GM heritage collection selloff
I was told by someone at work that GM will be selling more of its cars from its Heritage collection at BJ in January. Has anyone heard about this and which cars they are selling? I checked BJs website but could not find it. Thanks in advsnce.

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
I read that it is the case, and in the coming week or two, Barrett-Jackson will put out pictures of each of the cars GM is selling off on their website. This would be for the Scottsdale, AZ auction Jan. 13-19, 2009.

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
I have the list but in the wrong format. Looks like 160 cars. Horrible way to market 160 cars..Tell everyone at the last minute. Ebay would have gotten them alot farther.

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
Pinky Randall,a very good friend a noted Chevrolet collector, has been collecting Chevrolet, cars, parts, and memorabilia for decades.
As he aged,he was approached by many to part out his collection,so he made a list and noted what we all wanted. He then called us up and stated what he wanted for the items we wanted. Some passed, others couldn't find their checkbooks fast enough. I was one who was getting ready to take a trip over and come back with as much as I could carry...and then GM stepped in and changed everything.CRAP! They personaly had a liason visit Pinky and make a list of all he had. They submited an offer in cash and Pinky accepted it,and good for him. Said it was more money then he would've ever made from selling everything individually & slowly.I was a lil upset when he told me this,as it was very sudden and I was getting packed up to go visit him when he called. With this news now,I hope maybe GM will keep going and sell off Pinkys collection as well.I'll be watchin for what I wanted, that's for sure.. |
Re: GM heritage collection selloff
That 1984 Fiero has Charley written all over it. Unless of course you already have one?

Rick, I have met and talked with Pinky many times over the years. He was very active with the VCCA. I had no idea he had sold his collection. He had some very nice cars! Grady

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
1970 W30 Olds?? Id like to know more about that one
|
Re: GM heritage collection selloff
i believe the Olds is the Orange one that they purchased from the Movie Demolition Man. Its a real 1970 442 but was cloned as a W30 for the Movie. In the Movie the car was Red, when GM Heritage restored it they painted it Orange or rallye Red as they call it. It was not a Lansing built car and it shows in the serial number.
The list also shows a 1970 SX, this is a model that is all original and was in The Olds Museum for years. It has less than 200 miles and to the best of my knowledge has never been titled. Ask for the warranty. Another Olds they have is a 72 indy pace car, 30,000 miles and original paint, but I dont see it on the list. I had a chance to see the Heritage collection this past summer, they had 750 cars in 5 buildings, judging from the list I dont see a lot of premium stuff that I had a chance to see in person this summer. Many of the later model cars may have EXP serial numbers. Paul |
Re: GM heritage collection selloff
To bad theres no 1969 Camaro Zl-1 show car or 1969 Zl-1 Corvettes in the list. Gm could take away alot of money woes with a few cars like that in the auction.

Thanks for posting the list I think those 89 ZR1s would be neat to have most notably the snake skinner. |

What is the ZR 2 big doggie? [/ QUOTE ] Les, the ZR2 was Chevys experiment with putting a 454ci motor in a modern corvette. The motor was basically an LS5 with a fabricated fuel injection setup. It was rated at 360hp. |
Re: GM heritage collection selloff
If the 94 Impala SS 6-spd car was the one built by John Moss, it had a lot of magazine coverage back then. He pretty much had free rein to build what he wanted. What ever happened, did GM close the doors on his toy shop?

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
Moss retired....

[/ QUOTE ] I was the one who handled the appraisal for GM and served as the Liason. I spent 3 full days in Houghton Lake personally going over all of the collection, which was nothing short of amazing. Pinky and his wife treated me like family and his eyes lit up often when I asked the history of many of the items. Pinky was adament about keeping the collection intact, and also wanted to have his basement, which was set up as a dealership, put on display as he had built it over the years. His children did not share his passion for all things Chevrolet, and knowing that he was getting older, he did not want to burden his wife with disbursing the collection after he was gone or going through the rigors of an auction. He knew that there would be lots of people who would show up saying, "Oh, Pinky said I could have this and Pinky said this needs to go to me" etc etc. He is a true gentleman and his life revolves around all things Chevrolet. I documented the collection with many photographs. Pinky knew what he wanted for the collection, and he knew the chances of having someone purchase it all, intact, would be a challenge. John Moss was the guy who convinced the powers that be that this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for GM, and this is when I was approached. After viewing the collection, I wrote a report that basically told them the amount he wanted was indeed an incredible deal and that if they were to write me a check for even two to three times what he wanted, there is no way in the world the collection could be duplicated. I was relieved when they came to agreeable terms with Pinky, and hopefully, this part of the GM Heritage Collection will remain intact. BA |

Pinky sent me photos of all he had,but asked that I return them once the GM offer was accepted,so I did.
Part of his collection was featured in a magazine just before he sold it all. If Bob doesn't have pics,I can look for it,but can't recall which mag it was right now.. |

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
I don't know about you guys, but I find this sale very troublesome. I'm sure the money that is generated wouldn't cover 5 minutes of General Motors Operating Expenses. Given the delay in announcing the sale, I'm assuming that it's either a "knee jerk" reaction by management or they are trying to make a statement. In either case, when the economy turns-around... this will look like a real Homer Simpson decision. Just my opinion, Ed https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif

There were articles about Pinky's collection in "Cars and Parts" magazine maybe 10 years ago... don't even know if that magazine even exists anymore. Was this article recent?

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
Some trouble with all of this as well. On one of the Olds boards that I frequent, they yelled out quick that they can't sell the Olds 'Darth Vader' concept car. Not because they do not want the history gone, but because they do not own it!!!! Bill Porterfield had signed over the title for that car to the R.E.Olds meuseum in Lansing. Oops!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: GM heritage collection selloff
Someone just told me a LOT of these cars can NOT be titled !
There is NO titles on quite a few of these cars as they were experimentals or proto-types.. Some dont have vin #'s https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Any truth to this ??? |
Re: GM heritage collection selloff
Some of the cars are EXP models and there is nothing different than the cars GM have sold off at other auctions in the past, sold on Bill of sale only. Many cars are ones that GM purchased along the way of putting together the collection and should not have any issues with Titles.
I looked at the BJ list yesterday and only read one ad for the Green Hot Rod that was commissioned by Olds for its 100th anniversary, its has no title. No different from buying a race car that was built from the ground up for racing. If someone had donated a car to the collection, that may be another story as to their right to resell it. i dont know how charity rules work with "Museums". Paul |
