What code am I looking for in a set or original '70 SS Chevelle wheels...AO? Also, any tips on identifying an authentic set? Thanks http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
YA code was used on early built 70 SS Chevelles too.Plants differed,but usually the Chevelle YA/AO change over was Oct./Nov. 1969.
Other Chevrolet SS models used these too.1969 SS Camaro-Chevelle-Elco-Nova & 1970 Deuce.
Among other things,look for either of these two suffix codes to insure they are for your application.Bring a REAL stainless capped lug nut to insure the holes are not enlarged.

One more newbie question on the wheels...the buildsheet shows AO in the wheels box...so I assume this is the correct code for a Jan 14th car?
Thanks again,
Yes,that is typical.
Prices today average $50.00 a bare rim needing bead blasting and repaint.
Some have paid much more if they are the correct date codes for a specific car.I recently paid alot for all 4 dated the same day of 1969.Some couldn't care less.

Just happened to come accross a pair of YA's while helping my cousin clean out some rooms in house next to his bodyshop.(well at least one, second one still has tire and trim ring mounted, and I didn't bother to check it)
Mr 70 would you mind explaining how the markings break-down/decode?
thanks

by the way all the pictures are of the same rim
...I noticed that next to the valve stem was stamped m48 but the inside had m18? kind of thought that unusual for code stamping, as I would assume that stampings would be the same number if referencing a date or application? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Makes perfect sense- Wheels were made in 2 pieces. The outer rim and the inner part. Those dates are for when each part of the wheel was made, not when the wheel was assembled. The assembled date are the numbers on each side of the valve stem.
Those are the dates & codes for the outer pieces in your second picture.The valve stem codes are when wheel was assembled.
M4=Manufacturer Motorwheel.
8=1968
11=Month,November
4=day
YA=Application code

so that wheel is correct for a 69 model?
I'll have to check the other one now, as my cousin told me he took it off of a 70 chevelle some years back.
thanks!
Yes it is a 1969 application,but your cousin could have possibly found that on a early built 1970 Super Sport too,(Sept.69 to late Nov.69 from buildsheets I have)
Although built nearly a year prior,I would imagine they used up all the remaining YA coded inventory before the AO coded wheel was tapped.I did see a early 1970 SS car with 12/27/68 YA rims,& looked to be authentic.
A.Colvin states the earliest assembled AO code he has seen is Sept.23,1969.
