My first recollection of this car was in 2005 at the Atlantic City Auction.

Then in 2005 it parked beside me at the Maryland Chevelle Show (pic attached). My memory tells me the car was gorgeous, but the owner at that time turned me the wrong way. I tried to take up several general car guy conversations with him and received very little pleasantness in return (kind of snobbish?).

Then the car went to California I guess. Been on Ebay many times in recent years. I have pictures from the March/08 Ebay listing (Redwood City, CA). Starting bid at that time was $275,000. By the end it did not meet reserve.

I can't speak for authenticity of it, but it was purdy when I saw it live.

Re: L89 Chevelle

Isn't this the same Dusk blue 1969 L-89 chevelle convt. we saw go across the block at Dana's spring classic auction @ Boone co. fairgrounds here in 2005-6?
I remember that one was nice, but not varified to have the born with engine & had the engine compt. graffiti all over it & sat way too high. The seller at the time was younger guy from Iowa he said, and wanted 300+K in the staging lane he told us that friday afternoon.Once it hit 250K on the block,he dropped his reserve and it sold for near 280K.It was the same year/auction that RedAlert & the 26 mile survivor 1970 Chevelle were there, under the tents at spring Belvedere when it downpoured for awhile.

Isn't this it again?...Lot#S129 sold for $160K @ May 2009 Mecum..VIN #136679B317045

It is a beautiful car. Lots of eye appeal. It appears to ride high in the air, but, maybe that's just the camera.

Gorgeous car, but for 300k, and all the paint daubs, wouldn't they detail the shocks?

Re: L89 Chevelle

I talked with the owner when this car was at Mecum in `05-06.
He was the very same guy that has the "1 of 1" L89 Nova now. What's his name..........Dave Frendl or something along those lines?

Re: L89 Chevelle

I believe this is the same chevelle that was restored by Thorton Body Works (the Oldsmobile guys) around the corner from me in Telford, Pa. Saw it several times in their shop. Also down Atlantic City auction a few years ago like another member stated. Very nicely done! Not sure who owns it now though.

Thats my old car I bought it from the original owner in 93. Sold new at Porter Chevrolet Newark De. I sold it in 2000 to Mike Byrnes in Chalfonte Pa. The display board details all of the owners history. This L-89 Convertible led me to the Red L-89 that I wound up finally getting in 2004

Re: L89 Chevelle

Definately a Real L-89 convertible, the claim 1 of 3 is wrong because I have had 2 and know where 2 are all real converts at this time. I have all of the as found Fossil pictures that where taken and presented to the experts at the time. They were viewed by Jeff Dotter, Mark Meekins, Roger Ausley,to name a few and several of them viewed it in person. PM me or call me I have all of the details. I did not know that the same owner of this who bought this in 2005 owns the supposed L89 Nova. This one and the red one Deffinately have original 842 Aluminum heads !!!!!!!!

Larry Bowman's car. I thought he bought it at a Mecum sale, and later ran it through another Mecum (or RM?) sale where it did not sell.

Re: L89 Chevelle

Hi, Jim, that's cool it's an original DE car cuz it's a small state, after all.

I did email the owner asking about the claims of "1 of 3" since I am a numbers guy and know better. While the owner explained what some "experts" claim, he also was reasonable about it rather than trying to puff it up for the sake of the auction.

BTW, my car was originally sold at Kent County Motors in Dover, and of course there's the famous Union Park Super Duty Tempests . . .

Theres a red bench seat 4 speed conv for sale in the St Louis area, documented with an original window sticker...ive never seen it but the guy is an avid chevelle guy down on his luck and this is the last car he has....really ruff missing the original drive train but it is what it is...he wants $50 grand.down from 75..dunno if its worth it but its a red L89 vert...at least thats his claim..ive never seen the sticker either...
I have seen some of his other cars...a few 396 convert two L78 novas, and a couple L79 Cevy II's..at one time the guy had the world by the short hairs..nice guy too..whatta shame they are all gone...

Re: L89 Chevelle

The car definitely site a bit high. I know that will be fixed before November.
Also needs a refresh to the 10-year old restoration.
The bare metal parts need a good steel wool and oil bath.

She has had a few owners since her restoration, now time to put her back to perfect again.

I love 69 Chevelles sitting at the original height. (good plan)

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: DW31S</div><div class="ubbcode-body">No answer to Charlie's question about original engine?!?!?!? </div></div>

I might have responded sooner, but figured that it wasn't that important given only four question marks and three exclamation points followed your post. Had you used eight questions marks and seven exclamation points I would have obviously responded twice as quick.

Joking aside, It is my understanding that the car does not have the original block. According to interviews and records, the car dropped a valve during the time it was being used as a dealer demo at Porter Chevrolet. The failure took out the block. It was replaced by Chevrolet under warranty with a CE block.

The CE block was still in the car when discovered in 1993.

I believe the engine block currently in the car is date-correct, and unfortunately somewhere along the way it became VIN correct... Personally, I'd rather it still have the warranty-replaced CE block. I'll be making some phone calls, but I doubt we'll find that at this stage.

As a side note: maybe it's just my opinion, but I feel too many people seem to put way too much value in this whole &quot;born with engine&quot; thing. Sure, it's great to find a 40-year old car that <span style="text-decoration: underline">hasn't</span> been thoroughly enjoyed by someone else, but then I'm just as happy to appreciate a beautiful and rare car that's already experienced a fun life. <span style="font-style: italic">...and I guess the same could be said about women.</span>

What mattered to us about this car was that it is a well-known, documented, authenticated and accepted L89 4-speed Chevelle convertible -- and a gorgeous color combo to boot.

I've already spoken with a couple folks that know the car well. If anyone has anything beneficial to add, please do.

Cheers,
-Brian

I think you will find lots of good history on this car, I will send the advertisements from the last few times it sold.

A recent picture (after the ride height was corrected).

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...velle_8780.jpg

Also, since the motor was previously discussed, we've obtained a couple more pictures of the engine's pad stamp when the car was found in 1993. # CE971700.

Update: We've been in talks with the original selling dealer's son -- this car was reportedly his demonstrator, and he is planning to pay us a visit this fall to examine the car and share his memories of the six months he drove it. Combined with the authentication interview/letter we obtained from the first retail owner, this 18 month research project one is nearly complete...

Brian,

My client just recently SOLD her back....to RK.
I am so glad I got the chance to improved her with finding and restoring the correct parts that were taken off of her along the way since Jim Brady owned her. Hope this does not happen to her again.

Reminds me of a cartoon, maybe in Playboy years ago, showing a groom carrying his virgin bride across the threshold and she says, &quot;I hate to be touched.&quot;
