1970 Nova SS 4-speed

7 Attachment(s)
I have my eye on a car locally and am going to throw this out there and see if there is any interest. I have what I believe to be a 70 Nova SS 396 car. I bought it a couple of years ago with a 65 396-325 out of a passenger car in it complete with left side alternator mounting and all. I have since built a fresh 396 with GM Performance Parts aluminum heads and L78 solid flat tappet cam. It now has a M-20 in it but I have the original M-21. It has a 3.55 geared 12 bolt, correct big block cross member, heater core and frame mounts. I believe the car has been bumped up front at one point because the radiator support and hood have been changed. This is not a rusty car but has been banged around some in it's life. I have lots of pictures I can send if any one is serious.
The car came with SS wheels when I bought it but I was looking for something different so I rounded up a set of XT wheels with dog dish caps. Tires are Firestone repop Wide-Ovals with maybe 300 miles on them. I would be happy to give a honest detailed description to any one would like to call and discuss the car. It's far from perfect but it is a factory Red, bucket seat 4-speed car. $15,900 or $14,900 without wheels and tires. Thanks, Troy. (260)623-3345

Pictures sent this morning to all that have requested them. I'm trying to get back with those who have called. I don't own a cell phone so a lot of phone tag going on but I will get back with everyone. The car shows better in the photos than in person. Old paint, 25-30 years I'm guessing. Wheels are "IF" not XT's. Sorry to mislead anyone. Thanks again, Troy

That seems like a smokin' hot deal to me; even if it's a plain jane Nova and not an SS. Looks like a car you can spend a little money on and have a blast. Good luck with the sale.

Re: 1970 Nova SS 4-speed

Thanks guys. It looks like I'll probably be listing it on Ebay in a couple of weeks. I didn't really want to get involved with that circus although I had great luck and met many great people over the years selling on there. The last couple have been a disaster. Maybe I'll list my Rallye 350 instead. Is it possible the Oldsmobile faithfull are a more refined, mature group of enthusiasts? LOL...

The car left last night. Ironically it went to a long time buddy of mine. He hasn't had a musclecar since we were right out of high school 30 years ago. He was pretty excited, as I was that he's back in the saddle again... Thanks for all the kind words and interest in the car. Troy

Tell us more about that Rallye 350. Who told you Olds guys were refined and mature???? LMAO!!!

Markyodb2 01-01-2021 01:10 AM

how this car looking today?

Pacecar1969 01-01-2021 10:40 PM

Didn't the Novas have a different wheel than the XT for 1970. Looking for a set of XT's for my L78 - Looking for October, November, early December 1968. Thanks

Mr. Chevy 01-01-2021 11:50 PM

You could get the 5 spoke SS wheel or the rally wheels in addition to the steel XT wheels. You could also even get an SS car with the ugly PO1 full hubcap. You don't see that much though.

Starting in 1970 Chevy had a 14”x7” plain steel wheel coded CL.
Also, it was the last year for factory installed 14”x7” XT coded wheels.

JRSully 01-02-2021 01:05 PM

I believe the 70 CL wheels were more prevalent on the Camaro than the Nova for some reason. Most of the 70 Nova's I've seen through the 70 model year had XT's

WILMASBOYL78 01-02-2021 05:25 PM

CL wheels...

Sully is correct about the CL wheels...it was only used on the Camaro SS...the Nova still had the XT in 1970...the Nova SS was the only application for the XT wheel in 70.

The Camaro and Nova both used the CL version 71-72.

RobR 01-02-2021 07:54 PM

Just checked Chevy by the Numbers Book by Alan Colvin
Sully and Wilma you are both correct!

tom406 01-02-2021 09:31 PM

I wonder if it had to do with the small hubcaps used and the retaining nubs on the wheels? The 1970 Nova continued to use the 68-9 dog dish and (3 retaining nub) XT rims while the 1970 Camaro used the new baby moon cap and (4 retaining nub) CL rims. 1971 saw usage of same wheels and caps for Nova and Camaro SS.
