Based on evidence we found in the garage and discussions with several people that knew the car during its lifetime, no I do not believe it ever had Torque Thrusts on it.
|
I just checked a 325hp M20 Baltimore 69 SS build sheet and it shows BY as will in box 19. Looks like this shaft covered the gammit for Baltimore 69 BB 4speed Chevelles.
|
Great score on those tires Rick.."....and Annie....:youguysrock:

Hope Rick doesn't mind me jacking his build thread but you all might like this. Today Grady and I looked at his drive shaft on his 06D BAL COPO Chevelle and after he did a little cleaning Grady found this. Looks like BY in box 19 is in fact Blue/Yellow...AWESOME The first stripe is 22" from the center line of the U joint. Keep up the great work Rick and Annie. Mike |
Thanks to yours and Grady's help earlier today as well as Phil's help I will be correcting the stripes on my driveshaft. Thanks guys!
|
Rick
I need to check with Grady what color was forward. I can't remember |
Green on his was in front which was opposite on mine. Mine are identical but reversed.
|
Confused??? I'm seeing orange/blue/yellow. Green?? added orange stripe??
|
Nope, no one added that stripe....it is exactly the way she left the plant.
Dan |
See the green mark on the right side of the photo. Ours had something similar but was unsure it was supposed to be there till I saw Grady's photo.
|
We could not make much of that green mark. After thinking about laying under the car taking that photo, the green mark and orange stripe are forward.
Mike |
Good stuff Mike and Grady. Thanks for posting. This should solve the drive shaft striping for 69 BB MT (Muncie). Grady, those stripes are crisp and clear!!!
|
Yes, thanx to all. My comment was how a BY code on the buildsheet ended up with orange/blue/yellow with a green daub ahead of it?
|
One of our local guys who worked at the Chevy plant in Cleveland where they did make drive shafts suggested the third stripe may have indicated what shift made the part. I wouldn't say that is cast in stone yet, but since other GM parts had similar indications, it may be right.
|
Based on my experience with 70 Chevelles I have always interpreted the orange stripe to confirming that it was balanced. I see this color all the time on 70 shafts and the third (or sometimes 4th) stripe is most often orange. I say 4th because it was common for Kansas City shafts to repeat one of the two colors such as pink blue pink. The orange stripe is often much further away from the other stripes as well.
|
Phenomenal resto Rick. Thanks for all the posts. You're frame/suspension detail work is second to none IMO. A couple of those pics of the caliper/control arm areas are pure artwork.
|
----As long as we are talking about striped driveshafts, please educate me. I see so many driveshaft stripes done so neatly on restored shafts. Usually taped off and near perfect. This isn't what I remember at all. Am I right thinking the stripes are basically slopped on with, most likely, a brush?...….Bill S
|
Correct Bill.....we make the way nicer than they ever were.
Some say, it’s a sickness :) Dan |
They were applied by hand while the shaft was still in the lathe, or balancing machine. Have talked with a couple guys that built shafts at Parma Chevrolet
Mike |
I have never seen any 1970 shafts that were nice and neat and always looked haphazardly applied. However, the 69's that I have seen, especially mine were nearly perfect in application with very sharp edges like they were taped. However, I know they were never taped so likely change a change in the method they used to place them.
|
Rick,
Just face they facts....the 1969 is a far better built and much better looking Chevelle....now that you’re finally first hand experiencing all of this, very exciting :) Dan |
Well if I need to remind you, one of my first cars was a 69 Chevelle SS396 (with a 427) so I am not going to argue to much with you. ;)

Jamie, Joe and their crew at Super Car Restorations have been busting their asses to get this car in paint for the photoshoot deadline in a couple weeks and they pulled it off again. The bodywork and paint have turned out to be absolutely stunning and in record time. For that Annie and I are very gracious.
Jamie is using PPG Envirobase water base paint on this car. He has done several cars for us in water base already and the results are nothing short of spectacular. His precision mixing techniques are second to none and with perfect paint matching every time. I would like to go into more technical detail but it goes way beyond my pay grade and will add that later when I get the information from Jamie. Right now he has a schedule to keep. After a third and final door and front sheet metal fitment to insure it was perfect, it was ready for the booth and paint application. It underwent a bake cycle last night and will undergo more again today. |

Final paint and clear application than MANY hours spent wet sanding and buffing before the stripe application. We cannot give these guys enough credit for the amount of time and effort they have put into this car for us. Way beyond our expectation.

The body will be mounted on the rolling chassis with our new wheels and tires in the coming weeks for the shoot. From there we will be doing the final assembly. Still LOTS of nights and weekends ahead of Annie and I to get this done. Restoring LS6's you would think I would be used to the efforts to find rare parts but this care has been worse as some of the items have been very elusive but I refuse to cut corners.
Thanks also to the many people that have helped us locate and/or provide many of these parts. Many of you have given up parts for this project that were destined to go on your rare cars so for this we are once again very grateful. Other parts have even been sold or given to us that were destined for two other 69 Yenko restorations after both the owners decided to not restore their cars but drive and enjoy them the way they are. After considerable prodding, one gentleman in Louisville even gave up two of his NOS Yenko crest emblems, two original V.V. Cooke license plate surrounds and a 69 USA plate as well as several other V.V. Cooke items and more coming. Since Baltimore cars used PPG glass and no one reproduces it, that will all have to be custom made. A shout out to Auto City Classic in Isanti, MN for supplying us with the glass for the car. I am having one of our customers make us the negatives for the logos and these will be acid etched onto the glass exactly as we found them. I have also hired a company to reproduce the 1970 Kentucky inspection decal which will be going back on the car and a couple of other people to custom make many of the decals on the car. I will also have to have the brake line stamps custom made as I only have some for the 70 cars so lots to do yet. |
Best red on the planet .
Mike |
I agree....it`s the ONLY RED.
Very exciting! Love it! Dan |
