The grill is cast in bone. And yes they are quite expensive. I just bought an NOS grill for $1,800 for my 69 Yenko.

How about if some of the experts chime in here. I have an 05E '69 Camaro that I believe has the original grille in it. It is black plastic painted silver (fathom green car). I have pictures of it "as removed" if it helps.

Well, first off I am a CNE (certified non-expert), but pretty darn sure the silver grills were all cast in off white for the assy line. I would suspect your grill was replaced. Having said that, I have no doubt there are more than a few guys here that have much more experience messing with true survivor cars. |
Re: 69 Camaro SS grill (which Black to use)?
And another thing: I would not paint the grill with Krylon. About the only rattle can paint I would use ona an exterior car part would be SEMS brand.

Re: 69 Camaro SS grill (which Black to use)?
Sorry if I've offended you Lynn - sure didn't intend to. My car was never restored and pretty original, but certainly could have had the grille replaced along the way. I was just wondering if there was more then one supplier & maybe different base material colors. A lot has been written about the colors of the finished grilles, but I haven't seen anything about different colors of the base material.

Well, crap. One of the problems with the internet is that typed words don't always convey the spirit in which they are intended. I was not the least bit offended. Calling myself a certified non expert was only meant to convey acknowledgement of those on this board with considerable more expertise to me. Sorry if I came across as being whiney. |
Re: 69 Camaro SS grill (which Black to use)?
When I purchased a number of 3957062 black grills in the early 80's I believe the silver (3957044) was already discontinued- that is why I am confused about what I have and asked the question about the base material. At that same time 2 of the other grills I still have are marked VIP(on the box) which is what a number of the parts I have received are marked before they are discontiued as well as that designation was used for rush shipment which mine were not
I will take some pictures and post in the next few days, as I have stated earlier there are no marks or indications that it was ever bolted up or masked and sprayed. I opened the sealed box sometime in early 2000 +/- a few years and put the grill aside still in the original box.- maybe a factory screw up? or someone purchased it- did a hell of a job painting it and returned it? Thanks Fred |
Re: 69 Camaro SS grill (which Black to use)?
Pictures would help. Don's original question concerned what paint to use on his grille, but how much of the back side of the grille should he paint? The grille in my fathom green car was black base material and painted silver, but the back side is still mostly black. Many of the survivor cars that I have seen with the bone colored base material grilles have a lot of the bone color showing on the back side. It would be great if Steve and some of the survivor judges could chime in.
