My neighbor came by to look at the Nova yesterday and he was reminiscing about his rally green 69 L-78 Nova that he bought brand new in 1969 for $3400.00. He insists that it came with a clutch fan and power steering. His name is Bill Sherman and his brother is Joe Sherman. He said that he got the car to go 12.9 at Lions with open headers and a hurst shifter. The car that he owns now is a early Falcon with a twin turbo Ford small block with nitrous that dynoed over 1200 horsepower at the flywheel. This guy knows his way around cars and he insists that his car old car had a fan clucth. After seeing the last post I wonder if he had a 1968 Nova.

I've believed it was due to the dimension of the radiator core and the proximity of the fan too it.Isn't it at it's very closest on the Novas? Possibly consider too,the Fan clutch has a longer attachment neck then the shorter fan spacer required on the Novas 5 bladed fan.

I believe the early assembled solid lifter 1970 Chevelles-Novas came with the Hockey stick design,and the later built,(around late Dec. mid Jan 70),started to receive the shorter over valve cover design.And because the Hockey stick design,(No room for A/C equipped),was used mostly on the 1968-9 models,I always chalked it up to Chevrolet using up the old inventory on the early assembled 1970 solid lifter models first,then started using the later issued over valve cover design,(A/C acceptable),more rapidly on the later 1970 solids like Nova-Chevelle-new Camaro and ALL the detuned engines now requiring A.I.R. soon afterwards.
I've yet to see ANY 71-72 vehicle with the Hockey stick design.

I don't think the Dual snorkle design had anything to do with the A.I.R. tube design directly,just a coincedence that the Dual AC & over valve cover design were both in useage at the same time period,before that dual went the way of the Dodo.

I believe the Dual Snorkle air cleaner was originally intended for the 1970 LS-6 Corvette only.
When that didn't get the LS-6 nod for it's late 70 debut,Chevrolet began to use up that air cleaner as much as possible by mingleing it in with the Open Element air cleaner before cancelling it the following year.

I had heard that the dual snorkel was installed late in the production year of 1970 for noise/emission regulations.. I don't know what that had to do with anything though. I do know of later production 70 cars that still had the open element air cleaner..

Chevy using up their inventory of the dual snorkel air cleaners makes sense.. I think sometimes we forget that Chevy/GM was thinking $$$$ back then and really didn't care what car got what on the production lines. They just wanted to use up inventories of their stuff...

Rick, I was most certainly wrong about Cumby having a L-78 Chevelle. What I meant to say, was that Cumby's Survivor LS-6 w/o cowl induction and having the Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner was a very good source of reference for 70 L-78 Camaro restorers.

What configuration of left smog tubes are the top restored LS-6 Chevelles using with and w/o cowl induction....

I am also looking for a survivor 1st design left hand smog

Most are putting on the over the valve cover tube even if it's not accurate for their early build,but either design will fit fine when Cowl Ind. equipped or not.
I believe it is due to owners not knowing there was a design difference & revision date for this tube,(as noted in the 1970 Chevelle Ass. manual),as well as most reproduction houses only carry the later issued over the valve cover design tube anyway.

1)Can you help me provide evidence that 70 Camaro L-78's should ONLY have the 2nd design, over the valve cover style of smog "tree" and hose ????? ..... as I have NEVER SEEN a as built picture of a 70 Camaro L-78 engine compartment.

2)I feel that the few restored 70 L-78 Camaros having smog are wrong, because either vendors like Hoedel and Greenhoe provided incorrect tree and hose or the L-78 owners copied 69 L-78's and installed wrong tree and hose.

3)Is it true that Crane Corvette supply offers the best repop left tree, however NOT correct as Original.

4)Any evidence that original trees were BLACK ZINC plated, even though well known vendors like Hoedel or Greenhoe may apply something else.

Below pics show 70 Camaro assy manual page. There is another LS-6 page (canceled/never built) that shows 1st design tree......and two examples of 70 L-78 Camaros with wrong left tree.....

Found my copy of the July 69 Hot Rod Magazine road test for an L78 Nova....they comment on the fan as follows: "A seven blade fan which doesn't have a vicious clutch is fitted. The fan makes a tremendous amount of noise at high speed, so while it does move a lot of air, this same action gives out the bothersome noise level. " they went on to talk about replacing it with a Flex-a-Lite unit for a future road test.....I think they were mistaken about the 7 blades....all conversations I have had regarding original fans for 69 BB's have been the 5 blade unit...who would have thought such a minor part would become so rare and expensive. I still remember throwing one away in 1974 from my first L78 Nova....also threw the Muncie shifter away...but that's another story https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

I still have the Muncie shifter from my Nova, but won't ever use it. Is it good for anything?
