1964 Chevelle 327, 340hp
 

I know this has been discussed before....is it rumor, myth or true?

What are the chances of finding one of the rumored High Performance 1964 Chevelles that were supposedly built? There has been a stories running around forever that some small number of solid lifter 327 Chevelles were built in '64. They would have been rated 340 HP I assume with the Vette engine.

Anyone ever seen one, or know of one to exist?

I am not looking to purchase.....looking for the next Display for the 2014 MCACN`s......The 50th Anniversary Showcase.

I've been around Chevy's a bunch of years and this is the first time I have heard about such a car. I have my doubts that any were built.

There's been a long floating rumor of the possible existence of 1964 Chevelles with solid lifter 327/365 engines and I think the block suffix code was even listed in Colvin's book several years back. I've kept an eye out for many, many years and have never even heard of a possible suspect car. In fact, '64 Chevelle 327/300 cars are extremely rare, let alone a 365HP version! I don't have a 1964 Assembly Manual to thumb through but there would be several things specific to a 365 car. Good luck with this one Dan!

I have heard the rumors of '64 Chevelles with the 327/365 hp engine. A friend of mine said a neighbor of his when he lived in Seal Beach, CA in the mid-60s had one but he was only about 7 years old at the time and it could have been somebody's hot rod or a dealer modified car. I have heard that there are some higher than normal redline tachs (6500?) that have occasionally been seen and this may be what has fueled the rumors. Somebody built a &quot;clone&quot; of one of these 365hp cars probably 20+ years ago based around one of those original tachs and I remember saving the article but would have to dig deep to find it now.

Were these 64's to have had 10 or 12 bolt rears?

All 64's would have the 10-bolt. The new for '64 10-bolt for Chevy II/Nova and Chevelle.

Would be great to find some documentation supporting the availability of this engine but I bet if anything found would be an early pipe-dream for a possible option that never came to fruition.

It'd be &quot;very special&quot; if it received a pre-prod 12-bolt which didn't appear until '65.

Well, here's &quot;documentation&quot; that it was to be offered. This is one of TWO page # 44 pages out of an original '64 Finger Tip Facts book I have. The first page doesn't list the 250hp or 300hp 327 either.

Now, having seen that, I also have the Chevrolet documents that show the production of each option in '64. That list does include the 250hp 327 with a note that it entered production in March '64, and the 300hp 327 with a note that it entered production in June '64. There is NO listing for the L76, nor is there a listing for K66 which was supposed to accompany the 365hp option.
Sooooo, even though there is a &quot;listed&quot; L76 option, there is no record of Chevrolet ever producing one in a '64 Chevelle.

----I wasnt raised in Detroit, but since moving here 17 years ago I have heard from several guys that they remember 327/365 64 Chevelles in and around Detroit. Most have felt that they were skunkworks cars being tested by GM. Makes at least some sense. Wonder what Jim Mattison might say about this quandry???......Bill S

i remember the story of a special tach being built pre production...and an NOS went across ebay way back..a guy built a car around the tach..some rag had the story about it

I have heard of the late 1964 chevelle 327/365 engine option for many years and I read about the red clone one built several years ago. The 6500 redline tach that found it's way into some el caminos and other chevelles has been told many times. The one piece of credibility that I have always kept in the back of my mind was the fawn colored 1964 327/365 chevelle advertised in the Hot Rod Magazine classifieds back in about 1965. I am recalling this from memory, but I believe that it was located in Kansas. We had a white one in our area back in the day, but it started out as a 327/250 and had a vette engine transplant. Many GTOs ate the humble pie when they met up with that car.

With V8 being available across all models (Chevelle 300, Malibu, and Malibu SS), it appears time ran out. A handful may have been built at the very end and/or engineering cars survived and sold. Looks to be slim chance for a RPO assembly.

The &quot;high performance&quot; 327 referred to in Paul's TSB was the 300hp, not the L-76. The 300hp was released in June as mentioned.

Total production of the 250hp 327 (L-30)was 6598. The 300hp (L-74) was 1737. (all domestic, no export)

So with both 300 &amp; 365 being referenced as High Perf and a singular June engine reference release confirmed, the L76 appears to be left on the vine... but it could have fell through the cracks and not be captured on these production totals. -like the Chevy II/Nova L77.

What books is showing this bulletin, and what's the L77?

FWIW, the AMA Specs sheet shows the 327/365, but that doesn't mean any were built. If it wasn't listed, then I think it would be safer to assume it was not produced, period.

L77 is the 220HP 4brl 283. Yes, &quot;safe&quot; to assume that as the L74 300HP was finally approved, the L76 was not and removed from material reference. AMA ref is early as well.
