Never knew of Body colored Rally Wheels either, love to hear more of how/when available. :beers: ~ Pete . |
The photo of the Z I posted in post #47 is one of these with painted wheels. Is it known not to be real or what?? It was supposed to be!

How would an assembly line painter know to paint the Rally Wheels body color on a special paint ordered 1968 Z/28? Is there some documentation? An Exception Control Letter Sheet dealing with this?

On the 70 Chevelle S.C. Tricentennial Editions, the wheels are painted body color, and the instructions are specifically called out on the build sheet.

Charley, that is a fantastic purchase. Congrats to you.

Rally wheels have an X for the color code in the Wheel color box if they are argent, other wise they would have a color code indicated.
Here is a 67 RS/SS 396 in special order orange with the wheels/ |
This car is freakin awesome, Charley.
Keep the pics coming. |
So based on the photo above, it's not just 1968 SP Z/28 and SS cars. It also applies to SP 1967 Z/28 and SS cars too. Or is it just those cars that were painted in "Road Commission Orange" - that's the color right?

I believe the color is 1968 Chevy Truck Orange
info from paint.com site....... "This orange automotive paint color is most commonly known as Omaha Orange. Other common color promotional names include Tangier Orange, Orange, and Fork Lift Orange. The color formulation has been used between 1930 and 1992, primarily by Chevrolet; but also by GM, GMC, Studebaker, Ford, Reo, Diamond T, Chrysler, Dr Pepper, Toyota, and HomeDepot. We have records of this color appearing on the following models: Chevy Truck, GMC, Studebaker Truck, Ford Special Order / Fleet, Chevrolet, Astro, Reo Truck, Blazer, Suburban, Chrysler Special Order / Fleet, Chevrolet Special Order / Fleet, and Diamond T Truck. See the full detailed list below." paint chart and code info here..... http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/paintdet...int=1968|Chevy Truck|Orange |
I personally inspected the in question Grabiak 68 Z/28. There is no doubt in my mind the wheels were painted Omaha Orange from new. The original WTGT tires where stacked next to the car as well. I have also seen a special order Verdoro Green Z/28 with a white VT and the green matching rally wheels. Why GM did this I am not sure, but it was put into use on these two cars and others as well it would seem...BKH
