FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

My friend and co worker just finished a frame off restoration on this 70 GTO. The car is a real ram air IV car and he told me that there were only about 690 of these made. He has owned the car since he was 16 and is now in his early 40s.

He located the original, numbers block from a guy in the Akron, Ohio area a few years back. The body color is originally atoll blue which is what color it is repainted. Has a 4speed, black bucket seat interior.

Car was bought new at Llewellyn Pontiac which was in Lorain, Ohio. The motor sounds hairy... Car is going up for sale and will be at Best of Show Automotive in Mentor, Ohio on display/consignment.

I snapped these pictures of the car Saturday afternoon at his garage. He did not mind if I posted the pictures, so I thought someone would like to see them, plus everyone likes pictures!! I am not a Pontiac Guy but this car really looks nice and stands out!! I certainly would love to own it!! Very Nice Car!!

Enjoy... Rich

Nice car, original engine too is awesome as the vast majority of these cars lost them very quickly, when new.
I do wonder why did they put the Judge stripes on, though?

Shouldn't a GTO,(especially a RA IV)have power front discs, like an SS96? Just wondering.

Steve and others, I asked him the same thing and he stated that the striping could have come on these cars from the factory. He stated this particular car did not have it on the build sheet, but the stripes could have been put on by the dealer as well when the car was new which would not obviously show on the build sheet. He stated he researched this with all the Pontiac "GURUS" before doing it.. He said it was an extra addition that he wanted to put on the car..

I like the stripes personally, I think they add a lot to the body... I don't know about the spoiler or the non disc brakes however.. I'm guessing they are correct though, like I said he researched alot before doing the car.. I know he wanted it all factory correct...

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

Actually, the optional sport stripe for the GTOs in 1970 was the previous year's 69 Judge stripe that flowed from the top of the fender line to the rear quarter window, and not the 70 Judge fender brow stripes.

Was the PHS coded for the rear spoiler? That's another item that everyone seems to add to the 70 GTOs. It's kind of like the 69 Camaro cowl induction hood curse.

If he's keeping it and it makes him happy that's all that matters. But if he's trying to sell it to a collector as a correct restoration the seller is going to be fielding the same question over and over again.

It is definitely a neat car, in a great color. I wouldn't mind having it (if I won the lottery). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

455s got the 12 bolt in 70 not RAIVs and the drum brakes were standard on a RAIV GTO - better for drag racing!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Beautiful car! It's easy to see why the 70 GTO, the 70 Chevelle SS, and the 70 GS are considered styling masterpieces of the Musclecar Era!

At Mecum last Fall, we watched a 70 GS Stage 1 4-speed go across the block that was all original, and all the talk around us was about how beautiful the color was. The car was Diplomat Blue. This was a new color that was shared by GM intermediates in 1970 - Buick (Diplomat Blue), Pontiac (Atoll Blue), Oldsmobile (Twilight Blue), and Chevrolet (Fathom Blue).

Fantastic car, and congrats on the resto! Those RAIV cars continue to climb in value, and it's easy to see why. There were far fewer 1970 RAIV GTO’s made (less than 800) than the other GM Supercars. The LS6 (4,400+), W-30 (3,100), and Stage 1’s (2,465) are more common.

Years ago I have a 1971 GTO Judge CONVERTIBLE but can't remember for the life of me if it was a Ram Air IV or not. I sold it to a Pontiac dealer in the Chicago burbs back in the mid-late 70s. I always wondered where the car is today as it is my understanding that it was 1 of 17 built.

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

Would not have been a factory installed RAIV. All '71s were 455s from the factory. I have also heard the "1 of 17" for the 71 GTO ragtops. Rare car indeed.

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

The 1 of 17 was for 1971 GTO Judge ragtops. They all came with 455HOs. The Ram Air III and IV 400 engines ended in 1970

Your right it was a 455. Not being a Pontiac guy I had always wondered about the 400--455 thing. I always thought of the 455 as a station wagon engine.

Anyway, that is what it was. It was Dark Blue with the wild muticolored side stripes console 4 speed car. If anyone know of where the car is today I would be interested in knowing and may be able to help with ownership chain.

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

If it was the original color, there's a very good chance it wasn't a real Judge ragtop.

StealthBird 11-11-2009 01:58 AM

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

And the 71 455 H.O., which came in all 1971 Judges and all 1971-1972 Trans Am's (optional in the 71/72 GTO, and optional in the Formulas) was definitely not a station wagon engine. It was one of the best engines of the 1971-1972 era. Many people confuse the 1971-1972 455 H.O. engines, which had round port heads and an aluminum intake (basically a low compression version of a RAIV 455) with the 1970 455 H.O., which, unfortunately, was just a basic D-port engine 455 with a standard steel intake. In 1970, the 455 H.O. was basically the 400 H.O., with extra cubes. In 1971, the 455 H.O. was a true high performance engine with many unique parts.

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

The '71-72 HOs were the kings of low compression engines till, perhaps, the Super Duty came about. The only car that may have had an edge was the 1971 LS6 Corvette.

Why do you say that?

I bought this car about 1976-77. No one was cloning these cars then. I bought it from a local guy in my small home town who bought it from the original owner. I don't know the name of the color but to me, it was a medium--dark blue color.

As I said I sold it to a Pontiac dealer, who of course tried to grind me on the price. I told him that he certainly knew that it was a special car that they couldn't have made many of and if he wanted it there was no negotiating on the price. I think i sold it for $4700. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Top dollar for a car like that at the time. I had no idea of how few were built when I sold it.

My guess is that the Pontiac dealer that bought it may still have it or knew the production numbers on it and it sold to another collecter at some time but it was over 30 years ago. With this in mind and as few as there were made I would think that the car is still around and would not be hard to verify. There cetainly are people that are tracking these cars.

It was definately a 4 speed and the stripe pattern was the same as the 71s on that site. Was that stripe pattern available in 1970? I also remember the car being a darker blue than the one pictured on that site.

As Steve stated, The Judge accent stripes were the same for both '70 and '71.

Info below is from Eric White's excellent, GTO/GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide (book).
Depending on body color they were:

Blue-Orange-Pink
Yellow-Blue-Red
Yellow-Black-Red
Green-Yellow-White

Additionally, the optional D98 Rally Stripes (N/A on Judge) were:

1970, White-Red-Black
1971, White/Red or Black/Red

HTH...

My car was DEFINATELY a Judge and had the multi colored stripes that surrounded the tops of the front fenders and rear quarters.

I could be wrong about the year but I have had it on my written list of "memorable cars owned" so It is not like I am drawing on my recent memory of something from 30 years ago. I truely think it was a 1971. I remember many years ago when I first heard the 1 of 17 number I thought (gulp) I used to owned one of those.

the front ends (and hoods) of the 70 & the 71 are WAY different, hard to confuse the two

70 (had the 68-69 style hood):

71 (new front "snout" and hood):

Maybe it was a '71 455HO GTO with the wing and stripes added to the car, they only made 21 4sp's and 27 auto cars.

Re: FOR YOU PONTIAC DUDES, 70 GTO RAM AIR 4 PICS

please don't take this wrong. But HOW do you know it was a Judge? The engine could be a 455 ram air and the stripes/spoiler could have been added. Did it have the telltale 'judge' emblem on the glovebox cover? As you seen with my link there were NO dark blue 71 Judge conv's made..
