That car was found several years ago. In fact I think it was at auction somewhere last year.

Looked at a local original owner blue 86 Iroc with 9k original miles never out in the winter/rain..the only problem is the blue paint is starting to lift in areas-GM paint problem of the day.

I went with a new '87 LX 5.0 for almost half the money (10K less, I think) and 225hp. Traded it on a black/black '90 LX which I modified and made into a real canyon-carver--that looked stock. 14K for the '87 new and today a new GT is almost 50.

Re: 4.3 mile '85 Iroc Camaro Found In Trailer

and to think all the experts, auctions ,magazines keep saying invest in high grade muscle cars, muscle cars appreciate in value...buy, buy, invest , invest.... ..
the reality is the values of most nice muscle cars barely keep up with new car inflation and 'there inflated' prices.

seems as only the true super cars or extremely rare, fresh high end restos (reproduction parts built, too) are actual Investment grade......
we love it though. ...Dealers love us for it or they wouldn't have nice cars to auction off to the investment vultures....

example: your car you built (restored) in 1990 for $25,000 was worth $30-$35,000 and today to build (restore) the same car, the same way , assuming mostly NOS stuff...the cost is 5 -10 times just in parts (nos) today and the cars are only worth 3-5 times those values........what gives ?

By the way..this IROC above is now the Benchmark for condition, pedigree, history, value .etc.. .. until a 88 350 TPI G92 T tops comes along with similar provenance......or a 1LE some famous race team moth balled.....

Nice car, nice history but what do you do with it? can't even take it to church on Sunday. Can't even make it a lawn ornament.

I ordered an '86 and had to go with the carbureted version as I wanted a 5-speed, which was not available with the TPI engine.

Why not? It sold for 27K. If it was the car you really wanted to drive around, that's not too bad.

Jason, Two points we are chattering ,ranting about.
Invest in a Brand new 85 IROC in the wrapper or Buy it to drive as a Used Classic.
#1 its a great car that I would not drive "too much"... common sense
#2 Once you unwrap it and put
600- 1,000 miles on it ... ...
You devalued the car. $8,000-$10,000
or more. And the aura of "the best"

Each and everyone of us is concerned about the Cash Value of their Car.
We all comment on it in the Cars for Sale forum when others offer them For SALE.

Collect it, Own it for what it is...OR
Look for Another example to BUY and Drive and have "car" fun with it...jmho

If I owned it, I would only drive it a few miles here and there.... and drive the
HELL out of one just like it that I paid 1/2 or Less for

My friend had a '85 IROC (Silver with dark gray trim) think it was carb w/automatic tranny. Car was fast as hell but handled like sh*t in bad weather. Would fishtail on wet pavement if your were going too fast. Couldn't drive it in the snow. Isn't this black IROC missing the front spoiler lip? I thought there was a piece that went at the bottom. My friend had one on his car and it would always rub/scrape when pulling in and out of his driveway

Re: 4.3 mile '85 Iroc Camaro Found In Trailer

The spoiler lip is missing because it was never installed at the dealership as part of the delivery prep process. The spoiler is with the car; just not installed.

That would have been a 16-second car, stock. Not quite "fast as hell"...TPI went better though.

True enough - the TPI cars were much better but still got smoked by the 5 liter Mustangs and GN's. That time period was when my brother and I were in our mid teens and spent a fair amount of time at the track with our Dad seeing what these cars actually ran. Many consider that time the beginning of the re-emergence of the horsepower wars that continue today. Most kids back then really had no clue as to what a "fast" car was. In the late 80's if you had a mid to high 13 second car that was pretty fast - nowadays that is nothing. Fun times though.

I've seen seen more cars in the wrapper from the 80's and 90's that the novelty has worn off for me. Kinda reminds me of this skit.

Re: 4.3 mile '85 Iroc Camaro Found In Trailer

I think my recollection is a bit different. Though the TPI was one of the sexiest looking setups, they ran out of breath quickly with anything better than stock heads. Correcting it was expensive and at the time there were very few reliable tuners. I think there were plenty of carbed guys who were satisfied with their performance.

Fast67VelleN2O 12-11-2014 04:31 PM

Re: 4.3 mile '85 Iroc Camaro Found In Trailer

Accel was the guys to turn to when it came to TPI performance. They had a better flowing intake, runners, computer and wiring setup as well as their own upper plenum called the Super Ram. Really woke up the TPI engines.

Yes I was.
The car was fun to drive, unless the roads were damp, and work was actually paying for it as I got a car allowance and mileage.
I really wanted the 350 version when it came out.

I thought they wouldn't sell any Irocs with a 350 5 speed. 350 auto yes.

350 auto in 87, 305 TPI 5-speed in 87 too

no "factory" built 350 manuals although I DID drive a stripper "proving grounds" built 350-5speed down to an event in Florida in early 87, it was a test mule for the 1LE package ...

Re: 4.3 mile '85 Iroc Camaro Found In Trailer

I've always been a fan of these cars as well.

This was my college ride. It began life as a 91 RS 305 5 speed convertible. I found a low mileage 91 1LE TPI 350 t top car and robbed the engine, wiring, and rearend from it. You couldn't get a 350 with a 5 speed. You could also not get a 350 with a convertible. I ended up with a 5.7 TPI 5 speed convertible. The car was a blast and got me into a bit of trouble driving through Volcano National Park from the Hilo side of the Big Island to Kona. I had a Paxton supercharger ready to bolt on it but I sobered up after the brush with the Federal cops in a National Park.

I had the cousin a 1985 trans am 305 700r4 Carb 190hp the tpi was 205. My first new car. I cannot remember what it ran in the 1/4 but in the 1/8 my best time was a 9.74 against a 85 mustang l had him by 1/2 a car length. It pulled real good until I went to 3rd (which was just before the finish line) and it would just die. The mustang would have beat me by a couple car lengths in a 1/4 mile. Good times

Stock L69 5-speed F body will run high 14s with a decent driver. 85 5.0 5-speed Mustang will run mid- to low-14s @ around 95 mph, again assuming a decent driver.

It still had factory markings on the window, door mirror etc...Does that mean it was never dealer prepped? And only having 4 miles on it the IROC must have been trailered to the container or the dealer was just around the corner.

So back in '85 I ordered a new bright blue IROC Z with the 5 speed. It took 6 months to get (because of the color) and I got it in January of '86. On the third day of my ownership, I took it to Lake Tahoe to my sisters wedding (ya, Elvis was there) and it got hit on the drivers side in the snowy parking lot.
Couldn't open the drivers door and got gastly looks on the drive home... Sold it shortly after because even though it was repaired, every time I looked at it I visualized the damage.

It would do low 14's at Sears point but my '86 Monte Carlo SS could do low 13's.

No comments on the tan corduroys please....it was a formal wedding ya know. Charlie
