1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
3 Attachment(s)
Me and another member here (C1SS396) found this car a few years back. I talked to the owner a few times and he said his family was going to do something with it. He called me up today and we made a deal on the car. The owner purchased it brand new in 1971. Its an SC/360 ram air bucket seat automatic on the column car. He said it would run high 14's out of the box and he used to drag race it all the time. Here are some photos of where it currently sits. Only 113 of these cars are still known to exist.

What are your plans for it? Hopefully it gets restored as it deserves it and looks salvagable. Congrats, nice find.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND

This is what i wanted to do with the hornet since we found it .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzCIbhLUUA0 |
Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
So it turns out this is an original Go Pack car (which included four barrel carb, Ram Air induction system,
dual exhausts, handling package, tachometer, Polyglas white letter tires, etc). Options included Shift Command column shift automatic, bucket seats, bumper guards, styled steel wheels. Got the car home today and opened the trunk. Ram air cleaner is still in the trunk along with the factory tach dash. Car was originally Electric Blue Metallic with Serape Blue interior. Engine and transmission are long gone and there is no recovering them. The previous owner let his ex son in law borrow the engine and transmission for his Jeep Wagoneer project in 1985 (when it was last inspected). He and his ex son in law haven't spoken in years so there is no chance any of the original motor or transmission is present. Trunk, floors, and frame rails are super solid. Its just ashame it has sat for so long. -Matt |
Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
I would ask for the contact info for previous owner etc. Cool car.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
I got the car off the original owner. He is sending me the title and anything else he may have from when he purchased it new in 1971.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
Matt; you MUST bring this car as found for our Barn Finds/Hidden Gems display at MCACN, November 17-18!
As you may know...I kinda like AMC's. Congrats on the purchase. Bashton MCACN Managing Member |
Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
Just barely visible on the passenger side quarter window is Atco Class Winner stickers. I talked to the original owner again today. He ordered this brand new in 1971 at Eggy Rambler in Collingswood, NJ. It took 5 weeks to get. He ordered it with manual brakes, manual steering, SC/360, Go Package (which included ram air, tachometer, etc), Shift Command column shift and bucket seats, bumper guards, and Twin Grip rear end. He later added power steering and air conditioning when he could afford it. One of the first things he said he did was change out the Motorcraft 4300 carburetor with a Holley and added traction bars. Thats all for now.

Neat car.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
A guy I worked with bought one new. Said it was a very basic car. The tires rubbed from day 1. Fun going staright but would bottom out pretty easily. I'm sure now you could change a few things around to make it a bit more 2012. At any rate a rare car. Good luck with her

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
Were high 14's the most he got out of it?

I can understand that situation, but now that the car has changed hands, perhaps the ex-son-in-law might be more receptive to talking with you Sure could be worth a try. |

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
cool car will be at MCACN .... never could figure out why AMC put 360 instead of the 401
|
Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
So what ever happened to this car? Do you still own it?
|
Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
After I had to miss the MCACN due to house building scheduling conflicts (still mad), I cleaned it up and sold it to a local AMC enthusiast who has plans of doing something with it.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
Something missing here.I remember stockers running 14.6s and a car with dumps and a tune would go 14.30s.My cousin had a 340Cuda 4 speed and it ran in the same class as the SC360.He would be pissed off if one showed up as they usually beat him.I never knew they were that hard to find.

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
I was just going by what the original owner told me. Things may have gotten fuzzy over the years. This was an automatic car so maybe the 4 speed cars were quicker.

This is probably my favorite AMC product...always liked them. Here is a great little story on the SC/360 Hornet which a couple of Chevrolet legends got to thrash one night... I've read the same story penned a few different ways but for the most part the outcome is the same. This was written by one of my favorite journalists, the late Steve Collison. This was taken from MCR March 1993......Power Shifting 101
Enjoy. BIG |

Re: 1971 Hornet SC/360 Ram Air FOUND
I have a one owner SC360 too, also got it from the original owner. It has 99k miles on it and is one of 19 2 barrel 3 speed cars made. It's in about the same condition as yours but is 100% complete and original with the engine and trans.. It sits in my collection near the Ferrari, Maserati, Yenko, Yenko, Shelby, Saleen, and Petty Street Kit Car
