1967 Olds 442 Preservation

A while back, I was searching around for some miscellaneous small items for my Dad's 67 442. At that time, I had promised to start a thread once I started working on the car. So, here we go.

We found this car back in late 2015 / 2016 here on the forum. With the help of a forum member, we got the car inspected and thus purchased. It's a 26k mile largely untouched 4 speed car. A few forum members are familiar with the car as it was at 2016 MCACN and judged in Vintage Certification. At that time, Dad and I elected not to do ANYTHING and take it there just as purchased (aside from coolant hoses which are repops). The idea being, we'd learn about the car for what it was. Dad and I both car not Oldsmobile guys and did not want to fluff it or change anything to suit a judging standard. At the 2016 MCACN show, we met Paul (Canuck) and learned a tremendous amount about the car.

Fast forward to this summer, the original fuel pump started to leak. I had the car shipped up by me not only to repair the fuel pump, but to complete a very sympathetic cleaning of the car. Being the fiddler that I am, I determined the carb could use some attention (accelerator pump was out to lunch). After a simple rebuild of the car, and some ignition tuning, I am SHOCKED how good this car runs!

Here is a photo dump of some details of the car. I'll drive it through the rest of the summer, and really jump on this over the winter months. In fact, this car (along with a couple others I have in my shop right now) may push me over the edge into dry ice cleaning. We'll see about that.......

One question I have though...........
Are the VIN stampings on these cars rather light (much like Norwood produced 69's)? I can not really see anything where the VIN derivative should be. Same can be said for the transmission.

The Olds looks great,just as I remembered it. A lot of the underside will clean up with a solvent like Wash n Wipe. I use it in a spray bottle and lots of disposable rags. After that cleanup spray on Boeshield T-9 for preservation.
As for vin on parts Olds did not have a practice prior to 1968 of stamping components with the vin. Your numbers on the head are the indenting mark for a 442 engine.

The minor changes from 66 just really made the whole line of Cutlass's stand out above the rest of the mid-size GM's to me. 66 and 67 were such pivotal years design wise for all of GM IMHO!!! The vin would not be on the trans but the # on the trans would match the POP.
I looked at this car at your dads a few years ago and I would love to look at the underside for a few hours. The car has flaws that show how they were off the line.
The red tape on the positive cable is correct from the factory.
Neat car that should be preserved.

I just had a little fun trying to decipher the trim tag.
I’m sure you have already done this a long time ago.

05B = 2nd week of May
33807 = Sports Coupe
393-B = vinyl / blue / strato bucket seat
D-2 = Crystal Blue / Black Vinyl
W = tinted windshield only
L = 4 speed floor shifter
G = sports console
V = 442 trim

I got the fuel pump back from Fred Ballard a few weeks ago. Since I'm at a standstill on an engine build (waiting for parts), I thought I'd toss the pump in today.......

First time I've seen this thread, what an amazing 442 survivor!! I didn't realize these style fuel pumps could be restored, I'll have to look into this for the original from my GTO.

Those crimp style pumps are used on Fords too, they can be rebuilt to look new.

Crash has the tranmission right now. The trans was a little noisey and tough to get into reverse when warm. I suspect after all the years the car sat, there is a bearing inside that got pitted up in spots.

Been working on a couple of things including a new aquisition for myself. Details to soon follow.......
