Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
I have been lurking around this site for some time now... ive spent alot of time reading everyones posts and figured it was about time for me to start one of my own... im currently working on my 1st project... 72 camaro z28... the car is pewter silver w/stand. black interior, all #'s matching... i guess when i say all #'s matching and date correct i mean most! engine, heads, carb., distributor (yes, dist.,which i found was an extremely rare part?), starter, coil, M-22 tranny, rear-end, intake, manifolds, smog system, wheels, valve covers, wiper motor and more that i probably missed... these are the items ive verified... im halfway into the restoration and am already ready to start another!!! although, a few of my good friends who are members of this site and have lots of experience have urged me to go one at a time... yet, i walk into their storage or garage and there are a handful of them...lol... their advice has been: do as i say, not as i do!!! anyways... i will try to take the time this weekend to post some pics of my progress to this point...

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
im open to any comments and even criticism... just be easy! i am a humble guy, but tend to raise my voice when someone gets a little too harsh and out of line... i would love to hear any feedback thru my process! and i do know about the tranny having the 6/9 inverted... i have had a gentleman (long-time member of this site) look at it, along with a post i started here, and seems that 99% majority agree that its a mistake that was probably made on the line... and apparently this is just one of the many times its happened... hope to hear from you guys and make new friends along the way!
thanks, scott |
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Looks like an awesome project. Lots of origional pieces there. Best of luck on the car.
Am I seeing things or is the car VIN 62117 and the block VIN 62117 but the tranny VIN has a flipped 6 and it shows 92117? That's wild. |
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Real nice, good luck with the project. Like the white headers, haven't seen that in a while.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Nice one to start with. Good color too! I would like to see the "in process" pictures as you go along if possible.

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
I like it. Z-28's are rare cars in 1972 because of the strike. Something like only 2,800 cars, making them the second rarest Z's after '67's. Last of the M-22's, last of the solid lifters and LT-1's.......they are the last of a breed. Hydraulic lifter'ed L-82's followed in '73....just not the same.

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
How are you sure it has a M22 in it?
|
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
the casting #'s on the maincase, extension housing & sidecover casting... and the C represents m-22... and also the plug bolt on the side i believe...
|
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Looking at the underside I knew it was an LA car judging by the amount of undercoating. Nice car. About time you posted pics.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Scott,
thanks for posting pix of your project. cant wait to see the final outcome. I'm glad you have the original dist, I was offered one awhile back and couldnt believe what they're worth. please keep us posted on your progress. |
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
jeff...
no joke! i had a friend looking for a 72z distributor and all he could find (and not even restored!) were 1600-2000! |

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
thanks... wasnt aware on the d.plug... but all the casting #'s and C-code match... have yet to dig as far as opening her up though...

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Excellent car to play with!! I tend to be a little partial to that color combo on 2nd Gen Camaros myself (currently halfway plus through my silver 73 Z resto)....
Quick question for you guys: In one of the pictures I believe I'm seeing what appears to be a GM parts tag (perhaps on a fenderwell?) with a little undercoating on it. Does that mean that whatever part this tag is on has been replaced at some point in it's life? Or has anyone ever seen a GM parts tag installed on an original unmolested car? Just curious...... Charlie |
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
a few parts have gotten back from being re-skinned... let me know what ya think... original valve covers, original manifold and original alternator... the original dist. is having the advance adjusted, but i will post it in a few days

Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Undercarriage looks good, what color and type paint did you use?
|
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
its actually a tad darker than it appears in the pics, and looks right on... used: PPG DP74
|
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
Those would not be the original valve covers with those part numbers. Those are later replacements.
Wont be able to tell once they are on the car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
