Always wanted a set. Picked these up last week. Date code is mid 70s.

I'm going to work on them a bit and then assess the chrome. I'm already wondering if it's worth rechroming them lol.

Those look better than most. Nice!

Pro Stock John 08-23-2022 11:51 PM

I'll clean them soon and assess. I've wanted a set for a long time.

scuncio 08-24-2022 12:01 AM

Did you check to see if they will clear your calipers?

Pro Stock John 08-24-2022 12:25 AM

Not yet, I guess we'll find out lol. I have Strange dual piston drag brakes, think they will fit?

I picked up a set a couple months back that the chrome around the lug nuts and in between the spokes was peeling. I knocked all the flake off taped them up primed and used chrome paint turned out pretty dam good! By the way the are on the front of my 69 chevelle with factory disk brakes.

Hope so, they definitely don't clear the 4-piston '67-68 calipers without a spacer, but seeing they clear Mike's '69 Chevelle discs, you might be OK!

Good to know chevyman. These came off a MI drag car that was never daily'd or saw winter but I think the chrome has flaked off the pads, guessing that's pretty typical.

In the past I had some stuff chromed by CMP in Villa Park IL too.

Mr70 08-24-2022 04:41 PM

CMP (Victor) won't touch re-plating wheels of any kind at all today, haven't for some time now.

If u blow up my first couple pictures and look real close u can see the tape lines. I’m gonna send them out to Californa this winter to be rechromed.

Pro Stock John 08-24-2022 05:15 PM

Dang it's been quite a while since I had something chromed. I might try Chevyman's chrome paint idea, link to brand if I go that route? No one around here chromes wheels now?

NorCam 08-24-2022 05:23 PM

Sammy in PA sent a set of 15x4's out for replating, and I believe David in MD also sent a set out for plating. That said, I've heard it's around $1400 to have a set re-plated, plus shipping costs. I know one set was done in California and I wanna say Atlas was who did the replating.

BillD or someone else may have also replated a set as well if memory serves me correctly.

Not cheap in either case and there are only a few companies who still do these wheels. The centers are normally removed and rewelded after the plating which is why it's so costly.

I had a set rechromed, not worth the cost, at least in my experience. Don't get me wrong, the chrome shop did an amazing job but they took over a year to do them and the cost was staggering. Better off finding an extremely nice set of originals. I've seen nice sets trade hands for a lot less than I have in my wheels.

Pro Stock John 08-24-2022 06:36 PM

Good point Chuck, I picked these up for $500 and really just the lug areas are a bit affected. I don't plan to race on them but it might be fun to throw 'em on my '67 for cruising.

Chuck_Burg 08-24-2022 06:52 PM

Perfect!

Pro Stock John 08-24-2022 07:01 PM

Question, so originally speaking these type wheels had the same chrome finish on the front?

Salvatore 08-28-2022 02:23 PM

Yours look real good Chevyman. Nice job! Yes, like Grahame said, I had a pair done at Atlas in Texas a couple years ago. Very well done. Cost me about $950 for both plus shipping. I paid $550 for them off Ebay. I had Librandi's in the Harrisburg, Pa. area do my non R caps and I repainted the blue centers. They also came out very nice. That was about $150 so yea, crazy money. So, when somebody wants 2 grand complete for a real nice pair that is a pretty good price in my opinion. Plus, only have to pay shipping 1X.

I think this were appropriately priced at $500, what do you guys think? I did not clean all of the inside spoke area, you can kinda tell which ones I did. I just used a spray, didn't not put that much work into them. I'm thinking the pits/flakes would clean up even better.

John Brown 08-31-2022 08:38 PM

An older junk yard owner showed me how to make pitting less noticeable. Simply rub the area with a ball of aluminum foil. It will remove some of the tarnish, and some of the aluminum will be transferred to the pit. The aluminum is metallic in color and will help hide the pit. Been using that trick since my first car, and that's a long time.....

John Brown 08-31-2022 09:34 PM

Make that aluminum foil ball loosely crumpled.....

Pro Stock John 09-01-2022 01:37 AM

Wow I will try that thanks!

Pro Stock John 09-19-2022 12:50 AM

I'd let these go if someone is interested otherwise they just end up on the wall.

Pro Stock John 09-19-2022 06:14 PM

I used aluminum foil on one of them yesterday. They are cool as hell but I'm probably going to hang them on the wall unless someone local needs 'em. I don't see me going mid 8's on them.
