Kurt, Sam..I want to dyno it..just have to find the right guy here on the east coast..It should make some good numbers although I went small on the cam as I am running a T 56 trans/3 73 gear..so it needs to pull at lower RPM'sfor the highway rides..heres the cam card:

Dan.this motor is going in the malibu..the 427 is going ing the Beaumont!

Albert, looking good. I will be asking more as I'm going a different route but about the same. My ZL-1 is using a 4" stroke 476 inch deal with 074's and 198 intake. Mines going in a '69 Nova with a Richmond 5 speed. Would like to know what this dyno's when you get it done. did you happen to get that intake ported to the heads? I will be doing mine, as I'm going to be running a bit more cam and compression.

Re: new 489 ZL-1

ALbert I have used AED in the past for carbs. They were the suppliers for Bill Mitchell crate motors and I had a problem with the fuel system. These guys were great to work with and I used them for a couple of other motors I put in other cars with no problems. I would give them all the information of the engine and car combination and they would build a carb to fit my needs always great service at a fair price. If you are interested e-mail at and I will get you the contact info.

OK guys..its alive!!!..came to life this afternoon and had a nice smooth break in..no real problems..a couple of leaky fuel lines and a cranky distributor, sounds real strong..quick first pull with 34 degrees, the carb out of the box, the valves a little noisey and the dyno distributor..633 hp @ 6100..648 tq @4500...were thinking there may be 20-30 more left in it..well play more tomorrow..I'm stoked! Hey Al,
I have had AL do motors for me for close to 20 years. As far as I am concerned there is none better in the area. He has done 30 plus motors for me never a problem. He's like Doc from "Back to the Future". Some of the recents have been 3 67 L-71's stock looking and passed NCRS judging but they now have 580-590 HP. Did a few 302's in the 460-470 HP range. You name it he can do it.

Re: new 489 ZL-1

so, how it this running? Make any passes at the track yet? Mine is under way as another motor in the shop got in the way as it's going to LeMans to run in a vintage 'Vette. They used some of my "other" parts of another 427/433 I had. This one is a 4" stroke, .030 over pumpgas deal. Steel block that WAS mine. 074 heads and my 163 intake with a 680 cam and she made just over 740 Hp.

My 476 we hoping to get in the 800-850 range with 074 heads and 163 intake. A lot of R&D went into the "LaMans" motor that we are putting into my 476.

John..motor runs good!..a real blast to drive although it ate the first clutch up..all fixed up now..can't get enough tire under it to hook up..it just bounces off ther limiter smoking the tires....

Re: new 489 ZL-1

Albert, talking with the engine builder on Sunday, man he's PUMPED about this. Now this shop builds some pretty wild motors. and for them to get this worked up is pretty good for me. There's going to be a lot of time and effort put into this.

I really wanted to go with a stick, just don't think I can. so most likely a T400 and a gear vender. Goal is to be able to run in the 8's with it ON MOTOR. That will be a tall feat for sure i know, but I'm quite confident that 9.50 are the without much worrying. Trying to keep as OEM original as I can but for the headers. So when I open the hood, people think it's just a stock car. "MIGHT" run a FAST EFI set-up with a single thottle body for better road manners and we "think" we can pump gas the 13-1 comp.

But here in Ontario, it's a long winter, so will keep the updates going as they come. BTW here are some of the know specs.

- 052 block @ .100 over
- Eagle 4340 crank (lightened)
- Eagle H-beam rods 6.535 long
- SRP 13-1 piston (messaged)
- ARP bolt and headstuds everywhere
- 074 heads done by AFR and cleaned up some more
- 163 intake, cut, welded, complete redo on it
- Solid roller cam in the mid .700 range
- .904 Jesel lifters with priority oiling
- trends pushrods (trying to run 1/2" double tapers)
- Titan sportsman pump.
- COMPLETE Calico coated bearings
- Cometic gaskets.

Going in my '69 Nova SS396 car.

So that's it. I have a few carbs I can run, but would like to try the FAST EFI and my buddy is the head tech guy for them and we've talked about what we can do.

Re: new 489 ZL-1

Albert, just a little streetcar motor. Now for the serious build, that might be the 1200+hp 498 in the '67. That was a serious build

Re: new 489 ZL-1

Albert, just got a bit of "unsettling" news from the machine shop. They say there must have been a bit of "core shift" in my block as there is not a lot of "meat" around the lifterbores on the drivers side of the block. So meeting with them next week to discuss and might have to drop the lifters back to an .842 from the .904's. Rest of the rotator looks good. Was warned about the amount of nitrous this motor "can consume" as they want to keep it under a 400 shot? Piston is out-of-the-bore buy about .015" too.

I was glad to hear that the head stud's are a custom piece. Once removed, it was noticed that the threaded end into the block is about twice as long as normal and block holes are deeper then the OEM chevy? Must be why this motor made some jam and helped stay together. WE also have some trick's to help keep the 074 heads from coming apart too.
