View Full Version : 69 COPO chevelle buildsheet
Saw this over at Team Chevelle. Think it is an undiscovered one. Guy said he paid $500 for the car and is trying to get the original drivetrain from the previous owner. home1.gte.net/web22np5/document.jpg (http://home1.gte.net/web22np5/document.jpg)

COPO;
I am new to the COPO world. What information is on the build sheet that indicates that this may be an "undiscovered car"? Could this be a COPO car?
MikeA
This is a COPO Chevelle. First clue is the "KQ" code in box 29 of the buildsheet. This is the code for the COPO only 4.10 HD posi rear. Also on the lower left side you see the numbers "9566BA" which is the COPO code. It is "undiscovered" because the owner that just sold it was not aware it was a COPO. Hell, he sold it for $500. I do not believe this VIN was on Ed Cunneen's COPO sheets.

COPO;
Thanks for the explanation! The guy who bought the car has a great car story to tell and a great car!
MikeA
The only thing that looks odd is box 27 of the buildsheet looks like "MP" which is 427/425hp MANUAL, but this is a turbo 400 car. Should be "MQ". Other question is COPO 9566BA shown. Was thinking it should be 9562BA?? Any ideas?
Mr Yenko

I have 3 different COPO build sheets. Two sheets are 9566AA with MQ 8 in box 27. One has an M-21 trans. And the other sheet has a ZW1 COPO TRANS-M22. The last sheet is a 9566BA with MP 8 in box27. Could the 9562BA COPO stand for a double COPO?
The engine code for a COPO Chevelle TH400 is MP The 4sp is MQ.
The 1969 COPO Chevelle is # 9562 with eight different ECL codes (AA,BA,CD,CE,DD,DE,EA,FA)that specified the combination of the transmission, the seats, the springs, and the tires. In addition to the eight 9562 XX codes Chevy added two more - the 9566 AA and 9566 BA which are the same as the 9562 EA and 9562 FA combinations with the exception of tires. That makes a total of ten COPO numbers for the 1969 Chevelles. Yenko added his COPO 9737 (which included the 15x7 Wheels) to use as a combination with the COPO option 9562. The Yenko Chevelle is a double COPO. This is from the Chevy documentation that is included in Ed's COPO book.

The engine suffix code for a 1969 chevelle four speed is MQ. The engine suffix code for a 1969 chevelle auto is MP. If you are using Alan Colvin book to ID these numbers, he has a misprint on page 51 of his book. I have my build sheet plus several others which confirm this. I would post some examples but I dont know how to do that yet. Back to the build sheet at team chevelle sight, this sheet is not set up like any of the ones whick I am looking at.

As to the 9562XX, none of the 56 COPO's I have longed, have that code, all are 9566XX. Many of the copies I have, include Z codes, which I have most, if not all, broken down. My COPO Chevelle,with build sheet, has Four Z codes. It is a very load car, compared to most,(2 like it). If any one has a build sheet with the 9562XX, I would like to see/talk to you. I beleive this was the early stages, for the CHEVELLE.
Thanks guys, was using Colvin's book as well and was unaware of the misprint. Ed Cunneen's COPO Connection book shows 9562BA for an auto COPO Chevelle, but perhaps it is a misprint as well. this is from a Chevrolet memo date 8/2/69
A69COPO2 - Are you saying you have 56 COPO Chevelle build sheets? Are any of them Yenko Chevelles? I have a few build sheets for Yenko Chevelles and they have the both the 9562 and the 9737 number on them. They are not early cars. (June/July) I have some for COPO Chevelles (non Yenko) and they have the 9566.
COPO - The COPO Connection book shows 9562BA as a TH400 car and is not a misprint. The 9562BA, 9562DD, 9562DE, 9562FA, and 9566 BA are all TH400 cars according to the Chevy letter on page III-13 in Ed's book. They have different combinations of springs, seats, and tires, but are all auto trans.

Joe, the sheets I have for Yenko Chevelles do have the 9562 and 9737, along with the correct alpha code after these numbers. None of them have the 9566. Some of these sheets also list other numbers ie 9694, 9562(none of mine have the XX sorry A69COPO). Back to the MP, MQ question Ed has it correct in his book page 78. I am not a NOVA guy but I think Ed has the CTB and the CTC mixed up in his book same page 78.
James, I have the Jan '98 7th edition of Ed's book and the Nova codes on page 78 are correct. CTB w/4 speed, CTC w/auto. These are the same for the '70 Camaro Z-28 which was my first car I bought 20 years ago.
James Berry
10-28-2000, 12:36 PM
Thanks COPO he has changed this, I was not sure about the numbers for the Nova my copy is much older and has CTB as a auto. GREAT BOOK Ed.
James - There is no XX on the sheets. I did not mean that the "XX" is on the build sheet. I just put the XX in my post to show that there should be two letters there. From what I read the two letters were ECL codes (Exception Control Letter). GM used the letter change to show a variation or update was made to an option number. Instead of changing the numbers to show a change they would start out with an "AA" and bump up the letters for each change even if it was just a price increase. The letters probably have additional meanings. We use a three letter system where I work to show engineering changes or software changes. In our system one of the three letters is bumped up according to the type of change that was made. This is why the ECLs would jump from AA-BA then CD-CE. The ECLs are also used on RPOs. They are on many GM documents such as window stickers ,shipping documents, broadcast sheets, etc. Engineering needs to document any changes to aid product assembly and field service.

jAMES, IF YOU have the build sheets, with 9562XX, and the different codes, then we need to talk. I've been researching these,(some one needs to,LOL)and I'm really trying to help, in this phase of Car. Not that I don't like the other's, just know one really putting a leg out, that I know of. But then again, I'm new to this sight, and love it, it's great, alot of info, which needs to be shared. I think there shouldn't be anything uncovered.That's what makes this hobby so good. Ed Cunning can't do it all, couldn't see how. The ZL1 research is great, but very little on the chevelle area. So, if any one wants to help, just might be able to shed the light for others.What do you think? Thanks, Mike

Thank Joe dont know what I was thinking. (Brain Lapse). I agree with the F CARROLL thats new for me.

I think I have broken the codes. Ok, follow me now. After reveiwing all my build sheets, I've concluded that the 9562??, must have been for the Yenkos, because none of my COPO build sheets have it, they're all 9566??, make sence? As for the F CARROLL, never seen that before, is there a dealer, by that name? The 6B1591, is the Specail order#, as referance to block#60. ..Even with block#7 missing, look at block#28, "HF CX", all you have to do, is look real close. MIKE
The build sheet on Team Chevelle looks like the COPO sheets that I have. The difference on a Yenko Chevelle sheet is where the Team Chevelle one has " 9566BA" A Yenko sheet has 9562xx 9694xx 9737xx. Some also have 1001HA which I believe is for special paint. The odd thing about the Team Chevelle build sheet is the "F CARROLL". Is this a person's name or is this F CAR ROLL ? Never saw that on a build sheet before.
Anyone know the dealer this car went to? Looks like zone 35 and dealer 613.

Its possibly the customers name that ordered it since it was a special order. Not really related, but when I worked for a boat manufacturer we had build sheets and they would have a customer name on them if they were a special order instead of a regular dealer order, similar to what is on the COPO buildsheets, they have a dealer and zone, but never names other than the box where it is at most of the time.

There is a Carolina Blue LS6 Chevelle for sale out there that I used to own that has the customers name on the build sheet. I even called information and found him . Was kinda fun.

Make sence to me...I just never seen it, always something new....Any one have a COPO Chevelle build sheet with a 9562??, would still like to see one. Any have a COPO Built in a different plant, other then Balimore, MD. Email me at
[email protected]
I have not seen a COPO Chevelle build sheet with the 9562 number except for a Yenko but that does not mean that there were none. I would not say that all the COPO Chevelles used the 9566 number for two reasons. One reason is because a dealer like Berger, who knew about YenkoÃs COPO 9737 Sports Car Conversion, may have ordered it on some of the ten COPO Chevelles they sold and the build sheet for such a car may be a 9562xx 9737. The second reason I would not say that all the COPO Chevelles used the 9566 number is because I have heard that some COPO Chevelles came with steel wheels and small hub caps instead of the more common SS wheels. The steel wheel cars may have used COPO numbers 9562EA or 9562 FA which specified a different tire then the COPO 9566AA and the 9566BA.

I bought our COPO Chevelle new in August '69. It is a 9566AA car with the MQ engine, 4 speed and KQ rear end. Information that I got through the dealer in early calendar year '69 was somewhat vague and confused. We were told that the cars were to come with 15" wheels, a track suspension, and cold air induction. The engine horsepower wasn't given. The 15" wheels where probably the 9737 COPO option. The suspension on our car was standard SS396, not even F40. The cold air induction was probably referring to that which came on the Camaros and did not show up on the Chevelles. Our car came with the SS wheels and 14" F70 Uniroyal white lettered tires. All the Canadian COPO Chevelles that I have info on were 9566AA cars. 1001HA shows up on some build sheets and not others. ZP1, ZP8, ZV6, and ZN1 options show up with no information as to what they are. 9562 and 9737 seem to go hand in hand.
Keith, On all the Canadian COPO Chevelles that you have info on (with 9566AA )are they all 4sp cars? The ones with the 1001HA are they either Monaco Orange or Daytona Yellow?
This is what I have for the RPO's you listed;
ZP1 = COPO TIRES RWL F 70 X 14
ZP8 = MFG STATEMENT ?? (not sure)
ZV6 ?? (maybe Canadian only item)
ZN1 = COPO AXLE 4:10 POSI
Also I have seen ZK8 TIRE PRESURE DECAL on Canadian documentation but I'm not sure if it is Canadian only.

JoeC;
The ZK8 - Tire Pressure Decal option shows up on the '70 COPO Nova - Canadian Documentation, but the Yenko COPO Novas have the decal in the door jamb as well. We have concluded that this particular option was included in both the U.S. and the Canadian COPO Novas. This may also be true for the Chevelles.
The Canadian COPO Novas appear to have received some options that the U.S. COPO's did not; V48 - Engine Coolant-Increased Protec(antifreeze), ZQ7 - Canadian Warranty Booklet & Misc. Literature, W84 - Additional Fuel for Delivery. Did the Canadian COPO Chevelles receive these additional options as well??
Marlin
I'm not sure if a F70x15 tire will have the same tire pressure decal as a F70x14 tire. Something else to look into.

1001HA, is on most of my COPO build sheets, this isn't for specail paint color, because I only have 1, that was Monaco Orange, and 1 for Daytona Yellow, the 1001HA, is also on there build sheets. I have 12, of what I understand, of the 20 COPO Chevelles, shipped to Canada. If any one can sheid some light on the "1001HA'. I have know ideas. The build sheets,I have for the Yenko's, don't have this code. Not all Canadain COPO Chevelle's , had the V48, heavy duty coolant, either, or isn't showing. My sheet, starts with VIN:408346, and ends with VIN:412635, all built in Baltimore,MD. It shows more then just COPO's on it. There is 1 Daytona Yellow, which Peter Simpson owns, last I heard.If anyone, on this site, has other VIN's, from Canada, Please email me at
[email protected], I'm tring to account for all 20 of them. MIKE

Any Yenko Chevelle owners, have the code "B1939", on there Build sheet or on the last line of the trim tag? Or COPO Chevelle with "B1795", Please let me know, trying to get a count of how many were ordered, with these specail order numbers.

Most of the cars that I have information on do not show the 1001HA. It is not exclusive to the Monaco orange or Daytona yellow. It shows up with a dusk blue car. All that I have info on are COPO 9566AA 4 speed. Acquaintances claim to have information on 29 of the 30 COPO Chevelles to come into Canada.
V48 - Extra antifreeze, ZK8 - Tire pressure sticker, and ZQ7 - Canadian warranty booklet seem to be standard.
B1796, B1591, B1072, and B1603 show up on different build sheets on the same line as the 1001HA and COPO code. Could be a batch number.
The shipping list info on our car shows G84 for the 4:10 rearend as well as ZN1. ZN1 may refer to the KQ rearend rather than the KK 4:10 rear that comes with the L78 cars.
Our car, along with most others show the PL5 option and we have Uniroyal white lettered F70X14 tires on the SS wheels. One car has the PW7 white wall tire option. Our L78 car also came with the KK reaend and the PW7 white wall tires. I haven't seen anything to differentiate an L78 tire from any other SS396 tire. They were all F70X14.
Now we are really confused?
Keith and Mike, Can you double check the 1001HA numbers? The Dusk Blue (51 51) COPO Chevelle build sheet I have (maybe same one Keith refers to) has 1001AA not 1001HA. It also lists two different size tires on the same build sheet. PL5 F70-14 and P57 735-14. The build sheet on TC listed PY4 F70-14. The Chevy documentation mentions the L78 tire. I wonder if they mean the L78 engine or was the 735-14 tire also called a L78 tire size?
We should compile all this COPO Chevelle info.
The build sheet for my Chevelle, serial #403548, sold by Wagner Chevrolet, Wauseon, Ohio, shows FB1796 two places; in section 60 (SPEC. ORD.) and on the same line as the 9566AA code. I have build sheets for two other cars with one showing FB1072 and the other FB1603.
My car does not have the 1001HA or AA code. One of the other build sheets shows 1001HA and the other 1001AA.
The only big difference between these three cars is the transmission. Mine has an M22 and the other two have M21's. All the other differences are options not related to the drive train. Don't know if this is reason for above code differences or not.
My car has four of the "Z" codes: ZK8, ZN1, ZP8, ZW1. The other two cars have none of the "Z" codes. One of the cars has only the PL5 tire code, while my car and the third car have PL5 and P57 tire codes.
It would be nice if someone could collect all the available build sheet data and make an effort to decipher it. Any volunteers?

REDZ, I know your car, Black on Black, your car, is almost like mine, but yours, I believe is a Bench seat car, and mine is a bucket seat/console, tac/gauges,M22, chamber exhaust car. My car is specail order # FB1795, Fathom Green car, #404108, I also have the same Z-codes as yours. I've been researching these build sheets, for over Five Years. I would be more then glad, to collect all build sheets, and brake it all down. I have most of the Canada COPO, accounted for. Been trying to account for as many as Possible. As of now, I have over 50 COPO Chevelles accounted for and most are still alive, and well. I'll take the task, bring it on. MIKE

JoeC, all the build sheets, I have, are broken down, as you stated. The 1001HA, is on all my Canada COPO's, where as the USA COPO's are 1001AA, make sence? I know of the build sheet, your referring to, and it does cause some confusion, PL5 verses P57, don't know why, good example though.

Marlin, yes, all COPO Chevelle, sent to Canada, did have the same codes, I believe it was madatory. V48=heavy duty Coolant, ZQ7, was for the Canadian warranty booklet(both english&french writing, W84+additional fuel delievery. I beleive the ZV6=M20 four speed, as to ZV7=M21, and ZW1=M22. What I have noticed is, most of the COPO Chevelle's sent to Canada, had the NC8=chamber exhaust, and to think they only had a little over 700 Chevelles, receive this option. The Code ZR8 exist in 71/72 For Camaro Z28 Striping
and the code ZR1 exist for a Corvette in 71 or 72 this is a special vette 350 LT1 ( low Production)
and The Code ZR2 exist for a Corvette in 71 or 72 This is a special vette with 454 (very low production)
And for finish the Code LT2 exist This is a code for a 454 Prototype all aluminium built in 1970 for replacing the ZL1

JoeC, the ZP8, is for Manufactor statement of orgin,Fron USA to Canada and the ZP3, is for specail Paint, Daytona Yellow or Monaco Orange. Most of the build sheets, I have, for CANADA, state this. Kind of like today, when selling a car, over seas, it has to have it, to be free of duty taxes or when tranferring it to a individaul, of that country.

Does anyone have the SS emblem on the steering wheel of their COPO Chevelle? Most of them used the Malibu Chevy emblem but I have heard that some came with the SS emblem just on the steering wheel. Anyone know of a COPO Chevelle with the F41 front and rear sway bars? This is a very low production option on a 1969 Chevelle. I have not heard of any COPO's with RPO F41.
This Byrne Brothers ad from 1969 is one of the few documents I have found that mentions a factory equipped 427 1969 Chevelle.

JoeC, mine and the sister to mine, both have F41,but the rear sway bar was removed for ladder bars. And it's on my build sheet, also. Like I said, for a COPO, there are only two, that have the rare options combo, like mine. This is another reason for trying to get as many COPO's accounted for, to see how many are optioned out, like this car, on mine. Mine has the following options.
A01,A51,B37,D55,F41,F62,G32,G80,G84,J50,J52,*L78(L 72MQ),M22,NC8,PL5,P57,U14,U63,ZK8,ZN1,ZP8,ZW1. Shes laoded, and with two particial Build sheets. Special order#FB1795, Fathom Green, Trim 796,Dark Green Bucket
seats,B1795,1001AA,9566AA....Can we match the option list? The other COPO like mine, is a Le mans Blue, with white V-top, Still in Canada.
Mike - That sure is a loaded COPO Chevelle! The F41 makes it super rare. Here are RPO production totals according to a Chevelle book.
F41 Spec. suspension 722 units sold
M22 HD 4-speed trans 1276 units sold
NC8 Chambered exhaust 4143 units sold

Three of us bought COPO Chevelles at the same dealer. My car had the blue bow tie on the steering wheel. One had the SS and the third had the Malibu emblem.
Another interesting question on the COPO Chevelles is the underhood decals. In the 1969 Super Stock magazine road test of the COPO Yenko Chevelle there is an underhood picture. There are no visible decals not even a 427 decal on the air filter lid. The emission tune up spec. decal for the 396/375 engine could not be used so Baltimore would have had to use the 427 Corvette or Impala decals. Does anyone have any original underhood pictures or an unrestored car with decals? The sheet metal radiator top plate on my car is unrestored and still has the original Yenko decal with no signs of any other decals
A69COPO2
11-09-2000, 10:36 PM
JoeC, from what I under stand, they didn't come with the decal, on the air cleaner. But most put them on, kind of a 90% rule, if you know what I mean. I have talked to many original owners, and I get the same out come, no sticker, but end up putting one on. I won't be putting it on mine. I still have the original box arms, still mounted, with green paint marks on the bolts, and the original sway bar, was in the trunk. I didn't know the rarity of the F41, but I knew mine was very loaded, for a COPO. After researching the COPO build sheets, I have, I noticed that only one, was option out, like mine. There were a few NC8 and M22's. But as you might have noticed, no one has spoke on the buckets, console, and Gauge package.I need a few more NOS parts, then I'll start the restoration, but not until I have them.
Joe; I can not speak for the Chevelles, but the 427 COPO Camaros came with the 396/375 tuneup/emission decal on the radiator support. No 427 markings anywhere. Most factory line workers did not know that is was a 427, most thought it was the L-78. Theory is that Chevy did not want to spend the time/money on certification for 1000+ engines, and, except for bore, the same as the L-78. This is where much of the confusion on these cars came from. Many people who bought used 427 cars in the '70s thought that they had a replacement engine, because of the decal and because Chevy had not verified any of the 427 engine codes. In fact, many dealers were not aware of the 427 engines, thus Chevrolet Zone reps spent a lot time as go betweens when dealers would not do warranty work on these cars. This was really true with the 1969 Yenkos. I have heard several horror stories connected with the Yenko COPO cars, including my own Camaro. Tom
