Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Looking to get ideas on what to build this next spring to hold all my cars, If you have any good pics inside or out of some nice shops or even your muscle car garage that would be great!

Here is a peak at my Garage,
-Grey diamond pattern rubber floor covers from the price club.
-Gemini four post hoist with bridge jack built in Texas USA.
-Insulated garage doors.
-Foam injected walls and ceilings with drywall.
-11' high ceiling for great clearance for the hoist.
-Large de-humidifier to keep the garage dry in the winter or summer.
-No heating as it never drops below 40 degrees in my garage even if it is -30 degrees outside, i just run a small ceramic heater when i work on something over the winter and it gets warm in under 30 minutes and the de-humidifier keeps everything dry.
-My storage tricks, Trickle charger on all 4 batteries out of the cars on a work bench, Fuel Stabil in all the gas tanks with a full level of gas, 3 Mouse Traps (Just in case) and Car Cover for each car for winter storage.

To me there is a garage to work on your cars and a garage to store your cars. A big difference in space.

The earlier tread is my home garage, strictly for parking a car and doing some cleaning and under the hood stuff. These photos are my "workshop", 800 sq ft bay as part of my business in a light industrial park.

Parking for three cars, or two with comfort.
6000 Lb Hoffman twin screw hoist
Sandblaster.
Three phase compressor
Press
Tools
Storage
memorbilia.
40" LED TV with full cable and HD

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Nice equipment! Three phase power is great to have, and the twin screw lift- sweet. I've thought about installing a VFD so I could have a twin screw lift at my house. I can think of a few other things that would be nice too, like one of those quiet/insulated compressors without a storage tank. For now, I have a 3 car garage for storage but my dream garage is only a set of plans I paid an architect to design. Hoping in the next 1-3 years it will become a reality.

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

I second the recommendation for the www.garagejournal.com.

I've got a small suburban garage (20'x21') and I put it together with a pretty low budget. I learned as I went, doing all of the work myself -- including setting the tile and digging the pit for the lift.

The total budget, including the floor, cabinets, benches and lift was less than $3,500. Everything you see is second-hand, re-purposed or home-made.

I do automotive work in it, and also some carpentry and metal fabrication.

I also made a website for it: http://www.12-gaugegarage.com

(This is not spam. I don't make any money off of the website and pay for it out of my own pocket.)

Work benches that fold down from the wall:

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/8585/bothdown.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/379/faceforwardup.jpg

There is no 911 that's been lowered too much to fit on this lift. And there's nothing to trip over when the car is out.

http://imageshack.us/a/img9/1673/noclearance.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img405/5157/648uplr.jpg

And it's got its own a video:

The 12-Gauge Garage Video

And yes, a video just about the lift I put in:

My Garage Lift

Is it always this clean? No. Not by a long shot.

http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/1904/humpty.jpg

But it does go back to clean very quickly -- that's the real accomplishment of it, I think. I finally took the time to work out a place for everything to go when It's not being used.

In practice, it makes a huge difference not having to spend so much time looking for things you've misplaced. I spent years doing that.

----I must have missed it, Jack. Where is the fridge??? Gotta be there somewhere. Not a good garage without a fridge. A buddy of mine in Scotsdale has a urinal on one wall because he got tired of going on the cactus outside. Kinda liked the idea!!!......Bill S

Thanks, guys!

No fridge. No room for it, I'm afraid. And the house fridge is only a few steps away. And a bathroom is right around the corner, too -- the garage and my office are the same detached structure.

I do have an opener, though.

Any of you guys have a "Morton" pole barn type building? I'm working with a rep in Florida on having them build a 60 x 70 x 12 building for me down there.

rubbinisracing 12-01-2012 03:25 PM

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Tony,

I considereed Morton before I built my building but decided to another way. Morton offered nice touches to customize the building and let it fit more with the architecture of other structures and appear less of a light industrial look. They are a large nationwide company with a good reputation and stand behind their work. The reason I went elsewhere was 2 fold: (1)cost, they where 50% higher (2)my main building is 100' x 200', morton typically uses trusses to support the roof and this prevented me from having a mezzanine for open storage. The only things I would have done different is built bigger and changed my eave height from 16' to 20/24'.

Howard, now THAT'S a building! I went out this morning and looked a 2 different Morton buildings. They do some nice work. Like you said, they are quite a bit more expensive than a standard building, but the quality sure seems to be there.

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Tony, Contact Thomas Payne. He can give you some first-hand info on his Morton building he had done a couple of years ago. I was at Tom's place yesterday and the new building is NICE!
You can get some detailed information on his entire build here if you have a couple of free months to read it.

I'll surf through it and try to find the page (or post number) where he begins to chronicle the new building.

Thomas is a great guy and I can assure you he will do his best to answer any questions you might have. He's also a member here (bb767) so you can check his profile for contact info, or PM me and I'll put you in touch with him.

EDIT: The saga of Tom's Shop restoration takes a number of twists 'n turns, but one of the early shots of the "Barn" is on page 39 (depending on your settings), post number 765.

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Another thing you may consider: Morton has a economy model building marketed under the Country Craft name. My son lost a metal building to an ice storm a few years ago and replaced it with the Country Craft branding. Although his was more of a utility type structure, I thought it was a good value for the money. 60' x 120' with 14' sidewalls and 12' x 16' sliding doors on two sides; total cost less a concrete floor, ..... $38k.

Thanks Bill. I did follow that thread! Fantastic job. I will shoot him a PM. The 2 buildings that I looked at today are very nice. The worksmanship looks very good too.

Bruce, I spent some time in AZ back in the late 70's. I was in Glendale and Sun City for a while. I remember "Indian School Road and the "Camelback Mountains". What cracked me up was I would be going through a town and in between the commercial buildings, there would be an old run down shack that had goats and donkeys in the yard!

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

We have Morton and country craft buildings. Morton posts are closer and several other things are nice, like heavier doors. The main shop is 56 x 76. They insulated it and we installed a propane fired instant water heater like you can get for a house. I think it says tek jr on it. The heater makes hot water that runs thru pipes in the floor. Might be higher costs at startup but it is great. Once the concrete is warm, it is toasty all winter. You can lay on the floor to work and its really nice. Also when you open the doors, you don't lose all your heat. Very efficient too. There is a company called crete heat that makes foam panels that have a vapor barrier on them. They snap together and your pipes snap into them. Saves alot of install time

TDW 12-02-2012 11:26 AM

Re: Lets see your garage/shop or any dream garages!

Thanks Bill. From start to finish of your building, did it go as planned? Were they on the job when they said they would be? Did you have any cost over runs? I am very picky about people doing what they say they will, when they say they will. All in all, were you satisfied with the whole project? This building is going up in central Florida, so I won't be too concerned with heating the floor. I am looking into their insulation package though.

Bruce, the wife and I are thinking about getting a Motorhome to do some traveling. She wants to go to the Grand Canyon, so we just may show up at your door one day!

Cal (zapper68) asked me to post this of his garage. He recently just completed it up in the mountains of Vancouver, British Columbia. I don't recall the square footage but it is A LOT. He also has a party/meeting room unstairs as well as lot of extra storage. Quite an interesting garage and shop on the inside and nicer than my home.
