Hi Guys, I recently picked up a drag racing shifter. It came from an estate from someone who race 1st Gen Camaro’s. It was bolted to a Jerico 4 Speed transmission. There are 3 holes that someone drilled into the handle (not sure why??). The holes cut through the manufactures name. The letter in the name that’s damaged is possibly an “L” ?? Can anyone ID the manufacturer for me ? Any clue of the Era ? Thoughts on a value ?
I believe he raced mid 70-late 1990’s possibly into early 2000’s.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks Rob

Very early Long Machine, prolly late 70's. They've upped their game a bit since then.

Yep, Long Shifters.
VERY cool, nostalgic piece !!
In the early 2000's, a guy on Team Chevelle wanted a comparable Long to a Hurst CP and Long didn't have such a thing. I had a near NOS Competition Plus shifter that I sent to Long to use as an example to build a comparable model for street use. I THINK they did build a few, but I don't see anything like it in their lineup, so it may have not been a big seller and fell off production.

I looked at vintage Long photo's when I researched their products and the G-Force racing transmissions a few years ago. If I recall, there's a long standing relationship between the original founder of Long shifters (forget the original founders name) and G-Force Transmissions. I believe G-Force took over or merged the manufacturing of Long shifters and still offer an inline drag version, vertical gate and ratchet version with Long Handles.
Might still be someone from the original Long company involved in ownership of G-Force as well if I recall correctly?

4 speed shifters https://www.gforcetransmissions.com/shifter_4speeds.asp
5 speed shifters https://www.gforcetransmissions.com/shifter_5speeds.asp
My richmond 5 speed came with the H pattern shifter it is nice, and has a reverse lockout built in. The doug nash I have currently has the VN-1000 on it, it's a well engineered piece, with straight stainless rods.

Actually Long Machine and Tool bought out G & G Gear from Blaine MN sometime around 1990 or so from the likely retiring owner George Fluery.
G & G specialized in drag race trans and rearend stuff. They're specialty was ST-10's and made several race oriented HD parts including gearsets. I believe they started the steel midplate deal. For a number of years George had a mobile shop that traveled the NHRA circuit selling parts and doing repairs at the track.
Leonard Long I believe is in his early 70's and still actively drag races. He is the current and I think last 2 or 3 year champion of a N/A 10.5 tire class in the NMCA.

George Fluery...there's a name I haven't seen, or heard, in a long time. I took my M22 from my '70 454 Chevelle to him after it stripped all the gears off the cluster TWICE. I assumed the gears were weak from the original owner drag racing it when it happened the first time. I went to Iten Chev and bought ALL new gears and bearing kit and rebuilt it. A few weeks later, it did it again, both times drag racing at North Star Drag Strip. I took it to George and asked what I did wrong during the rebuild. He did some measurements and told me the case was irreparably stretched from launching and was junk. So there went the original M22 for that car to the scrap yard in about 1975. Found another used one on the MPLS Star Tribune want ads and was back on the street again.

Thanks to everyone for there help in I.D.ing this shifter. My next question, any clue on a value?
as I'm planning on selling at some point.
I understand it's probably a hard sell being kind of a unique/smaller group of buyers looking for these style shifters.

Ah, those were the days, eh???? When you could pick up your local daily newspaper and find a good used M22 for a couple hundred bucks.....:Can-I-Have-It:

Yessir, I miss those days too. Yeah, we can find most anything we want on the big www now, but usually not local and with a worldwide market, seems everything is overpriced now.
Bought my first Harley out of that paper in December 1997. Test drove it too and froze my ass off, but had a grin frozen on my face...

Hard to establish a value on these Rob? Obviously there's a cool vintage thing to it, but to those who buy this old stuff...they want cool but they also want it at a cool price. I'd think that the Facebook pages/groups that market vintage parts would be the best place to expose it to the market. Maybe price it at $500 to see how it's received as it is? Maybe someone with an old TriFive or someone with a Gasser might step up on it for a project car?
I have a couple old shifters that I bought as spares including a completely rebuilt (Dead Mint) Hurst Ram Rod, and nice V-Gate and also have another Super Shifter. I'm thinking of trying to score a couple wounded old Muncie cases and mock these up onto a stand that I would like to build into a Hurst style Display Unit. Cool old shifters to hang onto or play with.

Well damn, I recycled a broken case when I moved 2 years ago. I purged a LOT of stuff I had kept for too long. Never thought to keep for a display...:(

I've seen the common one that used to be in the speed shops, and have also seen some cool home made ones where a guy built the frame, hung a couple cases onto it, mounted a pair of 4 speed shifters and had a print shop bang out a sign that looked like Hurst made it all up. Looked real good when he was done and is easy to do as a shop project and a cool display piece.

Perhaps Russell Rosales can chime in here and post a pic or two of his buddies stand that he made up. There was also a few pics on IG but I've gotten off the media wagon now and don't have access to those pictures.

Pretty sure Leonard Long is still around doing shifters and G-Force sticks. I have a Long shifter on my Jerico. Leonard Long promotes and may still race in the “Pro Stick” series that I sometimes compete in. It’s a great group of guys, a great group of cars, and you had best be on your game if you wanna play.

OK...I found that picture of the home built Hurst display stand I had seen on Instagram. This one is complete with the 2 transmission cases used to mount up the shifters and makes for a killer display piece in any muscle car garage or shop display. For reference purposes...
