Thanks Sam, I am an Artist (draw and paint) and for some reason I seem to be able to mix colors to achieve the exact finish(shade, color, tint, etc) I am seeking. I like things to not only look correct where you see, I like them to look right when you take it apart to service the vehicle. I dislike taking things apart and finding whole inner doors painted body color or tape lines everywhere, whole underdashes painted black etc OR painted/NASTY Window regulators, makes me wonder what other short cuts were taken? Ideally when I restore a car I would like it to gain the patina the original finishes gained through time, however on a much less aggressive (retarded) basis, if we restored cars as they left the factory, (even using 50 year old technology) and took care of them as WE do, they would last hundreds of years. |

Slowly...still accumulating parts...although I did replace these sweet wheels that were on the car when I dragged it home. ;-) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3211/...3c9f7dbf0b.jpg |

I'd rather be restoring that one...

Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
What's the story on the "stripper Chevelle"?
|
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
It's a COPO 427 car that spent most of its life in Ypsilanti, MI. Was in a shed from 1971-2005 and needs pretty much everything. It has about 9800 miles on the odo but you'd never know it!

Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Thanks, I have owned it for a couple of years but haven't done much of anything to it yet.

Tony is it a Malibu Trimmed car like George's Daytona Yellow Car?
Would be Bad A$$ with silver at the bottom, if it were correct! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...481#Post156481 |
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
No, this one is all orange with a white side stripe. Most of the original paint is still there under the flaking white. Honestly I wish it was a different color but it will go back to the original color combo anyway.

Nope the dates are for Sept and Oct of 68.

How does a person tell the date code on glass?...never had to do it so never learned it...great resto work!

Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Looks just great James. Thanks for the updates.
My thots on repros: the company "attempting" a repro makes the conscious effort to first determine the total number of ways they will deviate from a correct original piece and then they multiply that by a factor of at least 7. That way they ensure that the piece will only look like it could possibly fit so that they get the poor unsuspecting sap to buy the worthless piece of sh*t. There - that feels better now. |
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
The problem is that the person approving the prototype for production never has to use the piece.

No illusion, it's protruding "UP".

Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Just ordered a LOF front glass from Pilkington Classic Division which owns LOF and claims to be using original patterns/molds.
Side note: They also said on the Soft Ray glass theirs is green Soft Ray not blue. Anyone dealt with them before? Glass, Date coded, and shipping $350 Not too bad if it is CORRECT!!! Will update with photos when it arrives... |

real nice James. I used their glass in the front and back of my 69. Looks real nice and correct to me. Looks like you did not go crazy with the paint marks either.

Thanks Sam, It is very nice glass, and the price wasn't too bad, 350 or so for the front. and yes... I tried to stay away from being labeled "Restoration Graffiti." thank you for noticing. I also stayed away from CAST BLAST and paint on cast parts which in turn made me fall in love with and invest heavily in Boeshield and Cosmoline. I more or less replicated the survivors I have seen and photographed. JAG |
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Glad to see someone else not using cast blast paint. They look so much more authentic when they are not painted. Just my opinion. It is coming along nicely. Keep up the nice work.
|
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
James - what an impressive resto. I see what you are trying to do with "no cast blast" and the like. AZ wx allows for un covered metal for the most part and I just love the real patina of metal if at all possible.
Thanks for keeping us updated! |

Not only do they look more authentic, they age like they should. When the rest of the car ages and gains the beautiful patina like it should, a resto with painted cast parts looks like a resto with painted cast parts... IMHO the ultimate compliment would be if someone looks at a car I restored and second guesses as to whether it is a survivor or not. |
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
I love Boeshield! My survivor nova drinks it. I like the look of cars and NOT lawn ornaments.
|
Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Wow. Sure has come a long way! Looks great.

Re: 1969 Z28 Restoration
Looks Great James , My color too. Let me know when you get to lower windshield trim. I need a picture of how that goes on
