2013 GT500 most powerful OEM v8 in the WORLD

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Debuts As Most Powerful Production V8 in the World with 650 Horsepower, Top Speed of 200+ MPH

New Ford Shelby GT500 is powered by an aluminum 5.8-liter supercharged V8 producing 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 engine in the world
Nearly every vehicle system has been optimized including powertrain, brakes, gearing and suspension
New Shelby GT500 sets a performance-driven design standard with new downforce- generating front grilles, aggressive splitter, new quad exhaust system and two new forged-aluminum wheels
Also new for 2013 is an optional Performance Package with SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and a Torsen limited-slip differential. The offering can be coupled with a track package for all-out racetrack performance

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15, 2011 – The ultimate Ford Mustang – Shelby GT500 – raises the bar high on performance with the introduction of the new 2013 model that goes on sale next year delivering 650 horsepower and a top speed of more than 200 mph.

“SVT keeps the Shelby GT500 on the cutting edge of technology and takes muscle car performance to new heights,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development. “We encapsulated every aspect of performance in this car – whether it’s 0-60, top speed, racetrack or quarter-mile times. Beyond that, the daily driver also will find this car perfectly fits his or her needs.”

The 5.8-liter V8 aluminum-block engine produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world. The 3,850-pound car also stays exempt from the gas-guzzler tax.

Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

A larger, more-efficient supercharger flowing more air through the engine is key to helping produce the massive 650 horsepower. The new TVS series 2300 creates 2.3 liters of displacement and is a unique design to the 5.8-liter engine.

The entire cooling system has been significantly updated on the new 5.8-liter engine. It now includes a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, a more efficient charge air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and an intercooler heat exchanger with volume increased 36 percent.

Revised gearing
Nearly every gear on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 was revised to manage the torque and use more of the power in a way that makes it more driver-friendly. Engineers considered more than 35 gearing combinations, finally deciding on one that delivers less torque all the way through the wheels to the ground and still enables the car to achieve fuel economy targets.

A key piece of the driveline, the six-speed manual transmission, offers upgraded gears, bearings and housing so it can properly manage the torque. The final drive ratio is now 3.31:1 for optimized overall vehicle gearing to complement the massive torque. Every gear besides fourth was optimized for competing performance metrics. The clutch has increased torque and rpm capacity and uses a dual-disc design.

“It might just seem like we’re putting a bigger engine into the car. But it’s been a balanced approach through and through,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “We’ve completely redone the car to be even more sophisticated in terms of handling and control than the prior model.”

Other keys for improved traction management include:

Torsen limited-slip differential:When customers order the optional Performance Package, they will get a Torsen limited-slip differential that helps the rear suspension deliver maximum torque and traction better and longer under track conditions
Launch control: A new launch control system lets drivers set the desired launch rpm depending on tire temperature, street surface or other conditions. Unique to SVT’s launch control is that it is integrated with both the engine control and traction control
Brembo braking system: A new Brembo brake system offers drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control, both on the road and the track. New six-piston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors help improve brake fade. New brake pads that are more aggressive also help the car achieve high deceleration and further robustness for more driver confidence

Aero advancements
Significant aerodynamic work was done on the new Shelby GT500 to ensure the car has proper downforce for optimum performance at all speeds. Engineers were able to determine how to harness the air that was moving around and through the car to improve the cooling system, maximize downforce and minimize drag.

The front fascia and splitters were modified to handle the extreme loads at 200 mph, resulting in a car that tracks more securely and feels more planted to the road at higher speeds. It offers 33 percent more effective aero loading at 160 mph compared to the 2011 model.

Superior ride
The new Shelby GT500’s driving dynamics have been improved, now working in concert with all the new content on the car.

Handling, all AdvanceTrac settings and steering assist levels within selectable steering have been tuned to account for the updated content. The previously available unique traction control system and electronic stability control settings help drivers achieve maximum performance on both the street and the track.

Both systems can be completely disabled in controlled track situations where maximum driver skill is utilized, or fully engaged for maximum safety during normal driving or in less-than-ideal traction conditions. Intermediate sport mode allows drivers to push their cars hard at the track without completely disabling the safety systems, permitting more aggressive driving before the traction control and electronic stability control intervene.

“We took a completely different approach with this car so drivers can choose their settings instead of a computer making the selection,” Hameedi said. “Nearly every system the driver interacts with can be tailored to his or her situation including the Bilstein electronic adjustable suspension, launch control, AdvanceTrac and steering assist levels.”

The 2013 Shelby GT500 offers two new sets of forged-aluminum wheels including a unique wheel for cars with the optional packages. The 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are coupled with Goodyear Eagle® F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires on all vehicle configurations.

Taking it one step further
Sometimes Ford Shelby GT500 customers want to enjoy their car on surface streets. Other times they just want to let loose on the track. Two new optional packages on the 2013 model give them the choice.

Available as part of the optional Performance Package, SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers are accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button. Normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities. Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering and pitch under braking. The Torsen limited-slip differential also comes with the Performance Package.

“The adjustable shocks let us develop our car on the track without any compromise,” said Kerry Baldori, Ford SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “Before, we had to tune the car with street implications in mind. Now we can go as extreme as we want on the track setting and still offer the customer a comfortable ride on the road.”

Enthusiasts can upgrade their Performance Package with an additional Track Package for all-out performance. The option comes with an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler for further durability. The coolers play an essential role in preventing crucial components from overheating under high-speed conditions.

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

Is that 5.8 a poked 5.4 Mod, or is it based on one of the new engines? Nothing I've read has explained that yet.

Nice to see that the GT 500 Shelby continues to be the king of muscle cars from 2007 till now. <span style="color: #000099">(The Corvette does not count as a muscle car as it is a Sports Car)</span> I am so glad i chose to buy a new 2007 Shelby when i did,
The Challenger is a good looking car but falls short in Horsepower and The Camaro just does nothing for me in looks! So i still like the Shelby GT 500 the best.

why does svt make the shelby instead of the real man in vegas? My opinion is it is not a real shelby, kind of like the 69-70 shelby mustang.

Yes, High School WAS a long time ago. I agree the Shelby is a beautiful car but being a Ford : &quot;Sometime in your ownership you WILL have the heads off it&quot; probably because the seats fell out of them or the head gaskets leak. I am sure there will be a long line of people willing to pay $5/10,000 over list for the first ones off the line. I admit the car is very cool looking.

Having always been a GM man, I bought my first Ford in a long time when we got an '08 Navigator.

So far, not real impressed with their interior materials quality, mechanicals (bad fuel pump at 50k miles, bad motor in the running board at 45k miles, bizarre transmission shifts, etc.), and body fit on a vehicle that originally cost $60k?

I sure hope the 'Stangs are built better...

The Mustangs have the highest quality of any new pony car according to all the info I see.. I have one.. Its well built, fast, gets great mileage, handles/stops great.. I was a GM guy for 45+ years..

BTW- the 5.4 Shelby motors can take 750 hp with ease. No internal work to achieve those hp levels.

I'm not sure I could argue any one of the pony cars had any real measurable quality over the other.
Pretty sure there are/were some serious issues with manual transmissions on the regular 5.0 cars. My point is that they are all far from perfect.

I've never had those issues with a Ford, Cleveland, Windsor, Modular or otherwise. At least no more so than I've had with Chevrolets or Mopars.

Just spent the past two years hitting a 190,000 original mile, untouched 85 Mustang GT with a 150 shot every weekend with zero issues. Sold it this fall and the new owner is doing the same thing. And that's far from the first time I've pumped enough nitrous through a stock, high mileage small block Ford to send it into orbit with no negative results.

I'm not sure where you get the &quot;you WILL have the heads off&quot; thing from, but 20 years of extensive experience with late model Ford V-8s tells me you've been misinformed.

They are all good cars some just have brand preferences. In the past Ford, GM amd Mopar all had their issues from time to time. The American automobile has come a long way. I will take one of each please. I drive Ford and Cat gave me a Chev truck..good truck zero issues. The competition is good keeps these manufacturers on their toes for our business. Lets just all hope the government does not put an end to these seriously high HP cars or start to taxes the crap out of them to keep them out of the hands of many. They are a good value when you consider the cost to add HP in the 60's yet retain reliability

I'm thinking of buying a 13 Mustang GT... it's no GT500 but I like the GT just fine. I was always a GM person for the most part though I like so many cars from various makers, but this would be my first Ford. I just think it has a timeless look currently and has plenty of hp for me on the street. I just worry about that gearbox.

get the 6 speed automatic then. They are faster then the manual boxes anyway. I have a bud with an auto convertible 3.15 geared 5.0(the worst combo) and he got it to run 12.4 dead nuts stock and bolted on a blower and drag radials(otherwise 100% stock) and it ran 10.6 at Atco this weekend at the Ford vs. Buick race. Still gets 28 mpg on the highway. Amazing

Better be carefull A bone stock 5.0 and he put on a blower?????
The bottom end on the 5.0 WILL NOT take the stress and will let lose
At my buddys shop just the other day. Got in a mustang that some knucklehead hit a bone stock stang with a 5.0 with a 100 shot of nos and the crank just snaped right though the block
One thing is we can agree to disagree about the 5.0 fords
Never liked them never will

Also if you remember back in the 60s when the h/p war was on gm and Chrysler did NOT say what the Real h/p was on the cars back then There was a thing with the insurance companys whould not insure them or hit you in the pocket book
What I do not get is WHY is Ford jumping up and down with these numbers Insurance companys are not going to like this one

Geez, we get it. You don't like Fords. Point made, but you're not going to convince the rest of us. As for the car at your buddy's shop, someone who knows how to tune goes a long way. The stock rotating assemblies aren't the best thing ever, but a competent tuner can fix a lot of problems. There's a reason John Mihovitz at Accufab can hit a 13:1 compression modular with 50+ p.s.i. in a stock block and make it live (at close to 3,000 horsepower).

As for the power rating, what makes you think Ford <span style="font-style: italic">isn't</span> downrating these cars. They've been doing it for years. You don't really think those 87-93 5.0s only made 225 horse at the flywheel, do you? They <span style="font-style: italic">average</span> 200 RWHP, and I've seen a few freaks make close to the full 225 rating at the wheels. Same goes for Terminators, Shelbys, and the new 5.0s. A new Mustang GT is a 450 flywheel car all day, every day.

I'll also add that playing games with the power ratings in the 60s didn't fool anybody, and it won't this time, either. Good Lord, can't we just enjoy it while it does last, instead of wasting time complaining?

Norm, you obviously know little about the 5.0. Its a VERY strong engine and can take 650 hp with stock internals. Easy. Its done all the time. Forged crank, good rods are in there.

Per the article you posted:
&quot;<span style="font-weight: bold">'11 5.0L Four-VALVE DOHC
Base power on the Mustang's new standard V8 is 412 hp and 390 lb-ft at the flywheel. So far Burcham is making 750 hp at the wheels at 8,000 rpm on a stock motor with no problems. Svinicki says the engines have been very durable so far. Others aren't so fortunate.</span>&quot;

Of course, they don't mention who the less fortunate may be. I stand by my earlier statement; a good tuner goes a long way. Burcham is one of the best, as evidenced by the fact that his '11 GT has been mid-9's on a 100% stock long block. If the car in your buddy's shop lost a motor with nothing but a hundred shot, somebody set it up wrong. Period.

Look, a lot of things have changed since the 60's, but some things haven't. One of the things that hasn't is that for every genuinely good tuner/driver, there's a legion ham-fisted, self proclaimed gurus who couldn't change a spark plug without screwing it up. Most performance cars, whether they were built in the 60's, 70's, 80's, or recently, have been owned during at least one point in their existence by someone long on cash and short on skill (or short on both). It's human nature, of course, to blame the machinery, not the operator. And so we end up with stories like &quot;Street Hemis are worthless, plug fouling pigs&quot; and &quot;(Old) 5.0 Mustangs only run 15s&quot;(my personal fave, always good for a laugh), or &quot;Pontiacs don't run, period.&quot; And about 3 dozen other myths that are just that, myths.

Is the rotating assembly in the 412 horse motor ideal? No. I'd love for the thing to come with a nice set of billet JEs swinging from a set of forged BME rods. Not economically feasible. But since, as pointed out above, Burcham's car is laying down 750 RWHP with those junk pistons, maybe they're not as junk as you think. For pete's sake, in 1970 Pro Stockers didn't make 750 at the <span style="font-style: italic">flywheel,</span> and I guarantee not one of those cars had a factory, mass-produced slug in them. Just how much power should these things handle, stone stock, before you consider them a success? Go ahead and list for me all the American cars built over the past 50 years that could lay down 750 to the tire, and run a 9 second quarter, with the untouched stock rotating assembly in them. It'll be a real short list.

Again, we all understand you don't like Fords. What I don't understand is why you insist on bludgeoning the rest of us over the head with it. Legitimate criticism is one thing. Complaining about the way Ford <span style="font-style: italic">rates horsepower,</span> while Chevy is building 638 horsepower Corvettes and 580 horsepower Camaros, just makes it seem like you have some sort of personal vendetta. If Fords get you this worked up, maybe it would be best to just avoid threads discussing them altogether.

</div></div>

Well said. Anybody that has been around Hi Po cars since the 80's, knows all about the 5.0 Mustang. They are the best bang for the buck ever.Blowers. Nitrous and everthing else ( including the kitchen sink ) have been tossed at them. They hold up very well. I've seen over 100,000 mile cars with add on blowers etc. they are truly amazing. Are there any failures, sure from time to time but that happens with any brand.

Fox-body 'Stangs can haul the mail if built properly, but, IMHO, they are butt-ugly compared to a Camaro and/or Firebird of the same vintage, especially the fugly notchbacks.

Again, just my opinion. But, what do you expect on a primarily GM-oriented website?

They haul the mail just fine stock, too.

What do I expect? A pretense of respect, maybe? There's a number of GM products I think are uglier than the entire British Royal Family put together, but I don't make it point to tell their owners that.

Since it's becoming apparent that some people are insulted by the fact that they're even being discussed here, why don't we just put a sign on the front page of the site that says &quot;All cars welcome. Except Fords.&quot;

Just my opinion.
