Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
Lets see how wild we can get with finding Musclecars that were either Dealer converted or Factory freaks. I'll start things off with the James Garner BAJA SC/ramblers.

Feb '11 MCR (one with Sully's sweet FB '70 Nova in it) has some nice street freaks in it. Love the paint on the cover car!!!

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
What is a factory freak?
I could name a '67 Park Lane with a 410 4-speed, but it's not really a freak because it was offered by the factory. Different people have different inferences on what a freak is. |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
I guess factory freak is a rather vague term. Things along the lines of COPO's, 4 door Hemi cars, fleet orders (think Bengal Chargers) are along the lines of "freaks" IMO.

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
I know of a 61 Dodge 4dr sedan, factory D-500 long cross ram, ex Kansas Highway Patrol car. Sorry, no pics.

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
In 1960 Chrysler built 9 300F with 4 speed transmissions and 400HP 413 with soldid lifter cams. The cars were intended strictly for a few chosen drivers to compete in Daytona speed week. 7 cars ended up in the hands of selected customers, Andy Granantelli being one of them. 2 made it to "good" Chrysler customers not involved in Racing. The cars were beasts to drive on the street.
http://chrysler300country.com/300F_special.htm http://www.carpictures.com/Chrysler/...00B9H134208223 4 are known to exist today with one just recently selling for $400,000. Paul |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
Now were rolling. How about the 4 1964 2% Mopars?
Ramchargers, Dodge Boys, Melrose Missile and Lawman. An amazing read. "Lawman" 2 %er |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../imageaspx.jpg </div></div> 10 or 12 years ago, I knew a kid with a 69 Cougar painted up just like that Cuda. He'd found it in a local garage. It was a 70s time capsule, red tinted windows and all. Had a worked 429 with a 4 speed and some ridiculously low gear in the back. The thing couldn't get over 70 mph, but it was pure hell stoplight to stoplight. |

Yep, that's about what she looks like. Not nearly that nice, but still all in one piece after all these years.
How about a Knafel Golden Sabre? Can't post a pic, I'm on my phone. |

He sure does Bruce. I think one of these went across the block out here in AZ last month - strong $ (maybe $400K)

I thought so Sam!

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
Don has a white hardtop that was one of the original Daytona cars. He also has a black convert that is believed to be a conversion that he did.
A black hardtop was supposed to go through RS in 2009,but the owner pulled it out after the tents collapsed, fortuneately the car was not damaged. Paul |

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Fre
How about a 70/71 Pontiac T-37 455 HO 4 speed or a 19701/2 Falcon 429 4speed...

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Fre
What are we looking at as a definition of Factory freak?
If the average citizen could order it, even if only two or three people ordered it in any given model year, does it fit the criteria? The Pontiac and Falcon could be ordered right from the assembly line. The Off road Scramblers and the 4 speed Cyryslers were done off the assembly line. Would unusual colors come under this definition? I know of a 70 442 Convert ordered in Plum Crazy a Chrysler color. Stripe delete on a W30 = factory Freak. Are the 50 + cars from different manufactures to qualify for NHRA considered under this definition? Swiss Cheese Pontiacs? 14 built Thunderbolts 100 built 66 W30 Olds 54 built 66 WO23 Dodges and Plymouths 50 of each. 68 Hemi Dart and Hemi Cuda 50 of Each by Hurst off assembly line. Canadian Pontiacs with big block Chev engines. There is a 67 Olds Delta Convert with 3 on the tree that I have seen at Olds Shows. The local Ford Dealer had a 66 LTD 4 dr hardtop in their showroom 428 4 speed car. That one had to be an ordering mistake. Paul |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
Adding to the Knafel story, besides Sabres Knafel also reportedly built/delivered 50 of their '70 Tempest 400 Post cars called Magnums!.
Click below... Similar to these were the Calgary Canada Stampede Pontiac's 'poor man's GTO' called the Jury, 1970 Post cars too & reportedly 26 built/delivered.. Lots more dealer specials also 'factory freaks' were built up here in Canada!. Dealer specials like the Conroy Cheetah Beaumonts, Mander Camaros, Mainway Mustangs to name a few, lots more too!. As many here are aware, even our Canadian B-Body Pontiacs were factory built w/ Chevy drivetrains including SB's, W-Motors and Mk1v's too!. Yes factory 409 and L72 B-Body cars wearing Pontiac clothes, not exactly common but built as factory RPO's.. Freaks?. Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
The more unknown the better. I would say unusual colors fit the "factory freak" definition perfectly. That being said, how about the 50 Bengal Chargers?

I believe that the majority of those cars were 318 and 383 powered base models. For even more freakiness, how about a Bengal R/T? |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
I had to look for this one as I wasn't sure if I was remembering it correctly as a Knafel car...but it is/was!.
Much like one of Smokey Yunick's accomplishments, perhaps one of the greatest racing rule bending was Knafel using the Canadian Pontiacs having factory Chevy engines thing to legally run this probable L72 Acadian!. ~ Pete Info/Pic below lifted from a previous thread here; <span style="font-style: italic">...The Knafel Acadian ran in the NASCAR Ultra/Stock drag racing class where the rules stated that the car and engine had to be of the same make. Knafel decided to go with the Canadian Acadian so they could run a very competitive 427 engine and still be considered a Pontiac. Because the Acadian used a Chevy drivetrain, this was considered legal by NASCAR. I don't believe NHRA ever did recognize any of the Canadian Pontiacs. The photo below is from a 1967 points meet at Suffolk Raceway and the Chevy wagon in the far lane is Ted Hartman's "Bad Banana"...</span> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...oc20dixon1.jpg |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Freaks
WOW!!!! I wonder what ever became of that car?
|
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Fre
It was my understanding that none of the big Canadian Ponchos were available with the L72 - true? Kinda like the L78 for the Beaumonts.

This, to me, is freakier than anything posted so far!

Years ago, when MCR first started running the rotting musclecar of the month column, wasn't one of the first cars featured an L72 Canadian Pontiac that was rotted into the ground? A 68 or 69? |
Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Fre
That was a '69 2+2, I think, and it was a 427 car. I know the car was famous around the Net . . . . can't find it, though. I would think it was a 390 hp version.

</div></div> You're probably right. I have the issue buried somewhere around here, I'll have to see if I can find it. And now, how about the Randall 401XR Gremlin: http://www.gremlinx.com/index.php?op...amp;Itemid=152 |

1972 Pontiac Lemans with a ducktail spoiler. Rumored 2 were built, extra spoilers were dumped into the parts bins.

Re: Musclecar Dealers & Low Production Factory Fre
great thread!! Love reading about these odd cars.. One burning question to me though. That blue 70 stripeless Judge. Why didn't the original owner just order a Ram air GTO and install a spoiler? Would have been cheaper to do..

Good question! The original owner (according to Diego's article) is a woman now in her 80's, I would imagine that she really wanted a Judge, didn't like the stripes, but wanted the wing and the Judge stickers. A Judge is nothing more than a Ram Air GTO with stickers and a wing, so yes, she could have ordered a Ram Air GTO and had them install a wing at the dealership. But I'd be curious what the dealer would have charged for a wing back then, and the labor to paint it and install it. It may have been cheaper to get the Judge sans stripes. Not exactly a factory freak, but something you don't see too often. 1968 Firebird 400 RHD. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...0rhd%20(1).jpg |
