CamarosRus 01-11-2019 12:56 AM

Chuck Sharin bought the #27 ZL1 Drag Racer from Dick Tutino around 1975
Chuck Sharin contracted with Thayne Porlier to install a Roll Cage, Rear Wheel Tubs and Narrowed Differential with the understanding the STOCK OE Floor, Trunk be kept ala NHRA Modified Elim Rules. Porlier removed the STOCK Pass Floor & Trunk when he installed the new frame from Subframe to rear valance.
Chuck Sharin sued & won the law suit with Porlier....then parted out everything............
yada, yada, yada

I've written B/J and informed them that their web site description does not represent the FACT that the ONLY ORIGINAL #27 item on the entire car is the VIN Tag.........

I'm evidently TOO STUPID to resize a 2018 photo of my old Drag Car that was built from
a Junk Yard Body and ALL the misc #27 Body Panels I saved after parting out the #27 ZL-1. This race car is still in WA state...but the #27 VIN tag is in Scottsdale,AZ at B/J 2019

It will be very interesting to see what happens next week Chuck. Unfortunately some see these cars as a business and nothing more and look for these opportunities to try to make a quick buck. It is a sad part of our hobby but non the less these crimes are happening all the time especially on the rare and desirable cars. Thank god that you were able to set the story straight and prevent some other stary eyed dreamer (buyer beware) from getting fleeced. I guess that value is in the eye of the beholder and next week we will see if the the legend over shadows the truth. Either way I am glad you chimed in and gave us a glimpse of the real story of a controversial and historic car, be it was is left or what it was. I am sure that many of us will be looking on with great anticipation, and while this car may not be the most valuable 1969 ZL1 it is certainly one of the most talked about

CHUCK, If the original still has the original hidden Vin#'s. I would find that car and restore it and sue to get the original dash vin# back.

That is dirty pool. Chuck owned both cars and he is the one who transferred the VIN from one car to the other and sold the car with the VIN attached to the next guy. Finding the shell and trying to take ownership of the both cars is as slippery as selling the reVINed car as legit. Getting the two cars back together and making things right it one thing but owning one and trying to rob the other is another story.

Here's a link to the auction next Saturday night of the car in question for those interested. Looks like they gave it a prime time spot.

#27 has been a known re-body for over a decade. Neither Mecum, nor BJ have tried to hide that. If you couldn't figure out from the Mecum description what "found another body in a junkyard and pieced the racecar back together again" means then you deserve to get fleeced. This story is not news.

Astock 01-11-2019 04:34 PM

Super Chevy Pomona, around 1997, I'm pretty sure it's the same car Reg J had Chip selling for $75k. I remember it being green, column shift. He also had a grn Copo 4sp for $25k.

resto4u 01-12-2019 02:01 AM

I was simply stating what could easily happen. That is why i would not touch that car with a 10ft pole. You have no protection from that happening. The original body should have been taken to the crusher. Any law enforcement will look at the hidden vins, who do you think is going to get the Vin tag.

Chuck....Does the guy in Wa. know his race car is a ZL1 ?

Mr70 01-12-2019 01:45 PM

..and won't it still have the CON Vin on the firewall?

CamarosRus 01-12-2019 10:06 PM

1) The (current all RED) 69' Camaro race car in WA state, is long time owned
by JIM BRUNNS (sp?). I do not know and cant prove that he sold the VIN tag
out of my old C/SM 69 Drag car. Jim B changed the paint from my multi color\
C/SM race car to his current all Red. Jim B knows his car is made from many ZL1 pieces
The WA state drag car is the one I built from
the junk yard shell and ALL the other ZL1 bolt on pcs including front clip, doors
deck, sub frame and interior.

2) The #27 ZL1 shell butchered by Thayne Porlier (Tacoma,WA) was given by me
to John C (cant even remember correct spelling). I can possibly imagine that shell
was ever built into anything. It would be beyond my belief to think the original shell is
still laying around somewhere..........

3) IF somebody reading wants to post the 69 Camaro RED drag car as it exists today
(with VIN TAG missing/empty hole) send me an email so I can send you the pictures you can resize to fit this sites mediocre software.

resto4u 01-13-2019 04:12 PM

Chuck, just to clarify. We are talking about three different cars. You had the original #27 ZL1 that got hacked up, and the VIN# was then transfered to the junkyard shell for your drag car that is or was owned by brunns. Then some how the #27 VIN# was removed from the brunns camaro and is now on the BJ #27 ZL1. So the #27 VIN# has been on three different camaro bodies. And you are not sure if the original shell still exists. Does this sound correct? This is very important information if someone wants to see if the original body still exists. Thank you chuck!

CamarosRus 01-14-2019 12:04 AM

resto4u, Your above post is correct....The #27 ZL1 tag has been attached to THREE 69 Camaro Body shells.

I respectfully ask why you cant/wont/dont at least use your first name in your postings.
Have I ever met you ??? If we do ever meet shall I call you Resto4U or Sir ???

Regards, Chuck Sharin Auburn, WA

3) Chuck driving #27 ZL-1 as bought from Dick Tutino around 1975

Note that the trim tag on the engine photo from the 80's is a LOS 57-57 tag 712 interior and also appears to be a Muncie 4 speed car.

resto4u 01-15-2019 01:27 AM

Chuck, i have never seen a 305 ci used for drag racing.

CamarosRus 01-20-2019 12:13 AM

Well.....The #27 VIN tag just sold for $210,000................

and the beat goes on !!!!!!!!!!!!

NWYENKO 01-20-2019 04:38 PM

Rumor around Bremerton Raceay in the early ninety’s was that the trim tag sold for $25K

DW31S 01-20-2019 05:14 PM

* "Oh what a web we weave".....
* Thank you Chuck for all the honest info....."honesty IS and ALWAYS has been the
best policy. The B-J wording does say rebody with/and "Non OEM" trim tag.
* 305 CI back then was a combo built for C/SM for Weight vs. CID. Likely a big bore,
short stroke high-revving "screamer"; NOT the same 305 used in current Stock
Eliminator.

CamarosRus 01-21-2019 06:05 AM

DW31S, You are correct as my "305" was 3" Stroke x 4.030 Bore built by the
very well known Bobby Warren from North Carolina. The engine had Lee Shepard Heads
and all the usual good parts.........I now believe Bobby knowing that I was a "nobody" class racer from Seattle with minimal experience.....he built the engine safe to last and
not as fast as it could have been.....

NWYenko aka Jim, Did you know I sold the turn key C/SM 69' Multi Colored racer (with #27 VIN Tag) to Allen Martin Chevrolet in Bremerton, WA for $8500.....I'm thinking Dave Barcelon had it next and then maybe Jim Brunns ?????????

7TL34 01-21-2019 01:18 PM

Chuck, question I've always meant to ask is what happened to the #27 born with engine & drive train? - Dale

RichSchmidt 04-28-2023 06:24 PM

Could this be the remains of the body shell. All I can tell is there is red paint inside the A-pillar and the rear of the car is black. There is no way to identify if for sure

BCreekDave 04-28-2023 08:29 PM

and just like that its gone....

CamarosRus 05-01-2023 02:51 AM

Rich S, I can not possibly believe that the original #27 Body Shell (with NO Floor/Trunk Panels) would still exist all these years later............

I sold the #27 engine to the owner of Ben's Truck Parts (Seattle Company)
I heard that the FOSTER BROS (Machine Shop Operators) had it later ????

Sold the Chrysler/Liberty 4 speed and DANA 60 Diff to ??????????

The car in the ad is even more cut up than you describe. It is really just the roof, quarters, tail panel and rockers mounted on a tube chassis. The entire firewall and floor are gone and replaced with tin. The only clue might be the date codes on the few remaining pieces of metal.
