Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
That was a REAL thrill to watch!!! Guy was driving it like to stole it.. Just like we drove them back in the day... |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Lee… That is a beautiful automobile with an interesting history and color combination. The Olds 442 W-30 ragtops were such exceptional looking and all around performing autos. I am looking forward to seeing your car in person at one of the major events soon. I have seen many other W-machines restored by Gary and they have all been top flight! Welcome aboard & wishing you the best! RM

I friend of mine saw a W-30, W-27 convertible here in Sweden last year. .... I have a Hemi Challenger and a RAIV in mind. </div></div> Have you forgotten your COPO already? The 442 you're referring to is it the same one I have found. I know a 442 W27 coupe too not far form where I live. Jan |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Hi Janne !
No I haven´t forgotten about my COPO, I was just thinking about rare convertibles shipped back to the U.S. Do you have anything else to tell us about the W-30,W-27 convertible you looked at ? Transmission ? Other options ? |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Good to see you on here Lee!!!!
I wish a set of my Polyglas could have made it onto that car!!!!!!! Best of luck in Reno and I hope that you can have that car show up to MCACN. |

I just looked at it briefly a couple of years ago when writing my book. It is under restoration. The guy has the buildsheet somewhere at home, he said he should try to find it... It has A/C and Auto. The original hood was damaged some time and the insurance company had someone make a new one and it isn't really looking like it should on the underside. I am not 100% sure on the W27 rear, the whole axle is painted silver. It has been "known" for many years that this car has a Alu-rear. Except that, the drivetrain is #matching and car is in good shape. I think he would sell if he got a good offer and it could be another one going back to the US. But the exchange rate is bad for us selling. Jan |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
The car made it to the 2011 Oldsmobile Nationals in Reno last week- Received the Best of Class Award and is now in my garage waiting for some owner sorting. It was fun to share the car with my Oldsmobile peers and I hope to make the Muscle Car Nationals in Illinois in November.

John: My wife is making a smilebox slide show that I will send you directly. There are some picture of the nationals at the classic oldsmobile site. Elliott Jaffe's old blue 1970 w-30 convt 4 speed was right next to me and was a nice car. Lee

I posted a couple low res pictures on classicoldsmobile.com. I hope it is ok to refer to another site. You will have to cut and paste the link below. It included much of the discussion during the restoration too. Lee

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Sue and I had a great time at the MCACN show in Chicago. We felt like part of the Supercar Registry Family. Car was well received and hopefully helped to show the beauty of a nicely restored oldsmobile. We were invited to the Detroit Autorama so the car will stay in Michigan until that show. Hope to see many of you again in a few months and meet some more of the members of this group too.

Nice meeting you Lee, and seeing your car. I had to catch a plane before you received your awards, Congrats. Apparently I got Concours Gold, Platinum Buick and Celebrity Choice.

Don, you have a great car. I had never seen a real buick stage I 4 speed vert. Lee

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
That Buick is a very cool car too. Congrats on your well deserved award.
There was an original family owned '72 Stage 1 4 speed Convert in the VIP car for sale coral. That car is expected, to be included the class of '72 display for MCACN IV. I think a good portion of all the '70 Stage I, 4 speed converts produced are located within a close radious of Rosemont! |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Thanks Lee and Stefano, I saw a 72 in the CC but it was an auto. The survivor '72 Stage vert you recently sold was a neat car. 1 of 1 in that color combo.

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Thanks. I think all Stage 1 cars are special. Especially the rag tops and GSXs.
I missed the Auto Stage I in the VIP for sale coral? However, there was a very original 27,000 orig. mile, 4 speed, blue/white/white one family owned Stage one convertible, documented by the Sloan Museum as one of only 9 non a/c 4 speed rags ever produced in 1972. I also had a Kliner restored, Blue/white/white Canadian docs and build sheet '72 4 speed a few years back. |

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
I really liked the 72 convert forsale, but the cracked original block scared me off. It was priced right. steering wheel was very puzzling. I spent a lot of time looking at that car, very cool and solid.

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
I will be a RS on Friday night with Elliot J. who is selling his very nice silver 1971 w-30 convertible auto with air and cruise control car. Fully documented car. Saturday I will spend the afternoon and evening at BJ. Bob, Charlie, Stefano, Don.....I will look for you. I will miss the blue 1970 w-30 convt 4 speed at BJ on Friday night. If someone could take a bunch of detailed pictures of the car for my files I would appreciate it.

Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
Is the blue car documented other than non-# matching? What is its condition? Because it sold for a mild price.
|
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
The blue car looked very nice to me but I don't know what I'm looking at.
|
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
The blue '70 W-30 conv. belonged to a friend, very nicely restored car. I don't know what it has for docs but it is a real W-30 4spd, was surprised it didn't sell for quite a bit more. B-J estimated selling price was in the mid-$100's.

He had a build sheet and was hoping for 140+ . nice car . Even nom seems to be a ridiculous hit for 1/96 . perhaps had it gone Sat prime time . DL |
Re: 1970 Olds 442 W-30 convertible four-speed
I liked the blue car. It was one of the better buys of the auction. A documented 1 of 96 good color. I think the seller was shocked as were my olds friends. The re-bodied ZL1 went for good money and a rare olds that was admittedly non number matching engine with some heavy body work should have still broke well into the $100ks. But that is the hazard of the no reserve auction.
Note to Charlie.......you should have started the '55, it would have been worth another 200k. Lee |
