Besides including the 311 L89 cars I believe the 4889 # also includes both 9560 and 9561 Copo Camaro production too!.

Like L89's, Copo Camaros were RPO L78 cars first before 9560 & 9561 was added to the order thus why the RPO L78 by vehicle # of 4889 is higher than the grand total of Tonawanda engine production totals by Suffix for L78 and L89 added together even w/ their totals including service engines too!.

L89 was not an optional engine; it was an aluminum cylinder head option requiring the L78 engine. Both L78 and L89 options appear on factory documents for these cars. It is my opinion the L78 total includes those built with L89.

Conversely L78 does not appear on factory documents for COPO cars; it was not required to order one. I have no idea why they would be included in the L78 total.

What is the prevailing thought on the 311 L89 number as in relation to 311 Camaros, or a combined 311 Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas? Don't start on the Novas. Just asking on individual models, or all inclusive.

If I'm wrong I'm fine w/ it but here's how I'm seeing it..

If the 4889 # represents '69 model year F-Bodies shipped w/ RPO L78, I'm in total agreement it includes those built with L89!.

As for the the 9560/9561 part, GM Canada Vintage services paperwork prepared from microfilm for '69 Copo cars by Vin also indicates L78 like the L89 equipped cars do!.
I have a copy of one of the Canadian Vintage services sheet for a Copo car that clearly shows RPO L78 also 9561 as shipped w/ the car..

Fran P and I discussed this 15/20 years ago and expected this may be why Tonawanda engine production by Suffix totals for 1969 L78 and L89's weren't enough to supply the total of 1969 F/X cars ordered w/ RPO L78/L89 but never did get the #'s all together and do the math like we'd hoped to..

As far as the L89 # 311 goes, does this represent F-Bodies shipped w/ RPO L89 or a Tonawanda engine production by Suffix quantity?.
If it's a Vehicle RPO # and the 4889 is too, the 311 can be subtracted from the 4889..
But if the 311 is a Tonawanda engine production Suffix # it would include service engines built also could include X-cars if there were any?.

Anyone here have the '69 Tonawanda engine production by Suffix totals for L78 and L89 F/X cars?.
If L78/L89 F/X engine production wasn't enough to supply the RPO's ordered, if we can get all the #'s together lets do the math and see if the 9560/9561 thing is actually possible or not?.

It has been talked about B4. It always puzzeled me that both Camaro and Chevelle use that 311 #. My guess is the 311 came from Tanwanda records, and maybe it was 311 total engines shipped. Think about it, how many real L89 Chevelles have you ever seen ?

Re: L78 Anybody know how many were built?

Mike, I can't say that I ever saw an L89 Chevelle back in the day. There was a chevelle with al heads in the next town over, that I thought was factory, but in the last couple of years found that it was sold out of St Louis, and might have been an L88 transplant. A reach could have made it a Dick Harrell conversion.
One L89 Camaro in this area sold new from Lujack Schierbrock in Davenport. No Novas.
I tend to think the 311 is for all models. I would think perhaps Corvettes too?

For our Chevelle, I have a copy of the page from the shipping list with the information on our car. GM Oshawa has the information on microfilm and is where they get the info to document the Canadian cars. Our paperwork clearly shows the L78 option then the 9566AA.

Re: L78 Anybody know how many were built?

Ken, I do not think the L89 Vettes fall into the 311. All of the publications I have seen for L89 Vettes in 1969 show 390 Corvettes produced with that option.

Cool info Keith and I think you understand exactly what I'm trying to get at!.
Being the Canadian records are the most detailed internal as shipped info available also how it appears both Canadian F & A-Body Copos included L78 before deletions/additions to include Copo packages, lets try and get any and all 1969 F/X and A-Body RPO #'s also relevant Tonawanda shipped by Suffix #'s together here and do some math!.

Re: L78 Anybody know how many were built?

In looking at the reference I have for the 69 L-89 production, I see the numbers of 311 Camaro, 390 Corvette, & 400 Chevelle.

Just wondering if anyone has numbers from Fran Preves records as too how many L-89 motors were produced at Tonawanda for the 69 model year?
