Hi All, I'm fairly new here but I've been read the site for quite a while and find it very informative.

My Daytona Yellow 70 Z/28 is just about ready for paint and I'm looking for information on whose paint to use and whose to stay away from. I know there are differences in manufacturers and even paint batches but is there one that is closer to the original Datona Yellow that GM used in 70 than others? I hope to have the car judged at Carlisle next summer so I want to be as close as possible.

Any help is appreciated and again what a great site!

Interesting honest question I've never heard before. I'm one of those Camaros at Carlisle judges. Unless your color was conspicuously off, I doubt anyone would question it. As far as PPG, Dupont, Sherwin Williams, etc etc, I would hope all would have the CORRECT formula. Important would be the application of stripes and not burying under the clear. Also pay close attention to misc chassis BLACK shades and underbody Red Oxide if Norwood.......
You might want to join in the ORIGINAL forum at www.nastyz28.com (http://www.nastyz28.com)

P.S. I'm certain there are other members here, that would be able to advise more on which brand of paint has formulas matching ORIGINAL better than others

Chuck, Thanks for the feedback. It is a Norwood car will be getting the red oxide underbody and I'm being careful with all the different shades of black.

Hopefully I'll get to meet you next year at Carlisle.

I don't think any of the manufacturers have a predetermined 'perfect match', regardless of what a local paint counterperson might tell you. I believe the best way to match your original lacquer color with today's urethane single/two stage products is with a scan. Each mfg calls them somthing different, ie; 'profit' etc... but they scan into their computer a nice flat section of original paint, and then mix up a pint of paint. You blow some of the paint, and compare it - in the sun. Keep trying until it matches, it's trial and error, but it works!

I cant think of another person that has been more involved with restoring misc Camaros than BKH and the SCW.
Wish someone would communicate with him as to WHAT brand or product they or their painter uses......
But then again maybe as with the spatter paint topic that is pripority info........

I wouldn't think the paint he uses is proprietary http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

BKH's painter is Frank Arone, who uses PPG. There are no perfect matches, you have to scan the color in.

Your concerns to get the color right are well founded. Some colors are more troublesome than others and no one mfg has his "crossover formulas" all correct today. I went thru holy hell getting 67 Marina Blue dead on last year and had two orig paint cars plus hidden area paint samples to compare. I got it, but thru a custom mix modification to a PPG formula that was not right. On the other hand, just did a 67 Corvette Marlboro Maroon and PPG was amazingly right on as mixed, and a color that very often looks wrong and frustrated us in the past. As for Daytona Yellow, I may have saved you some legwork. I am doing my COPO Chevelle and have found Sikkens has this one nailed. Be careful with others as Daytona can easily take on a "greenish" direction we have all seen over the years on repaints. Daytona Yellow is a dynamite color when right on but looks like hell if off a little. Talk to me if you need more info or I could do a spray out panel and send it to you. I have lots of good area on my car to see original color and a 69 Corvette wiper door taken off a car long ago in perfect orig Daytona Yellow.

I have a LA built 70 Z28, Citrus Green, and noticed that the underneath has been undercoated. There is no red oxide primer as in the Norwood cars but a dark green primer color of sorts. This same color was painted inside the car sheetmetal as well. What would be the correct color for resto on an LA car? What was their normal practice for painting the undercarriage? Thanks,

Paul

The 2nd Gen L.A. Camaros were primered in a shade of BLACK.
I doubt if anybody could explain why your car has DARK GREEN on it ?????. Could you explain where your underbody is undercoated and/or to what extent. At Camaros at Carlisle 2005 the judges had a involved discussion about 1970 Camaros receiving NO factory undercoating other than the rear wheelhouse area and some of the trunk extension..
I'll try and show pics of my own L.A. 70' Camaro Survivor

I was just watching Dream Car Garage and Peter Klute mentioned that BASF (Glasurit) has all of the big three's paint codes converted to base coat / clear and the formulas are available on CD.
I have used Glasurit before and it is great to work with and is very durable.

The underneath may be a shade of black. I will remove some of the undercoating and check. Under the carpet is definitely a green color, darker than the Citrus green exterior. I will post some pics tomorrow.

Looks like there may be some dark grey/black primer there.
