1967 396/375 Camaro Research
... The vin# of my car is
124377N198768 After being informed that it was built just 2 days after Grumpy Jenkins 1967 396/375 Camaro, ... I was wondering where on the production line my car was ... compared to the first 1967 Yenko Camaros and looked on the Supercar Registry list ... ... It was very early compared to the vins of those 1967 Camaros that were converted to Yenko Camaros. ... interesting :eek2: ... |

Looks great with the super tricks and no spoilers.
|
... Does anyone have a 1967 Camaro that came with the 396/375 motor option
... also have the J65 Brake option ? ...:scholar: ... |
There were several optioned that way - I know of10+.

... So is this correct ? The FIRST 1967 Camaro built with the 396/375 motor was The Actual Pace Car. The SECOND was THE BACK UP Pace Car. The THIRD was GRUMPY JENKINS CAR. ... and his was also the first car with the 396/375 motor OFFERED To the General Public and PICKED UP at the Tech Center and not at a Dealership. The FOURTH was MY CAR that was ORDERED and DELIVERED to Hechler Chevrolet. ... and it is UNKNOWN if GRUMPY JENKINS CAR was ORDERED thru a Dealership or not. ... Is this correct ? Just trying to understand the sequence correctly. Thanks for your input. ... |
There were three 396/375 pace cars built before Grumpy Jenkins' car and "The Actual Pace Car" was the third of those three. There may have been one or more 396/375 Camaros built between your car and Grumpy's but, so far, I'm not aware of one that has surfaced.

... So then, The FOURTH was GRUMPY JENKINS CAR. ... and his was also the first car with the 396/375 motor OFFERED To the General Public and PICKED UP at the Tech Center and not at a Dealership. The FIFTH was MY CAR that was ORDERED and DELIVERED to Hechler Chevrolet. ... and it is UNKNOWN if GRUMPY JENKINS CAR was ORDERED thru a Dealership or not. ... Is this correct ? Just trying to understand the sequence correctly. .... Just going by what Kurt at CRG has told me. ... Thanks for your input. ... |
I think it has been said a number of times in this thread that your car is currently the earliest "KNOWN" car next to Grumpy's. Another car with an earlier VIN could show up tomorrow, but no one knows.
You've got a great car, so I'd stop worrying about whether it is the first, second or third "sold to the public". I don't think anyone really puts that much emphasis on it. My old red 4P L78 is the next known car to yours. Unless it was the first built or Grumpy's car, it wouldn't matter to me if it was the next, second or third. I'd just be happy that I had a cool 4P L78 with the original motor :) In your case, I'd be thrilled to have original paint :) |
... Thanks and I do agree.
I am keeping this car "as found" and am not going to put license plates on it to drive. There is alot of Homemade things under the car that made it go faster and stop quicker. I am keeping those on the car and just cleaning up the underside. I was told that this "could be" The first "known" car that was ORDERED and DELIVERED to a Dealership. ... That, to me, would be of interest. ... and may not interest others. Just trying to figure out all that I can about this car. ... I thought that this would be the place to ask these questions. ... I am sure that others may show up too ! ... I always appreciate your input as you have followed these cars alot closer then I have. ... Thanks again. ... |
I would do the same if I were you. I would build a period correct motor for it and get it running and driving. Then I'd get it out there for others to appreciate! You wouldn't be lying to say that it is the first known '67 L78 sold to the public on a nice sign board.
I appreciate that you are working hard to uncover its history. That was always the most fun part of the old car hobby to me. |
... In 1969, WATTS Motor Co., Williamsburg, Va. Sponsored the car and was advertised on the side of the Camaro at that time.
... I will be building the 1969 396/375 Motor that they gave him to race with at that time. The reason I have to ask so many questions is because the current list of "Found" 1967 396/375 Camaros is not readily available to the general public or even those that help contribute to the Registry of these cars like what is done with the Supercar Registry. ... Maybe one day it will be. I am sure that other cars will be found and added to the list if that happens. ... For now, I will just keep asking questions for those that will choose to contribute to the information and knowledge that they have learned ... much like you have ... and that is greatly appreciated. CRG has been a great source of knowledge on all years of Camaros and I am thankful for that. Thanks for your help and encouragement ! .. |
i think there is 230-250 67 l78 accounted for in some registries.
|
... That is nice to know.
I am sure alot more will be found. ... Good luck to everyone that is searching for one. .. |

... That fine. ... Would my car be the First ordered and sold thru a Dealership ... or would Grumpy's car be that too ? ... Just would like to know, I'm not trying to cause any big debate it's just hard to tell when the updated list is not available to the general public. ... It's not a big deal either way. The Original Paint is what I like about my car. ... Thanks in advance for your input and knowledge. ... |

I don't know how the Grumpy order was placed, but I think it had to be through a dealer. Not sure why it went to Detroit.

... Thanks Kurt.
... I feel blessed to even own a Camaro that was built so early, drag raced it's entire life and has still survived in this condition with the Original Paint. ... Thanks for your continued help in preserving the history of the Camaro. ... I will continue to put this old drag car back together. ... Thanks |

... Here is a photo of the car hauler that he used to haul the Camaro to the dragstrip. https://www.yenko.net/forum/picture....pictureid=1182 ... :3gears: ... |
