch of photos of the El Camino, especially the engine compartment details.

I went over and asked him what he thought, and he told me that I did a superb job on it and was lucky to find so many correct pieces. I told him most of the stuff was born-with original, and he was even more impressed. Just wanted to share this tidbit to let you know the opinion of someone in the trade who knows what to look for.

One of the days was a blue Camaro day:

Making some progress on this project. The interior is basically finished other than a few minor tidbits. Raised the as-is price accordingly, but the finished price is still the same.

Here are some quick pics from inside my garage:

Here are some quick pics from just now. The car sits at the right height now that the seat and hood are installed. Just need to install the glass (next week sometime) and take care of a few more detailing tidbits and it should be done...

New finished sale price of $28K (or $29K on Ebay)....

Sure would be flashy towing your &quot;other&quot; favorite car with this good old truck....

This El Camino has been sold and soon will be moving from Ca to the East Coast. It will probably catch a cold out there since it's been spoiled by sunny Ca weather it's whole life... Heck, it may even need snow tires !

Going to a new home where it will be appreciated and enjoyed, hopefully for many years to come.
