WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
Fellas -
The thread about the other 68 Z garage find has me wondering about a car that I know about. It's an original 68 Z, currently black but believe it was Burnished Saddle originally, with black guts. Car is a very low mileage (under 10,000?) original with an LT1 (original engine sitting next to the car), Centerlines, slicks sticking out past the wheelwells, and 5.13 gears, IIRC. Don't think it's been on the road since the 70's or so. It's all there, do not believe it has been cut up at all (may have driveshaft loop installed, but no tubs, cage, etc), and it appears to be 100% rust free. I think I have some pics of it at home that I will have to find. Car is not officially for sale, but I know the owner fairly well and am thinking about making an offer just to see if he is interested. I know it's difficult to put a number on it without pics, but any thoughts on value? $30-$35k? Thanks, Scott |
Re: WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
Judging by your description I would say you are in the ballpark. However, without documentation, the originality of a repainted 68 Z28 will always be in question. Docs would solidify the value.

Good point. What items/castings/markings, etc, are Z/28 specific? Obviously the block, but what else do you look for? The air pressure tag on the inside of the glove box, right?
Thanks, Scott |
Re: WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
Paperwork, paperwork and paperwork for 68Z's - protecto plate, build sheet and any other invoice related info would be the key to ascertain the originality of the car. The mechanical stuff above is helpful when no paperwork is avail - but it does NOT replace the value put on orig paperwork for the car.

Look to see if you can find/see the dates on the trans. and rear. Look at the fuel line and gauges. How long has your friend had the car. Any past owner history. Have Jerry MacNeish come down and look at it BEFORE you spend your money.

Re: WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
Car has been in the family (2 owners) since new, so owner history is not an issue. Have not asked about paperwork, but will before I make an offer.
Thanks, Scott |

get two or three cars line up and it gets cheaper as you can split up the travel expenses.

Did you buy it or is still for sale

Re: WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
You had stated that it was not caged. You can see the roll bar through the windows. Interior/seats behind the car.

Re: WIW - 68 Z/28 Day 2 Garage Find?
Yeah, I think you're right on the cage. Never did look inside the car; when I was there, I was focused on another car.
Pulled up my notes on the Z. More details - according to the owner, it ran 14.30's as delivered. Has 5.87 gears, not 5.13. Ran 11.22 with a tunnel rammed 302. 11,000 miles. 2d owner who has it now bought it from his brother, who was the original owner. Conflicting details on the engine. Notes say the original 302 was blown up in 1970 or so and that it has a non-original 302 in it now, but think the owner told me that it had an LT1 now and that he had the original 302. Not that it really matters. I haven't been able to buy the car yet. Guy who owns it knows I want it, but these stories never seem to have happy endings -- I expect to hear one day that he sold it to a friend for $5,000. Scott |

You have to 70 GTO that Jim did the motor on? I am in Richmond and Jim and LD do all of our motor work. Jim is very proud of the motor in your car.

</div></div> Yep, that's me. Jim is a good friend; met him in 2005 or so when I was living in Charlottesville. He's done a few motors for me (RAIII and RAIV) and did a 67 HO 400 for a buddy. Great guy and second to none when it comes to coaxing HP out of a Pontiac. Scott |
Resurrecting this thread for an update - spoke with the owner yesterday and the car is back on the road. Owner confirmed that the car had 11k miles on it; now up to 12k.
Repainted original colors of bronze with black stripes. Original 302 was indeed blown up years ago. Has a 69 model 302 now, but owner is working on assembling a numbers correct 68 302 for it. |
Thx for update. Welcome back! Been a while.
