Can't really think of a good reason it would be the other way around (correct VIN tag, wrong trim tag). Why would anyone take a 4K tag and plaster it onto a 6-cyl car and leave the 6-cyl VIN tag in place?? Not like you are going to fool anybody that way.

50 years ago ? Crash the L78 car and buy a 6 cylinder to swap all the drivetrain to. I don't think many people would have given a second thought to the differing tags back then, it was "just" a car then, not revered as in the present day.

May have even been done in the 70's to fool insurance and get a lower rate for insuring a 6 cylinder car...we did lots of crazy things back then...:naughty:

Pull the cowl panel ans see if the partial is still there and if it matches the vin tag.

VIN: 123377N213683 which would have been built 04D.

I agree with Kurt based on this pic. I received a pic of the tag yesterday on my iphone and it was distorted to the point that the "O" in body looked almost round rather than oval. Much like the early repop tags.

But a drivetrain swap would not explain why they would bother to take the 4K trim tag off the "dead" L78 car and transplant it over to the 6-cyl body. And even a back-half partial body replacement won't explain it, because the VIN tag and the trim tag are both mounted on the cowl section of the body, so if the L78 cowl was used then the L78 VIN would be there. Has to be more to the story somewhere!

I'm also thinking the 6-cyl VIN was swapped onto the 4K body, especially considering there's an original looking BB heater core installed in the car. I'd love to pull the cowl and confirm the partial VIN.

@Scuncio, big can of worms with this car right, something tag wise is off. If the hidden vin matches the trim tag, then the VIN on the dash is another car. Sounds messy. Is the car for sale cheap?

Why bother swapping a trim/vin tag off a "dead" car ??
Why not ?? Trying to use reason as to why someone did this is like trying to find the 201st 1965 Chevelle SS 396... It doesn't need to make sense to us, or anyone, but the person who did this.
But they certainly left a bewildering puzzle for people to try to make sense of...

Maybe the 4k car was wrecked badly so when they repaired it, they grafted the a-pillar/door post off the 6 cyl car?

All conjecture as we do not have enough info or pics.
