Crager SS wheels

Can someone educate me about the Crager SS wheels. My friend has some on his el camino and I cant tell if they are the old ones or the new style ones. How can you tell?

Re: Crager SS wheels

Those are the old style. The spokes have round look (that's what I call it) the Jegs- Summit wheels sold today the spoke has a flatter look to it.

Re: Crager SS wheels

The cap is somewhat newer as it has the "R" for registered and the older ones didn't. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct on the "R" as the newer style. The lug holes are straight and the newer style are "Uni-lug" I'm sure there is more but they look good.

Re: Crager SS wheels

Uni-lug have been around for a long time. The rounder spokes is the key. Plus many are dated on the inside bead area.

I thought the earlier versions were painted in the lug areas?

Maybe bad Chrome in the centers but always liked that look.

Straight lug holes, no "R" on cap, and no paint on lug area are the earliest,I have found.

Re: Crager SS wheels

I believe the aluminum lug area is correct for the vintage Cragars. Early ones that I have seen had the painted center section aluminum color.

Re: Crager SS wheels

Crager did make Aluminum Center Sectoins ones. But not painted center section.

Re: Crager SS wheels

I think that is what they mean Paul. Aluminum centers which are not chrome. They sometimes look painted aluminum color.

Re: Crager SS wheels

The ones with all chrome were the Super Sport mags. The ones with the alimunim centers were called Sport mags, like the ones on the slicks I just sold.

Re: Crager SS wheels

All Cragars had the lug nut pocket area painted aluminum color until the early 80's..Krylon made an exact color match for a while but not sure if it is still available.

Whitetop, do you recognize these wheels. They had a unique Crager center cap on them and I am pretty sure they did not have the "R" on them. They were mostly aluminum. Unfortunately I let them go when I moved to Illinois and am now thinking that might have been a mistake.

Here's a nice early set of GM pattern Cragar's I picked up. 15x10" and 15x6". No trademark caps.

Cragar, like many wheel/parts companies back then, copied the American Racing five-spoke. Probably what you have there.

Thanks Tony. Are they (or were they since I sold them with the car) worth anything?

scuncio 04-28-2014 02:27 AM

Re: Crager SS wheels

The 15s are worth around $100 per wheel in nice shape. The 14s not so much....

Bummer. Thanks Tony.

Re: Crager SS wheels

I may differ in opinion from Scuncio on the 14" not being worth much. Not because I have some, but many Day 2 cars used 14" back in the good ol' days because that is what size tires were on quite a few new cars. I have a set of 14" Cragars with F-70 and L-60 RWL bias Goodyears that are like new. I also just bought a set of NOS 14" Cragar SS from Don and got 7:50x14 Firestones for the front and had M&H make me a set of 8:50x14 cheaters. They look awesome!!!
