Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Schonye,
I think I remember back in Linda's original thread that Earl may have modified the mounting plates by removing the shock mounting points. I'll see if I can find the thread. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Here is Linda's posting from 6 Feb 2006 wrt the modification to the traction bar mounting plate area:
Earl says he bought the traction bars at Auto Parts store on Gompers Avenue. I think this was Sam's Papa's store. Earl's uncle Jack Rising used to work for this store. Earl says there were brackets on the bars for the shocks to bolt to but he cut them off so he didn't have to take the sway bar off . Then he built a set for the neighbor's Nova. He says he put the traction bars on because he was tired of hearing the springs rap when he power shifted. One night we took the car to the Cadet down at Kittanning. After we had everyone's attention by driving through a few times, I got behind the wheel and took it through the parking lot. At the end of the lot where it was dark we did a quick driver swap and Earl burned it out of the lot and slapped it through the gears out on 422. Then we switched back and I drove it back through the parking lot so everyone thought I was the one horsing it. We had a lot of fun that night. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Nice pics Sam! The 'CTB' in yellow on the side(s) of the block is consistent with other original engines, as is the white 'X's on the ends of the heads. The extra yellow writing is also consistent with others, although each engine seems to have different writing - my engine has a yellow 'JH' for example, written in paint with a long horizontal run down the side of the oil pan. The casting date of the engine is fairly early compared to others, as many were cast on the 18th then assembled on the 20th.
Cool slapper bars! |

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Cool. I just talked to your Pappy about this a few minutes ago! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif
Hey Marlin. All indications from the Roofs are that these 4 wheels (and the XT spare) are original to the car. Do other Deuces have this much spread between wheel assembly and car production (i.e 4 1/2 mos)? |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
geez where have i been, i didnt even see this until now ! sam, thats going to be a cool ride when completed. so this car was from Indiana Pa. huh ? my parents grew up about 30 or so minutes from there in Clymer. thats cool !!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
The wheels are definitely original to the car. Earl says we didn't even own a set of torches back then, he cut the brackets off the slapper bars with a hack saw.
Schonye, Everything looks GREAT in the pictures!!! Can't say how much it means to us that Sam is keeping this car day 2. I had always thought that if it was restored to original it would be like every other deuce out there and loose some of it's personality. This way it will still feel like it was once "our" car. I really can't wait to see it all back together!! |

You and me both Linda https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif !! Curious how long you ran those stock SS wheels on the Deuce before you put the Ansen Aluminum slots on. Thanks! |

As far as I know AO SS wheels were dated with numerals, not letters... making them April 20 and April 17, If that's the case they aren't "4 1/2 months early" and are actually pretty consistent with the wheel dates of most every other Deuce. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif Erik and I inspected this car when it was still home in Indiana, PA a few years ago but I forget what type of lugnuts were on it... are they chrome plated, or stainless capped? Pretty sure they were just plated, not the capped factory type you'd find on SS Chevelles. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
1970 calendar indicates "A 17" was a Saturday. Don't know if the factories would have been operating on a Saturday https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif . "4 17" and "4 20" would be wheels assembled on Friday and Monday https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif !

Just in passing, Sam requested no overspray on the underside, and he is going to finish out the paint daubs, and tags.
I believe Joe shot it with Dupont. |

Clymer is even closer than that - more like a stones throw! My Mom grew up in Indiana. I lived and worked there for awhile after high school. i couldnt remember how far it was. when i lived in Punxsy a few years ago,i took my truck for some work to Indiana, thats probably where i got the 30 min.from.

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Hey Jeff, Nice to hear from another local! I was originally from Penn Run and most of my family still lives there. Most of the time when we took the Deuce over to visit we would go through Clymer and then in to Penn Run. It was a slight short cut for us and a change of scenery instead of always going through Indiana. So back in the day the Deuce was no stranger to Clymer.
Sam, will have to check with Earl on when the Ansen's went on. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Joe is correct, that date is would be a 4 17 as letters were not used. The wheel dates are spot on with the other original deuce wheels, as they were purchased directly from MotorWheel by Yenko - not from GM. He apparently placed a pretty big order all at once given the consistency of dates amongst the cars. Although Yenko obviously had plenty of stock, if he could get away with not switching out the wheels on a given Deuce - he would. But one original owner insisted that they change the wheels, so they did - but simply tossed a handful of 'Y' centercap decals on the front seat!
Sam, why no overspray??? |

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Personal preference Marlin. In my (feeble) mind, I got the motivated, enthusiastic, GM painter back in the day who just couldn't stand overspray on the underside of the car and painted my Deuce the way he would have painted his. If it makes you feel any better, there is spray thru on the SS and XT wheels! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
BTW, the original XT spare is dated "4 17" (another Friday assembled wheel https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif ) |

This be our Living Room South. No cutting, welding, etc. Pretty much reassembly after paint so we don't contaminate the fresh paint. It used to be an Allis Chalmers dealership. The steering wheel was givin to me by a Long Grove fireman who had a small antique shop in town until he sold the building. He didn't know what the hell it came off of either. The next time the lovely Mrs. Cumby comes this way, you 'll have to stop out. Maybe we can find you a new yard sign. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Joe comes thru: My hood tach was sent out for rework at Auto Instruments recently and it was determined that the innards were no longer working and were unrepairable due to specific parts availability, so they put new tach workings inside. I asked them to address the yellowed face. They said that they could not access the inside face because of the Dixco assembly process where the lense was glued to the Yenko Crest bezel. Well Joe worked his magic when the hood tach came back to Donahue and the results are below. Mighty impressive Joe https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif !! Looks great! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
Thanks!! Before... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../188304-13.jpg After https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif .... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...s/100_0952.jpg |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Looks good...I think Auto Instruments is telling you stories. The lense shouldn't have been glued to the bezel. The faceplace just pops on, and the lense is removable with small screwdriver. I'd be interested in those original Dixco innards they took out and claimed were unrepairable if they didn't keep them.
|
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Yeah, that sounds like a story unless someone glued the bezel to the lens at some point. The bezel snaps on and off, and sometimes in half https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif.

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Joe is right the lense is screwed on - always removable.
Sam, I hope there is no spray through on the Magnum wheels, only on the XT wheel. |

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Mark, Luigi's is still in business and going strong, even selling their own sauce at Tate's supermarket in Clymer.
Joe, No pics with the stripes on. Earl shot a whole roll of film the day before we took them off. When we notified the developing lab that the pics had never arrived, they claimed they had gotten "lost". We've always been very disappointed about that. Schonye, did you get a package yet? Went out on Tuesday. Sam, so what will this car be known as now? Sam's Deuce(isn't there another Sam with a Deuce)? Griffith's Deuce? Sam Griffith's Deuce? I'm still trying to figure out what our new user name should be. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Earl says we ran the original wheels for about 3-4 years before putting on the Ansens. Earl and I were talking about the tach the other day. He said that for some reason every time he turned on the headlights on the car the tach would drop about 200-400 rpms so he disconnected the light in the tach. That Schoenthaler family sure is a good team!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif |
