I don't know about show room stock. The small block car's were a real dog out of the show room with out a good tune. I just can't see a L78,L88 or L72 with exhaust manifolds, they need a good set of headers and a few other bolt ons to make them move. But what would I know about drag racing any way https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Where were you in 69?
smokin dope, and drinkin wine, The boys homesick.
Home sick for days gone by, home sick to kiss the sky.
Where's ole Belair?

[/ QUOTE ]

Sammy, that from an old Atlanta rhythm section tune. It never was a hit, but I always liked it.
Rick, I liked ole Charley until he moved way right.(Not that he didn't start there). He did a great deal to bring southern fried rock to the front of rock, and country crossover.A great performer, and musician. He just kinda lost me on his message.

Now Sammy, next time you hear a good ole tune, or crank up the Z, you tell me if that doesn't make you a little homesick for 1969 too. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: Gibb Nova vintage day 2 pic's

"Homesick" is on Atlanta Rhythm Sections's album "Quinella" which came out in '81 or so. It got pretty regular airplay in Minneapolis on the AOR/classic rock stations throughout the '80s. Its one of their harder rocking tunes. Kind of an anomoly, like Bread's "Mother Freedom" (one of my favorite harder rock guitar songs, by a predominantly soft-rockin' band).

Amen to the Charlie Daniels' comment. How did a guy who wrote "Long Haired Country Boy" and the southern hippie anthem "Uneasy Rider" evolve into a fairly obstinate right wing reactionary?

The cool thing about some race cars is that they have an evolutionary history, and you can pick the era you like best, or perhaps mix and match some elements from different eras.

Maybe this Nova didn't turn into a clown car until "Day 13", maybe it was tastefully campaigned for a time ala copo-2's pic. I could see doing it up with period bolt-ons and Cragars.

Have you seen the Certified Stock cars run lately, they seem to do just fine with their manifolds, ie; low 12's and high 11's without traction bars and skinny tires!!!

Re: Gibb Nova vintage day 2 pic's

Tom, you're right about it's day1 history. Orig owner, Jim L. raced it at KC drag strip & street raced it in Grecian Green, then sold it with only 1500 miles. I believe it was the 2nd owner, who I've not spoken to, that day2'd it the way it is shown here.
I'm told that when Jim was on leave from Nam he decided to drive from KC to Laharpe to buy the Nova. When he got there, the dealership was closed, so he called Fred at home to see if he would reopen to sell him the Nova. Fred did so, Jim bought it & drove it home. Only a few of the 50 Novas' were actually sold at the Gibb dealership. BTW Wayne Elston, now deceased, filled out the Gibb delivery inspection sheet...he did many of the ZL1 inspections as well.
This Nova either came close to setting the Eddyville track record, or did set it(can't get my hands on actual doc's) & I'm told that other Muscle used to come to Moulton from Cedar Rapids to see if they could beat it. Not bad for the $1000 that the 3rd owner paid for it...with this paint sceme & the L88. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Jude where did hear that only afew were sold at the Gibb dealership?? I would say that's true about the ZL-1 s, but not the Novas. All were sold by and threw Fred Gibb.

Re: Gibb Nova vintage day 2 pic's

I realize that all 50 Nova's 1st went to LaHarpe, and the registry shows that 30 of the 50 were sold there ( I consider that a few). That leaves 20 sold though Fred's dealer network....Courtesy, Bill Allen,Riley, Branine, Rod Smith,Bomier,Knowles,Harvey May. You've always known more about these Nova's than me, so am I wrong? The 2 that I owned, sold at Gibb, had the delivery inspection. The other 2 sold from Courtesy did not.
I spoke with Jim L today and asked how he had it set up. Minor mod's like headers, T bars & he rolled the fenders for slicks. Unfortunately, he can't find any pics https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Jude 10 to 15 went to Harrell to be conv. or tuned. Those are the cars that went to other dealers. Very few stock ones were sold by other dealers. I agree 30 to 35 were sold by Fred at his dealership. I don't consider 60 to 70% a few . https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Kim,

Not sure on this, but wasn't all these cars for warranty reason, directed back through Gibb, though another authorized Chevy dealer may have sold as new, even the Harrell prepared cars?

Re: Gibb Nova vintage day 2 pic's

Ray, is that a picture of your car, or, if not, whose.
The argument on stock/factory depends a little on if you lived in the time of these cars, or not. Some also depends on what one feels will bring the most value at sale time. I think most of us, as mr. Cumby calls us "geezers" who lived in the day know that 1, you bought one of these cars to street race, go to the strip, generally just beat hell out of it. 2, if you didn't modify it with big tires/wide rims, headers, slapper bars, you weren't gonna win many races, cause, THERE WE'REN'T NO FRIGGEN RULES! 3, if you showed up with white wall E70 tires, not only were you gonna get beat, you were gonna get laughed at.
I sincerly respect purists. I understand the logic, but, being a "geezer" it's just a hard sell for me.
I guess in closing, I can say this. I'll be cold, dead, and pitchin coal in the furnace, before someone else puts the exhaust manifold/smog, and white wall tires on ole yeller. Let the record show, it made it from Cedar Rapids Ia. to Wyoming Ia. before the tires were changed. Yep, that quick. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Ray, I think your right about the warranty work. I have never heard of a car fixed except at Gibbs shop. Also the warranty was only 90 days. That may have made a differance.

Ken,

Yes, that is a picture of my car taken probably in 1971? This is the same se-up, but in color. You have probably seen this picture before?

As far as the issue of stock appearing or race, personally I have feeling both ways. The way it is now, is the way I drove it home from K.C., but as you mention, it wasn't long before it had a pair of slicks and competing on the strip.

I like Ray's car with the Cragars. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif We have them on our Chevelle. Every time I think about putting the original style SS wheels back on the car, I change my mind. Day two and Cragars go hand in hand.....along with headers and a Hurst shifter. I really haven't changed much in the last 40 years. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif
What's this hippy thing. None of the car guys I knew were into the hippy fad. There was one local long haired guy that bought a Shelby Mustand in about 1969-1970. He litterally destroyed the car in one summer. They were a totally different breed and we didn't seem to cross paths at all. Grass, for us, was something you walked on. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Sammy, most of those damn hippies were goin to Canada to get outta the draft. Cold was better than Vietnam. I remember how Ford most likly lost the election by pardoning the draft restisters/dodgers (depending on how you saw it), and then almost none of them came back.
Keith, your kinda right, although the term hippie was/is used a lot like the word liberal, homo, fag, the N word. Most of the time around here, even if you were part of the Sunday choir, only cut grass, and never smoked it,but your hair was a little longer that conformed to community standards, you were a fu kin hippie.
Please revisit 2 lane black top. James Taylor would have qualifyed as a gearhead hippie. Although "the girl' would have been a good time hippie chick. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
