That report seems a little odd as I clearly remember the shop I was at in 1977 on the front page of Newsday reporting we were the the first to hit $1.50 with everyone following and it was climbing then. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif

I see the road sign for Alt. 19 at the intersection in the background. I remember that Alt. 19 was (or perhaps still is?) the main north - south road through the Gulf Coast towns of Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg. My grandparents lived just south of Tarpon Springs back in the 60's, but I don't recall any drag strips in the vicinity.....they may have been farther inland.
