Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
This post serves two purposes;
First, to get some feedback on what YOU think are standout Muscle Cars for the 1969 model year. Second, to put out the word that we are looking for very special cars for the "Class of 69" Showcase that we will be hosting at the Nickey Chicago Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, November 21-22, 2009. The criteria is this; 1. Car should be a single year model 2. Car MUST be a "top of the ladder" model, meaning the hottest performance model offered. 3. Car must be a show-stopper! In addition to your opinions and suggestions, we are searching for suitable cars for the Showcase. Let me get this started; 1. Dodge; Hemi Daytona, (check) 2. Pontiac; Trans Am Convertible, (check) 3. Buick 4. Oldsmobile 5. Ford 6. Mercury 7. AMC 8. Chevy 9. Plymouth 10. ?? This show will be built on what YOU, the Enthusiast, wan't to see (and/or bring), so...what do you think? Bashton MCACN Managing Member |

Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
I bought our COPO Chevelle new in '69. Compared to an SS396 with the L78 added, the price was about the same. It had a 5-50 waranty. While perhaps not as quick as an L88 or ZL1, it was immensely more user friendly. Running through the stock exhaust, it wasn't hindered as much as the afore mentioned cars so it wasn't all that much slower. Once the original ring seating problem was cured, I put well over 150K miles on the car and it was rock solid reliable, even starting once at -32F. It was docile in traffic and a tire burner if you wished. Being rare helps.....for those looking for that. There isn't much significant about the car as everything on it was off the shelf. It was just such a nice all around package with good seating for four. I may actually get mine back on the road again some day. You can always talk to Al, Grady, or others for good examples. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

The 69 ZL1 Camaro and the 70 Chevelle LS6 [/ QUOTE ] The criteria is 69. Now the can of worms is open. Cars built specifically for strip use will definately change your results. ZL1 and S/S AMX were built specifically for dragracing. Are you talking mass production or are racecars included? These things are never as easy as they seem. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Chevy: ZL1 Corvette Ford: Boss 429 Mustang Mercury: Boss 429 Cougar (these cars were built as 69's and campaigned as 70's) Plymouth: Hemi Road Runner Conv Dodge: Hemi Coronet Conv Olds: Hurst Olds Conv Pontiac: Trans Am Conv Buick: Stage 1 Conv AMC: S/S AMX |

As for power and high price, the ZL-1 Camaro fits that bill nicely. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif For Pontiac, the 1969 Trans Am Convertible, with the standard RAIII, is the the most expensive, but not on par performance-wise with a 1969 Firebird RAIV Coupe. |

Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
A watershed year, for sure. A favorite year of mine, as I was born that summer:)
For Mopar, I think you have to have an A12 car, as they really are the epitome of street performance and the influence of the culture coming around and influencing the manufacturers. I prefer the Super Bees, but I have a hard time arguing against a Hemi Daytona. So I vote for a 1969-1/2 Road Runner 440 6bbl. Preferably a 4sp in Rally Green. For Ford, its easy to pick a Boss 429 Mustang. That motor is awesome. (But I think a 428SCJ Mach 1 is probably the more significant car. Ford's best street motor with the first year of the iconic Mach 1 model makes for a tough combo) Maybe a Boss 429 and a Talladega (all were 428CJ)? For Mercury, you need a 428CJ Cougar Eliminator (1st year Eliminator pkg) or Cyclone Spoiler. A Spoiler II (ala Talladega) would complement your Daytona in the aero wars display, but I think they were all 351/FMX auto cars, which is kind of a letdown given the swoopy body. As for Boss 429 Cougars, I believe only one is found (in pieces) and its been "awaiting restoration" for over a decade. Buick-Stage 1 (1st year for that) 4sp ragtop is about the best you can do, but '70 has to be considered their peak, both in styling and performance. Olds-Hard to beat the H/O. Although I do love a nice black W30 4sp car. Chevy-ZL1, especially that loaded RS Camaro or one of the Vettes. All the COPOS are worthy, but ZL1 is really the epitome of a '69 only option. AMC- 2nd on the Hurst built SS AMX. Close second would be the Rambler SC/Rambler. Both potent and quite an eyeful AND '69 only. Pontiac-Hard to argue with your T/A ragtop selection, but at a public show, my money would be on an Orbit Orange RAIV GTO Judge (1st year) getting more attention, and being more distinctively "1969". A Mod Top w/matching interior Mopar would be a good addition as well. That's REALLY 1969. Good luck https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |
Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
Well, if you're going to display significant 1969 muscle cars, might as well add to the theme and play significant 1969 music hits
Na Na Hey Hey kiss him goodbye (the steam) Get back (the beatles) Suspicious minds (Elvis) Leaving on a jet plane (Peter, Paul and Mary Heard it through the grapevine (Marvin Gaye) Aquarius Let the sunshine in Crimson and Clover Every day people (sly and the family stone) Sugar Sugar (The Archies) In the year 2525 (Zager and Evans) I can't get next to you (Temptations) Honky Tonk Woman (The Rolling Stones) Dizzy (Tom Roe) and Finish it with Summer of 69 (Bryan Adams) not a 1969 song but fits the ticket If you were around in 1969 to appreciate these significant cars, you can certainly appreciate these songs...as they were all big hits. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |
Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
The single year criteria is going to keep the Boss 429 Mustang out, as well. The SS Hurst AMX is a single 1969 year entry, however the S/C Rambler is a single year model also. |

The single year only is going to squeeze the 69 SCJ out as well. Can we substitute the REAL contender the late 68.5 Mustang 428 CJ with 4.30 gears.

Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
Some great suggestions!
Let me reel it in a little bit; Dealer built Supercars, although obviously welcomed and wanted, would not be suitable for this particular display. Factory built racers, like the S/S AMX would indeed fit the criteria. The 68 1/2 would not, but I would LOVE to have one (or more) in the show. SportyWorty1: is this your car? If so, please consider joining us! I know there are already several California based cars heading in, so maybe we can fill a truck or two from California? As a sidenote, the mentioned COPO 427 Chevelles have agreed to join us. Grady will be a part of our Vintage Certification program, and I believe Albert will be a part of the sYc Supercars Showcase. I would really like to have an M-Code Runner represent the Plymouth camp, and a Hurst/Olds for the Oldsmobile. For Buick, this is a really tough one. Anyone own or know of a Stage II equipped 69? How about an unusual Stage 1? Ford/Mercury...hmmmm, let's see what surfaces. Any Cyclone Spoilers or Talledega's out there? Anyway...keep the idea's coming and if YOU have a suitable car, please let me know. Bashton MCACN Managing Member |

Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
I think I can get the Boss 429 in on a technicality.
All production Boss 429's were produced during 1969. The first production car, KK1208-(finished in Raven Black) was started January 5,1969. The last '70 Boss 429 produced, KK2558 (finished in Grabber Orange) was started in late Dec 1969 and officially shipped from Kar Kraft on January 6, 1970. Thus, I would argue that the Boss 429 experience was well focused on calendar year 1969. I submit they should be included in the show! |

Re: Significant 1969 Muscle Cars
D'oh! Of course Carousel Red for '69. It's just SO orange. But not Orbit Orange, of course. That's more of a yellow, right? (This inability to name colors properly, and the decision to start naming their cars with letters and numbers instead of proper names surely has something to do with their downfall.)
Bashton-no I don't have a Boss Nine. I have a friend with four (!) of them. There's a guy down south with nine. But there's lots of nice ones in the midwest as well. Go to the Boss 429 section of the Boss 302 Forum (www.boss302.com) and post a request for Boss 429 representation and you should find someone willing to share something nice. Good luck! |
