Fired up NOS MO 302 for the first time!!
Fired up my NOS Smokey MO 302 the first time today after 44 years!! It fired first try !!! I need to change the wires and put some points in her tomorrow..although new, the points were all oxidized..we just sanded them up in order to start the motor..and the plug wires are almost brittle from being so dry and old...I will replace tomorrow and fine tune the carb, timing , etc.
I cannot wait for them 7k rpm shifts!!! A little sad because it is no longer an NOS motor...just another used 67 Z motor!! haha ..Can I post a short video here?? or do I need to post a link to youtube?? |
Re: Fired up NOS MO 302 for the first time!!

awesomee....thanks jannes..I hope this works.
Boy was I happy when she purred....I was very nervous since I have not taken the motor apart. I guess I trusted the mechanic!! haha |
Re: Fired up NOS MO 302 for the first time!!
Here is another from the exhaust end...soon afterward. Ever since this motor was purchased from the Smokey Yunick Auction, I have only changed the oil, plugs, points, cap and rotor..and I preoiled the motor and had the carb rebuilt. I did take the intake off, just to take a look. It looked so pristine and new so I did not pull the oil pan. Needless to say, I was nervous about starting it after all these years. With just slight adjustments of the dwell, timing and very slight carb adjustment she seems to run great. Cannot wait to get the car together now!!!
The clips are not too long, but hope You enjoy. I will take a vid when I put the headers on also !! Cannot wait for that !! |

Mike

Well, a few things about the motor that i do know. First, I did infact pull the oil pan at one point and took some pics. I had a brainfreeze I guess earlier. Now that I looked at the old pics I took, I have a better memory. haha I am no mechanic, but I believe that most of the parts of the motor are new NOS, but some are obviously not original. For example it has a 69 intake and distributor on the motor...but the block, heads, carb, exhaust, etc. are all numbered and dated correctly.. It has 1965 dated NOS plug wires..?? There definitely are some mismatched bolts, etc. used. I suspect Smokey added the parts he was missing to mostly complete NOS motor. The inside still has all the paint dabs on the crank and oil pump pickup, etc. The heads look absolutely virgin. It even has yellow '302' painted on the side of the block under the orange paint when I cleaned the block with a rag and thinner before I repainted it. I have not touched or adjusted the crank bolts, rod bolts, head bolts, valves, rockers, etc. I just took a look and took a bunch of pics. I do not know the full story behind exactly what Smokey did with the motors that were sold at his auction. Unfortunately he died before he actually had the auction. I heard that he rebuilt all his motors before tha auction..whether New or used. I do have all the smokey docs. and spec sheet that came with the motor. The letter of authenticity in my name is actually from his wife if I recall. they actually held the auction without him there. But, it seems all stock specs. according to the papers. I can post a copy of the papers if anyone is interested. I also took a 'bunch' of pics of details of the inside and outside of the motor before I detailed it if anyone is interested, but I dont want to bore anyone. haha |
