I am not sure about automatics but I know 350hp 4 speed cars came with smog.

I have seen another one of those the same color at Famoso Drag Strip several times. Special paint code on the tag and owner said the color was original. Claimed it was Mopar Plum Crazy.

You could order a car in any color, even colors from other manufacturers, if you went through channels and paid for it. There have been some very interesting cars found in recent years, thanks to the web, that 20 years ago people would have laughed at and said the owner was making up stories.

1970 W-30 in Plum Crazy
1969 Cutlass in a 1957 Ford color
1972 Trans Am in black

Would be interesting to see the documentation for this Nova. He has the dashes for the paint code, but we would need the paperwork to show it was truly "Plum Purple" (or whatever color it actually is).

I'm pretty sure that by 1970 everything sold in the US, except diesels had mandatory smog equipment.

Mike, tell me about the Cutlass!

FWIW, I don't think the 442 had docs, correct?

Correct, the 70 W-30 had the 'special body order' tag, but nothing mentioned about Plum Crazy. Seemed legit though.

There was also the red 1972 Trans Am (with a column shift) ordered for the president of the SCCA to drive at all their racing events.

This 1969 Cutlass ragtop was special ordered in a 1957 Ford color called Dusk Rose. Check out the build sheet!

I agree Mark! It's a shame that Pontiac decided to just use white/blue or blue/white (American racing colors) through the 1969-1972 years. I've never been a fan of the "one paint scheme" (or perhaps two) motif, I prefer cars with some variety. The problem is with the one (or two) paint schemes on some of the supercars is that once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Pontiac wanted to give a 1972 Trans Am to the president of the SCCA, and since the Pontiac Trans Am was named after the SCCA Trans Am Series, it seemed like a great promotional tool. But the SCCA president declined because the Trans Am was only available in white or blue, and he only drove red cars. Pontiac then made a one-off red Trans Am, and the rest is history.
