1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
4 Attachment(s)
This is a car to torture NJ Steve with. Not my car but I got it for another member here. A real 73 SD with 1700 orig. documented miles. The history as I know it for now. It was either sold to or won by a PGA golfer named John H McGeary Jr from Boca Raton Florida. The dealership it came from was jack Nicklaus Pontiac in Delray Beach. Then in 1985 he donated it to the Benjamin School of North Palm Beach. If you look up the school it has Jack Nicklaus as a trustee. On the bill of sale it lists the license plate as "Farbird". Then it looks like it gets sold to PGA pro golfer Bruce Lietzke and miles on Oklahoma inspection sticker show 01402. Then I'm told Bruce trades another PGA golfer Gil Morgan a 67 435 hp Vette roadster for it in July of 1985. Gil has owned it up till now. Mike McCollough from Worldwide Musclecars has been storing it for Gil since 2001 inside his shop. I know Gil and Bruce are PGA Golfers, just not sure about John. It runs like a new car and still has the window sticker stuck to the window. What a great car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=046.JPG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=010.JPG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=013.JPG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=023.JPG

Wow is that ever nice.

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Man that car is stunning and brings back memories; my father ordered a near identical twin to this car late 1972. The only differences would have been my Dad went with crank windows but opted for the manual transmission.
When he placed the order the dealership said that they could not guarantee that he'd receive an SD in the car (I guess due to the connecting rod issues?) Anyway, his '73 TA was delivered with the standard 455 / 4 speed combo; not the fastest car in the world but, it looked killer and I loved it. I hope the new owner of this TA adds a few miles to it before putting it away. |
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Is it me, or does that dealer tag look later than 1973?
|
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
I've heard of this car but never saw any pics until now, very cool.
Is the spare original to the car? It looks like the correct tire but looks to have more than 1,700 miles on it...could be just a bad angle. Mike |

Actually it's pretty funny since 99.9% of the potmetal dealer emblems we see are old, and pitted, and have lost their paint, when you see one that is literally brand new, it doesn't seem real! |

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
wow
awesome that has survived storage well I see why the original tires were replaced (the spare is original). The belts always broke loose and shifted, I had two sets of those tires back in the day, they were JUNK, brand new ones that I was given to replace the defective originals went bad within 500 miles ... I had to drive 60 miles from the mountains to get to civilization and couldn't go over 35 because of the shifted belts - they were awful BUT Firestone DID give me yet another set, NOT the Steel Radial 500 series, to fix the situation |

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=082.JPG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=080.JPG </div></div> Interesting shot here: For followers of my build thread, I duscussed the factory problem with the polyethylene valances and how they broke immediately upon installation on the cars, due to the inaccurately cut mounting holes that were off by as much as an inch in places. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...6&page=100 Here you can see that the top left portion of the valance that mounts to the bottom of the urethane nose has broken its two mounting points, just like the white valance in my thread, hence the gap. (the area directly under the passenger side headlight). This was caused by the assembly line workers who manhandled and tried to stretch the lower portion of the valance to mount to the underside of the radiator support. All it did was rip away the upper mounting points from the stress. This was the reason GM then issued a technical service bulletin replacing all of the polyethylene valances with the 70/71 stamped steel valance. |
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Incredible time machine! Never thought I'd see a SD with less than 2000 miles.

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Awesome piece of history and thanks for sharing!! Hopefully this car ends up with it's own webpage similar to your Z's page. The information would be priceless!

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Steve, My 73 Formula has the exact same structural crack. When I first got the car, I thought that the previous owner had hit something but it didn't show any cosmetic damage. Thanks for the insight.
Charlie, Awesome T/A! let me get on the list for the future or in case he changes his mind. Happy New Year! Ed |
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
this car belongs in a museum.wonder how many like this are around.?not many is my guess.

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Nice car even though its Red! Ha, just had to since it appears most of them are/where.
The valance thing is a mounting issue for sure however I've seen quit a few 30k+ cars thats still sport their originals without any cracks and/or breaks. Maybe it all depended on the beginning of the week or the end for those production boys? Would like to see it in person for better documentation however if you have any other photos of the rear undercarriage mainly axle and suspension would be appreciated. Along with the front since there should be another spoiler off the radiator support. Quit a few things are different like the bolts for the rear bumper are usually smeared with undercoating around the heads and these are not. Its egr valve looks silver instead of gold cad, the resonators rusted out or aged similar to the exhaust pipes(due to lack of heat these never burnt off?), the spare is a GR70-15 but looks used ? and a few other items are different. What is the build date on this car ? Also I know there where more then one parts vendor for most items used in assembly which can account for most of my notes above. Killer Car and want to Thank You for posting. Hopefully we al get to see it in the future in person to review and document Thanks again for posting! Brew |
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
That car needs to be documented for an SD restoration guide.

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
A car like this is why I’m in the hobby. Like art, this is an original, not a reproduction (I like reproductions too) and it should be recognized as such. There is virtually nothing that gets me as excited as a true time capsule.. This car offers a true 3D picture of how these cars were originally built and their hidden secrets. The plating, craftsmanship, components used, stampings, inspection marks, anomalies all provide an accurate account of the assembly process. All I can say is unbelievable, and this car needs to be displayed at the MCACN show for all of us to drool. Maybe the Pontiac guys will put together an SD display for 2011.
Congrats to the new owner |
Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
Charley you get two for the price of one... I feel tortured as well !
That car is not only beautiful , it is a beautiful example of one of my favorite body's of all time. I just found the owners of my old T/A and sent them a letter with photos a month ago introducing myself and they never responded to me I may have been happy with this as a replacement:) |

Plus, the font doesn't scream 1973 to me. I managed to get an original dealer tag years ago, but then stopped by a few years later to get a backup (just in case). This time they were plastic, although in the same style. |

Re: 1973 SD Trans Am with 1774 miles
The heater core and two heater hoses were changed and I have them. Also the gas tank and hoses were replaced in 85 guessing by what looks like 1985 date on the tank.
