I know you love BY Chick - your car is WAYYYY ahead of mine though! DY kinda took over the yellow orders in '69. I'm thankful for that since there are only 2 known '69 Camaro BY COPOs that exist. IMO it looks great with the style trim package and spoilers.
With ownership history, notarized statements, vintage pictures, pictures of COPO attributes before restoration, JM certification, NCRS report, etc. - it should be worthy of a nice restoration. Also interesting - in my research I got statements from some folks who clearly recall the car when it raced in the early 70s. George Nye (York track announcer for many years) clearly remembers it. Marty Feegle (NHRA record holder) recalled the car racing at York. Charley Lord let Rick Sweater (owner and driver) borrow his slicks when Rick ran his best time (10.97) at York. Maybe others on this site recall seeing the car race at York (many times) or Cecil (infrequently)? |
Man, I love the racing stories about lending/borrowing slicks. I can't wait to watch this one being restored.
Wish i could remember this car !!! I spent almost every Saturday at York as a little kid 1968-1973 w/my Dad, what i wouldn't give now, to have payed more attention to the cars running than playing with my Hot Wheels in the dirt !!!

Finally - butternut yellow again!!!!
I flat out love Butternut Yellow. I'd really like to find a 69 Z in this color.
Neat color. If I could jump in a time machine and go back to order a Copo I'd being giving heavy consideration to Butternut Yellow or Frost Green.
Wow, love the color on a 69 makes it look unique. Looks awesome!

Just to close the loop on this restoration. A picture of the butternut yellow COPO at MCACN
One of my favorites from the show Bergy, job well done!
That was a beautiful car.
Hey Bruce, I didn't realize that you brought that car to MCACN!
Did you sell it? I know one guy was trying to buy it.
Beautiful car Bruce. I stopped to look at it numerous times and love the styled trim along with the VE3 front. Absolutely a run away hit at the show.
Congrats... |
Very handsome COPO. So nice to see the unique colors on display at MCACN. The Blue one next to yours was kool to see as well. Thanks for dropping off the book.

Bruce,
This thread deserves being posted as a Supercar feature thread with a complete pictorial of the build. Perhaps you could share more pictures and details of the car being restored and Bruce could move this thread over and add the restoration pictures to it. I am sure we'd all appreciate seeing more details of this special car. It really deserves a full spread IMO. Cheers |
....
.... Great restoration :worship: ... |

not sure if it says 375 hp or 425 hp
it may be another butternut 427 COPO? |
Looks like 435 hp.
Great pic! What track is that?
That looks Daytona Yellow to me. The whites are pretty washed out in that pic.

That says 425 HP and I’m pretty sure that’s Sonny’s Tindal’s COPO which was for sale here just a couple of years ago.
Yes that is Sonny Tindals DY Copo. It was for sale last year and I called and talked to Sonny about the car prior to it being sold here. I believe it went to a member who's in California and is being restored.

Interesting that some folks stopped by at the show indicating that they knew of 2 additional butternut COPOs out there. One was said to be a Canadian car. I'm waiting for verification with VINs and paperwork. I'm sticking with 2 butternut COPOs until I get verification, but could be 3 or 4.
Regarding the Supercar Feature - I don't know how to do that :-) Also, in our haste to get this car finished for MCACN, we didn't take a lot of photos along the way. I finished the drive train and sub-frame while the body & paint were in another shop. Then assembly was a mad rush! The Sportscar Center in Ephrata, PA did a great job IMO. |
Beautiful car.
I owned a butternut yellow automatic on the column copo and sold it in 1990. It was an eastern Kentucky car.
I believe there is an OO Butternut Yellow Copo sitting in a garage in Ohio
Perhaps Bruce (Xplantdad) can make that feature post happen. That and maybe add some additional pics which I'm sure we'd all love to see Bergy. Great job of pushing through to get it done in time for MCACN. The first thing I did when I realized it was your car was look back to see the date (May 24th) where you added the pics of the painted shell. That right there told me how hard you and the Sportscar Center must have worked to finish it all in time for Chicago.
Well done Bruce. Well done! |
Hey Bruce Just send a bunch of pictures and a write up to me and I can put something together...:headbang:
Still not sure how I missed this car at the show ?? being a local car with Lancaster county & York history and The Sports Car Center is only a few miles up the road from me. Hope to get a chance see it sometime.
very sweet car!

The second owner and his son (Rick and Ryan Sweater) stopped by today to look at his old butternut yellow copo. He bought it in 1972 at a local Ford dealership where the OO traded it in. Rick shared lots of great memories and interesting stories about racing the car on the streets and track. Today was the first time that he saw it painted yellow since he sold it in 1975. The guy that Rick sold it to repainted it RG - it remained RG until I bought it.

That car looks great.
