In 1971, there was the Chevelle and upscale Chevelle Malibu, right? And the Heavy Chevy was based on the former and the SS on the latter. Doesn't have anything to do with the 300 Deluxe, I don't think?

The 300 ended in 70. In 71 you could get the Chevelle or Malibu. The Heavy Chevy was only available in the Chevelle and the SS was only available in the Malibu. Didn't mean for it to come across as the 300 turned into the HC. Just meant that the base model Chevelle was the platform the HC was offered in. A less expensive version of the SS.
Didn't mean to hijack the original posters tread with all this.

A Chevelle was the model you ordered. A trim level was added to a base car. You either ordered a base Chevelle or added HC, Malibu, or SS as trim levels. It is true HC was only built off a base Chevelle as it was a lower trim level than Malibu

Technically the base car was its own model, since it had its own series designation of 133 or 134 versus 135 or 136 for a Malibu. GM even noted it as a new "model" when they reintroduced the base model in March of 1970.

Rainer, it was so nice to meet at Joe S’s, We talked about 1970 Chevelles for a while and now I see you have a Black 1969 L78/M22/KK??? how did we not talk about your 1969?

Can you share the details? Is there a thread about that car?

Hey Ryan -
Great to finally meet you as well. I have not really posted anything online about the 69 L78. I'll have to create a thread here at some point. I'll PM you a couple pics.

Just one more bit of info to add on the base model 1970 Chevelle. Since it was not available in the US at the start of the model year, there was no information on it originally included in the 1970 Chevrolet Sales Album. When the Camaro and Corvette updates for the album were sent out to dealers some time after the first of the year in 1970, there was also a page included with information on the "New Chevelle series."

Ditto to what Ryan said--nice meeting you too.

I agree, Rainer we spoke about your Chevelle (and how you found it) that Saturday night at MCACN at Joe's place - love to see more of it! Perhaps start a thread...
