I've seen the term "Day 2", and I have an idea. But what exactly is considered a Day 2 car?

A Day-2 car is a old car with modifications that would be done the "second day" of owning the car. Arguably the most common day-2 mod is to take off the exhaust manifolds/smog (if need be) and bolt on a set of headers. Hooker, Kustom, Hedmans... Other modifications include wheels... Cragars, T.T., Fenton, Ansen, etc. Vintage Tach... Stewart Warner, Dixco, Sun. Traction Bars... E/T, Lakewood. One of the most over sited items of day-2 trim, the bias ply tires... Mickey Thompson Indy Profile, with Wide Ovals or Polyglas GTs. Maybe some Drag 500s or Blue Streaks... I too have forgotten very this important aspect. Other day-2 trim items include Flex Flan, Glitter Steering wheel, Cal Custom Valve Covers (finned for that matter). Decals, tons of decals and the list continues for a long while.

Look at SC69Sam Scardino's 1969 Camaro Z28 for an effective study of the day-2 style trim. His Sweet Ride was just featured in the "Member's Rides Section". Hope this helps.

Day 2 ROCKS! Thats the way they were back in the day. Nobody bought a muscle car and left it bone stock. I would sure like to see more of it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

And don't forget to "toss" the original air cleaner in favor of a small chrome one(s), and the required set of S/W gauges under the dash. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Don't forget the Gabriel High Jackers stickers---the ones with the jacked-up jackrabbit doing a burnout...

All the aftermarket speed parts on a "Day 2" car must be from the year the car was built or earlier. No modern parts, wheels, etc., and if you really want to nail it, you gotta' run belted tires.

EBay: Look for anything related to "Day-2ing" a car to go sky-high in price. Once this trend takes off prices will too.

Day 2, when done right, is http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif and http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif and http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I don't think it will ever truly take off. Some of us have been into Day 2 for the last twenty years or so.Most people don't quite follow the concept or fall short of the look due to modern aftermaket parts ect....Too most a new set of Summit mags are close enough. Why should they pay 500 for a tach that might not work? If being cool were cheap....everybody would be doing it... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif Luv the Ol'Skool.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Try to buy a set of 15-inch 1960's peaked-spoke American TT's, say 15x7. 14-inchers are somewhat plentiful but 15's are, as SK said, "paydirt."

I agree, Day 2 might not become a national fad but it has already become a 'niche' fad among specialized guys like those of us here on Y-net. Try buying a still-in-box SW tach from the '60s. Cha-ching! Even the old $25 Sun Super II tachs are now fetching the bucks. How about Dana/Nickey/etc. welded-together traction bars a-la '67 Camaro? Ka-ching-ching! (Someone should re-pop these.)

Once something becomes "cool" the prices almost always reflect it. That's just plain Business 101.

Oh, and while many of the guys here at Y-net complain about "ePay," many of those same people watch eBay like hawks, looking for those old Day 2 'ka-ching' items, or anything else for that matter.

For the record, I watch eBay for all kinds of stuff. I love eBay. Made money there too!

Junkyards were always a good source for upgrades. 2bbl to 4 bbl, 3 speed to 4 speed etc. Those were the days when you could wander through the yard unbolting all kinds of great parts. No more!

My buddy's uncle owned A&D Auto Wrecking alongside the SF bay in Richmond, CA. Back in the late-70s and early-80s we would go down there on Saturdays and just get lost back in there. There were 1,000's of cars, mostly '60s and '70s stuff, but a few '50s cars too and NO IMPORTS! It was better than Disneyland. I got my first 327 from there (to rebuild for my '67 Camaro) and his uncle gave it to me for free. The place closed in the early '90s--EPA got'em. I miss that place. It was like being Huck Finn messing around the back 40 of that huge yard.

Oh, and Belair, there was a cherry '61 bubbletop 348/tri-power/manual car just sitting there once, way out in back. I was 15 (1977) and I flipped. The air cleaner was in the trunk as were the wheelcovers. It was baby blue and dusty but straight. My buddy said that his uncle might take $1200 for it but I didn't have that kind of cash. "Besides," my buddy said, "you don't want that, you want a Chevelle or a Camaro. That 348's a boat anchor." Boo-hoo.

I remember in the early 70s.......uni-lug mag wheels appeared, so is it okay to have them on your Day 2 70 Nova...??? Not everyone had gauges under the dash.....I didn't. Only one or two decals also. I had the J-Bolts too. Don't forget the shackles.....

We bought our first Chevelle new in '69. It wasn't long before the shifter started giving problems and finally broke. In went a Hurst Competition Plus unit. For the sake of breathing, and looks Hedman Headers were added a little later. When the 60 series Uniroyals first came out, they were only in 15 inch sizes so I bought some chromed aftermarket 15 inch rally wheels and added the bigger tires when the originals wore down. When the car goes back together I'm going to use the old rallys and the Hurst shifter again. Would that be day three or what? I even have one of the old original white Hurst "T" handle as well.
Our 396 car has the Hurst shifter, along with the Stewart-Warner tach and gauges that were installed by the original owner. Kind of neat stuff even if they aren't very accurate any more.
Sam is also right. With the leaned out carb (68 primary jets) and terrible timing curve the car really wasn't set up to perform. Emissions were being addressed to some extent. The shifter was balky and the exhaust system wasn't particularly effective. These cars really did need some help. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Day-2 was not all about performance. It was also about looks and keeping pace with your buddy who thought he a had fast Ford or Mopar. It was about change, the in thing to do. Loud mufflers, and rebellion! Tires sticking out because they looked neat. It was the sixties...flower power, ban the bra, protest the war! Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! It wasn't just thinking you were going to make your car a bad a$$ ride but to impress the girls too. It is hard for younger guys to understand why we just didn't flog the stuff the car came with. We were told through the aftermarket to junk all that stuff, your car would never run with the original parts. Get into the groove. Like groovey man!!! Actually some guys cars slowed up. They over cammed them and over carbed them. Tires were too big and the gear ratios to high. Headers and header mufflers leaned an already lean motor even more. On and on and on! But one thing is for sure I would NEVER trade those times and memories for anything except maybe my 2 grandaughters. The sixties started and ended that gretest era on earth. So let that be a http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif to ya, you youngsters! Tell em Schonye!!!

How about a 73 AMC Gremlim "X" 304CI. purple with white stripe dusting off a 69 z-28 302,4-speed black with gold stripes. As the story goes my brother and I were taking a buddy home from school when the Z-28 was in front of us going out of town. When we got out of town we saw a downshift from the Z so my bro says lets play.Needless to say we went past the Z in 2nd gear at 90mph,at which time the Z let off. What great times those were.

my car is built up to resemble a day2 old school theme.it's a 72 camaro ss with a 350 sbc all of the engine parts & accessories are all 70's vintage parts.here is what's on the engine : edelbrock TR1-X tunnel ram with early 70's holley 600cfm carbs, older mallory unilite and accel super coil, flex a lite "green" fiberglass flex fan and M/T finned valve covers.the camshaft in the motor is the GM mechanical "off-road" #140 cam and and it sounds nice.now the camaro also has the look of the 70's with ansen 15x4 slot mags and 15x10 us-indy slot mags.i've got a L88 hood with a grafted in 7" tall GM grump lump hood scoop to cover the tunnel ram.the interior is also 70's with a sun blue-line tach on the colum and a B&M quick-click shifter replacing the factory console http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Here is my 1970 426 Hemi Charger R/T-SE back when I first saw it in Jersey with 12,000 miles on the clock in 1987. It had been sitting since 1973 in this form. Fat and skinny Cragers, Parnelli Jones L60x15 rubber in the back and discount E70x15 fronts. A real day2 dinosaur.

You're right. The second owner had no idea how rare the car was (one of four produced) and was preparing to cut it up to be a race car. Luckily he and his buddies were drunk when they assembled the engine (and installed one of the pistons backwards on the rods). The engine broke a valve on start up and shoved it throught the piston and cracked a cylinder head. He then got pissed and rolled the car into storage until selling it to owner #3 who moved it to the spot you see in the photo. I bought it from him in '87. It hadnt rolled a tire "in anger" since late 1973. It has 16,000 miles on it now and has run a best of 12.77 @ 111 mph in street trim.
