View Full Version : FIRST BALDWIN MOTION SS 427 CHEVELLE FOUND!!!!
Last night, I just returned from a 2,000 mile trip and I wanted to share my excitement with fellow board members on the latest addition to my collection.
The car is the first Baldwin Motion SS 427 Chevelle sold and was a very well known car in the NY/CT area. It is the only 1967 Baldwin Motion SS 427 Chevelle in existence today. Extensive details about the car can be found in April 1968 "Speed and Supercar" magazine as well as the Jan. 1969 "Hi-Perf. CARS" magazine. I will try to post some scans of the magazine articles shortly.
This '67 Chevelle started life as a marina blue/ bright blue SS 396 L-78 car with a black vinyl top and was built in Baltimore. From the factory the Chevelle has an L-78, M-20 four speed, 4.56 posi rear w/metallic brakes, and bucket seats along with a few more options. The shipping date to Baldwin Auto Co. was June 9, 1967.
The car's original owner was Charlie Mason of Stratford, CT although all of the original paperwork is in his mother's name (Anne Mason) as Charlie was a young man when the car was purchased for $5,500 from Baldwin Chev.
Charlie picked up the Chevelle from Baldwin Chevrolet on 8/7/67 after Joel Rosen breathed his magic touch on the car. Prior to purchase by Charlie, Motion replaced the L-78 with a new L-89 427 engine which had 11:1 compression and the aluminum heads. The engine also got the factory L-88 intake, a 950 holley 3-barrel carb, a factory L-88 cam which was temporary and was replaced with a special Motion "J-grind" flat-tappet cam, the full "Super-Bite" traction system and the Motion/Mallory ignition. The factory 4.56's came out and were replaced with 4.88's, the battery went into the trunk, full gauges were installed, as well as a few more Motion goodies and the car was super tuned and set-up on the Motion dyno before returning to Baldwin Chevrolet for delivery to Charlie Mason. This process took six weeks.
Within two weeks of ownership, Charlie motored down to New York National Speedway (100 miles one-way on 4.88 gears!) opened up the headers, put on some small slicks and and set a new B/HR record (11.50 @ 123mph) and then drove 100 miles home to CT. The car became a regular winner at the track but was still used as daily transportation.
All of this is documented in the 1st magazine article (Speed and Supercar Aug. '68) with lots of pictures including a picture at the track and the famous picture of the car parked in front of Baldwin Chevrolet.
By the time of the second magazine article, (Hi-Perf CARS Jan. '69) Charlie had switched to iron heads, bumped the compression to 12:1 and was running a Motion Phase III 605 cam, roller rockers, the first experimental Edelbrock tunnel ram, dual holley 850's and a B&M Clutch-Flite trans. He was now running in the B/MP class in the 10's. The article states the car was still street driven and was equipped with a full stereo tape system with huge speakers on the package shelf for a "boss sound".
Following Charlie Mason's purchase of the car, his brother Joe purchased the 1967 CARS / Motion Supercar Club Camaro which held the AHRA national record. The Mason brothers were close with Motion and regularly test various parts on their cars.
The Chevelle stayed in the Mason family and was a street terror in the CT/NY area for many years until it was sold to a family friend by younger brother Eddie Mason 11-years ago. By then the car was quite tired out and remained in a garage until its journey to GA.
The car was listed on Ebay over two years ago, but did not have adequate pictures or a description and had a super high starting bid and reserve price and did not receive a single bid. While not sure of the authenticity, I flew up to CT shortly after the Ebay ad to see the car. After inspecting the car and the paperwork, there was no question it was the real thing, however, I was not able to make a deal on the car. I kept in touch with the owner and the muscle car market continued to climb and we were eventually able to come to terms. The car was still VERY expensive especially for being a project car, however, with the history and documentation it was too tough to pass up a chance of owning such a historical Baldwin Motion car.
The car still had the original "Car Papers" folder from Baldwin Auto Co., Inc and inside was the original P-O-P booklet made out to Anne Mason of Stratford CT signed by Dave Bean co-owner of Baldwin Chev. It also has the original CT registration and title application with VIN dated 8/28/67 when the car was registered and listed CT plate "EV-8875" These license plates are clearly shown in both of the vintage magazine articles. The car also has the original CT title and the NICB shipping records.
The Chevelle is still sitting in my trailer in the driveway and I'll pull it out later today and try to post some pictures and the paperwork in the next day or so.
Current plans are to restore the car to its as deliverd condition. As some of you know, I am also restoring a 69 Baldwin Motion Camaro, so the Chevelle will have to patiently wait its turn. At last year's Supercar Reunion I spoke to both Joel Rosen and Marty Schorr who was the author of the two magazine articles and they fondly remembered what a beast this Chevelle was when new. Stay tuned for more later. One heck of a good Father's Day present huh?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

SWEEEEET.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
The car spent its whole life in the Stratford, CT area. I picked it up in Trumbell, CT to be exact which is a little over an hour north of NYC for those not from the east coast. I also had the extreme pleasure of sitting in NYC Friday afternoon traffic with a loaded car trailer which took about 3 1/2 hours to get through the city.

cool find, does the family still have the camaro?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
Really glad to hear that car is still alive---Looking forward for your photos---Congradulation!!!!------
The 67 CARS / Motion Supercar Club Camaro was sold many years ago and if it still exists, its whereabouts are still unknown. Believe me, I've looked hard for it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
Joe G, do you have any recollection of this Chevelle? Did you go to NY National Speedway in the '67-69 timeframe? I am really hoping to find some additional vintage track pictures of the car. I'm sure they are around as the Chevelle was a regular for a number of years.
Congratulations on this find.It sounds like it has found a good home. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Got it out of the trailer into the garage. Cleaned off some grime from the rear end: #'s are KN 1118 B. Perfect match to the POP and the weld marks on the rear tubes from the Motion Superbite bars are all there as well. Ladder bars in the rear end picture I posted look like later bolt on Lakewood bars. Interestingly the rear build is way before the 06B car build date. The trans and engine were built May 23 and May 31st much closer to the June car build date.
Somebody just let me know that there is also a third magazine with a picture of the car parked in front of the Motion Performance shop. Hi-Perf. CARS Oct. 1968.
Looking for that magazine, but took this off an early Motion Newsletter--This might be the one, this is in front of Motion(Sunrise H'way)----- http://www.yenko.net/attachments/86908-cbm.jpg
Joe, great picture!! but not the one I am thinking of. It shows the MOTION sign in the background of the pic. I'll did though some stuff and try to find it too.

Thanks everyone for posting the pictures. What is the consensus on the brand of mags on the car in the picture in front of Baldwin Chev? The article does not mention any specifics.
One thing I realized is both this Chevelle and my 69 BM Camaro came out of Statford, CT. I've got to believe these two cars tangled on the street at some point. Joe G, do you recall a '69 Daytona Yellow BM Camaro w/side exhaust and an L-88?

Talked to Marty Schorr today for about an hour. He remembered the car well and thinks that he still has many of the negatives from the articles he wrote about my car. He also gave me an update on the Motion book he is writing and it sounds like it will certainly be a must have for any muscle car enthusiast. Marty thought it should be out by the Spring. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Incredible story. I live in Monroe CT, 5 minutes away from Trumbull. Just proves that you never really know what may be left in someone's garage. I grew up in Norwalk which is fairly close to Stratford, and although I was only 7 or 8 at the time this car was new, there were a few older guys on my street that were heavy into muscle cars at the time. They inspired me later on. I am still in touch with one of them and I will ask if he ever went up against either of these cars. Just in my small neighborhood we had (at the same time) a '67 GTO, 2 '70 GTO's, 2 '68 Camaro SS, '66 Nova, '66 Chevelle, '67 Chevelle,'69 396 SS Chevelle, '69 Z/28 (which later belonged to me), '69 Camaro - had a 427 in it but not sure if it was factory.

I thought those "organ pipe" speaker covers were basically cheap auto parts store accessories? I seem to remember the lowrider crowd (Bay Area, CA) used to favor those back in the 70s. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Another friend of mine had them and they actually sounded pretty cool--- the beginning of surround sound http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif they also had a reverberetor for the radio --sounded like you were in a tunnel---------------

Just had a nice conversation with Joel Rosen about the car and he certainly remembered it. In fact, he told me a story of when he was racing it in 1968 at NY National Speedway and flipped it over after losing traction with the skinny 7" slicks that were on it. that explains why the roof was replaced on the car. He said he was upside down in the car hanging by the lap belt and John Mahler had to get him out. He wasn't seriously injured, just shaken up but did go to the hospital to make sure he did not break anything. He also told me was that he was pretty sure that it was the only '67 Chevelle he built. He is going to look though his files and see if he has any paperwork from when the car was built.
One final thing he mentioned was Marty Schorr's upcoming book on the Motion history and that he had been working very closely with Marty. He was wondering if there would be demand for a nice hard cover coffee table type book and perhaps an autographed limited edition. I'm sure there would be quite a few site members that would be very interested. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Part of the issue is that Marty is funding the book with his own $$'s as among oher things he wants to remain free from the demands a publisher might put on the content and layout of the book. I think the question is whether there would be a better chance of recouping his investment by having a soft cover & less expensive book without as much color or a higher end coffee table type hardback book with better paper and more color. I vote for the nicer more expensive book and perhaps he could pre-sell the book to help offset some of the upfront costs of production. Also a Joel Rosen autographed limited edition could raise some additional $$'s as well. Thoughts?

I think the question is whether there would be a better chance of recouping his investment by having a soft cover & less expensive book without as much color or a higher end coffee table type hardback book with better paper and more color. I vote for the nicer more expensive book and perhaps he could pre-sell the book to help offset some of the upfront costs of production. Also a Joel Rosen autographed limited edition could raise some additional $$'s as well. Thoughts?

Well the books a long time coming---I have other"coffee table" type car books--one example "American Muscle"-Otis Chandler Collection which was done really nice--Quality etc.--Motion as well as other dealer memorabilia is still in high demand and IMO --the time is perfect for a book like this especially an autograghed edition if it materalizes---I guess they'll have to juggle some numbers on cost and get some kind of pre-order committment.----I'm in, for whatever!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

hello all, i am a big fan of 67 chevelles and wanted to find out if there is any news of this car or updated pictures thanks jp
No new info other what has been posted. I currently have a '69 Yenko Camaro under restoration and am finishing up a '69 Baldwin Motion Camaro and gathering parts for the eventual resoration of the Chevelle. The restoration of the Chevelle should start in '06 and should be complete for the '07 SCR.
That's really great news.
Your Cars are always top notch.
I look forward to seeing anyone of them.

First I'd like to say hello to all.The reason why I joined is because I know this car personally.I am from Connecticut(now living in florida)I was just up there for 3 weeks to visit & was at a local car show in Trumbull CT.& saw an old friend of mine & the chevelle & owner (previous) came up in conversation. That's when he told me the car was sold to a person in georgia!Well low & behold I found it here.My family owned a auto parts store in Bridgeport CT.for many years & the previous owner had an acct.with us for his business.I remember when he got this car because for many years this car sat at a Body Shop/Towing co.in BPT.When we were younger (about 25 yrs.ago) we used to drive by there all the time & BUG the then owner to try & buy it.We were always told "IT'S NOT FOR SALE" We knew it was rare because of THE "427" badging but did not know it was the ONLY 1967 BALDWIN MOTION CHEVELLE MADE.We offered him $2000 at the time which was pretty good $$.The story I was told that the owner of the Body Shop/Car back then ran into some "LEGAL PROBLEMS" & that is how my old friend purchased the car to which he sold to COPO.I did not know the mason bros.as I was around 7 yrs old when the car was new,But I do remember a lot a bad rides back then. When I saw the pictures here I could not believe it.Eventually we settled for "STD" versions of SS nova's,chevelles,Z/28's & even a 1970 buick stage 1.Ahh the good old days.Just thought I would share my story of this car with everyone & maybe add some new history that was not known.
Great story and info. It really is a very special car especially with the lengthy magazine features when it was new. I'm still collecting some parts for the car, but hopefully can get the restoration going sometime next year. I had a couple ahead of it in line.

Where is "Charlie Mason" now? There is a older guy named Chuck Mason here in Augusta area that ran a speed shop, plus is one of the most sought after tuners in the area.

Truly a great find. I am amazed on how close this car was to me. Makes you wonder on what still might be out there.

copo, is there any news on this car, updated or older pictures you can post thanks jp
Nothing new to report on the Chevelle, still in the parts gathering stage and it is in the queue waiting its turn to return to its former glory. This is truly an amazing car because of its extensive vintage magazine coverage when it was new and the fact that is was at times used by Motion to test new parts coming to the market. As an example, it was one of the first cars to run the new at the time edelbrock tunnel ram with two fours. This was when it ran 10's at the track and on the street. The other thing that I think is really cool, is our own Joe G. remembers this car at the Motion shop and it was one of the reasons he originally bought his '69 BM Chevelle.
I have two cars currently undergoing restoration and those take a lot of my time and car money. With two teenagers heavily into travel sports, it's hard to find car time these days.
The somewhat new news is during the summer I picked up a previously unknown Baldwin Motion find that a few on the board now know about and I will post some pics and info on a new thread before long.
Thanks for the interest. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The '67 BM Chevelle is still patiently awaiting restoration. I have continued to gather parts and recently scored a correctly dated 427 that was sold new over the counter at Berger Chevrolet in 1967. My 69 Yenko Camaro is on track to be finished later this year, so I can get another car started once it is completed. My 69 BM Camaro is close to completion as well. It is painted and just needs the engine installed and a few finishing touches. The shop doing the BM Camaro is EXTREMELY slow and I may need to pull it from them. Not much progress on that one in the past year.
The other more recent find is a '70 BM Phase III Chevelle, 1 of 3 documented by Joel. More details later.

Marty and Joel have both contacted me. Marty is looking for a publisher. He contacted me as he knew a gentleman in Sarasota that i bought a tach off of and the guy asked me what other cars i had and when i told him, he said he knew Marty and the next thing i know Marty was emailing me and we talked about a week later. He is still gathering info, updates, history on as many Baldwin Motion cars as he can. He and Joel are going to the Amelia Island show in February 2008 and the 69 Green car as well as a few other BM cars are going to be there. I think i am going. They are interested in helping with the resto. Joel called me last Thursday and he too was very helful and wants to be involved and offered his help as needed. He likes this car as it was one of his first and he told me the story of how it got away from him and he ended up upside down in it.

Interesting thread. Know the shop the car's at (Never been there though), and have the book (which is now out of print, correct?) Nice to know it's almost finished, and look forward to pictures (never asked, but hope it's the black, and not white vinyl top).

Would be Kool to see this car @ MCACN
It would be even cooler for me to walk in my shop and not see it there daily but as some of you know this car was more of a build vs restoration and it's a lot of work yet to be done. Nobody wants it's completed more than me I'm pretty much a one man gang with a few other restorations underway as well. Plus I do have a life outside of my business..There's a real slim chance the car might show up unfinished but don't hold your breath!

I'm friends with Joseph Mason on Facebook as he's a first gen Camaro guy (obviously) and he's a part-time resident of Naples where I live. Haven't met in person yet, but I'm hoping this winter to get together with him as he's a great guy. Just FYI, there's a good first gen Camaro group on FB called First Gen Camaro Connection where it's kept focused on the subject and is run by a bunch of good guys who love Camaros in case anyone is interested.
