I do not know but not all 302s got the 8"Big Thick Balancer. I think a light weight balancer and light weight fly wheel would rev faster.

Re: 302 balancer

on the farm we had a 68 chevy C50 grain truck that had a balancer like that.

The 69's were one year style with the offset timing mark and the extended "Y" shape on the front of the balancer. Don't think service replacement balancers had the assembly line "Y" shape on the front.

Re: 302 balancer

So some 67 but all 68 were like the the L-79 harmonic balancer. Were the so called ce 302 were in early 68 the L-79 or the big 8" harmonic balancer. Any help.

Re: 302 balancer

1966 and 1967 L79 balancer's were like the 67-68 Z/28 balancer's. They look just like the 69 302 balancers but the 69's have the offset timing mark. The 1969 balancer also used a redesigned timing chain cover because of the offset timing mark. The width of a 69 302 assembly line balancer is about 1.75 inches just like the 67 and 68 balancers.

Re: 302 balancer

The 66,67,68,and 69's 302 balancer all look the same and are 8" balancer. So the truck 350 and car 350 are all the same too. So the different cu. in. and the different crankshaft all took the same 8" Harmonic Balancer{except the 400 sbc}.

Re: 302 balancer

350/300 or 350/250 motors are different Paul. They are 8" but much thinner than the L79's, 67-68 302's and the 69 302's. My 69 SS nova is not the same as my 69 Z/28. 8" but thinner.

Re: 302 balancer

The balancer pictured in the first post is a 69 DZ 302 or not. Also only thick 8" 302,327,and 350 balancers is for a large or small journal and 1968 302. Is a 67 a small journal crank and a 69 has a large journal crank, I would think the balancers would match the crank.

Re: 302 balancer

first picture looks like a 283 or 327 balancer. 67 Z's were small journal cranks. Pretty much a 283 crank was used for the 67 Z/28's. 68's and 69's were large journal cranks but all Z/28's 67 thru 69 took the wide 8" balancer. 1969 was the first year for the offset timing mark though.

So you can use a small balancer...

Gotta bolt the fan belt pulley to something.

Re: 302 balancer

Previous owner of the engine changed to the smaller balancer for "more revs" apparently.

Re: 302 balancer

don't think so! maybe it is a 283 crank with bearing spacers? That is the correct "V" at the crank butt.
