Re: What is Considered a Day 2 Car?
Junkyards were always a good source for upgrades. 2bbl to 4 bbl, 3 speed to 4 speed etc. Those were the days when you could wander through the yard unbolting all kinds of great parts. No more!

Re: What is Considered a Day 2 Car?
My buddy's uncle owned A&D Auto Wrecking alongside the SF bay in Richmond, CA. Back in the late-70s and early-80s we would go down there on Saturdays and just get lost back in there. There were 1,000's of cars, mostly '60s and '70s stuff, but a few '50s cars too and NO IMPORTS! It was better than Disneyland. I got my first 327 from there (to rebuild for my '67 Camaro) and his uncle gave it to me for free. The place closed in the early '90s--EPA got'em. I miss that place. It was like being Huck Finn messing around the back 40 of that huge yard.
Oh, and Belair, there was a cherry '61 bubbletop 348/tri-power/manual car just sitting there once, way out in back. I was 15 (1977) and I flipped. The air cleaner was in the trunk as were the wheelcovers. It was baby blue and dusty but straight. My buddy said that his uncle might take $1200 for it but I didn't have that kind of cash. "Besides," my buddy said, "you don't want that, you want a Chevelle or a Camaro. That 348's a boat anchor." Boo-hoo. |

Re: What is Considered a Day 2 Car?
I remember in the early 70s.......uni-lug mag wheels appeared, so is it okay to have them on your Day 2 70 Nova...??? Not everyone had gauges under the dash.....I didn't. Only one or two decals also. I had the J-Bolts too. Don't forget the shackles.....

Re: What is Considered a Day 2 Car?
We bought our first Chevelle new in '69. It wasn't long before the shifter started giving problems and finally broke. In went a Hurst Competition Plus unit. For the sake of breathing, and looks Hedman Headers were added a little later. When the 60 series Uniroyals first came out, they were only in 15 inch sizes so I bought some chromed aftermarket 15 inch rally wheels and added the bigger tires when the originals wore down. When the car goes back together I'm going to use the old rallys and the Hurst shifter again. Would that be day three or what? I even have one of the old original white Hurst "T" handle as well.
Our 396 car has the Hurst shifter, along with the Stewart-Warner tach and gauges that were installed by the original owner. Kind of neat stuff even if they aren't very accurate any more. Sam is also right. With the leaned out carb (68 primary jets) and terrible timing curve the car really wasn't set up to perform. Emissions were being addressed to some extent. The shifter was balky and the exhaust system wasn't particularly effective. These cars really did need some help. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
Re: What is Considered a Day 2 Car?
Day-2 was not all about performance. It was also about looks and keeping pace with your buddy who thought he a had fast Ford or Mopar. It was about change, the in thing to do. Loud mufflers, and rebellion! Tires sticking out because they looked neat. It was the sixties...flower power, ban the bra, protest the war! Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! It wasn't just thinking you were going to make your car a bad a$$ ride but to impress the girls too. It is hard for younger guys to understand why we just didn't flog the stuff the car came with. We were told through the aftermarket to junk all that stuff, your car would never run with the original parts. Get into the groove. Like groovey man!!! Actually some guys cars slowed up. They over cammed them and over carbed them. Tires were too big and the gear ratios to high. Headers and header mufflers leaned an already lean motor even more. On and on and on! But one thing is for sure I would NEVER trade those times and memories for anything except maybe my 2 grandaughters. The sixties started and ended that gretest era on earth. So let that be a https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif to ya, you youngsters! Tell em Schonye!!!

Better still, take the grandchildren and their friends for a ride. Took a friend for a first time ride this afternoon in our 455 powered Lemans. He's still smiling. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif
