The Plymouth Hemi Cuda signified the end of an era. It was the last of the fire-breathing monsters, born as the curtain fell over a decade of American muscle and big block V-8s –– a glorious time we won’t ever get back. Only for one buyer at Mecum Auctions’ sale in Indianapolis May 12-17, that era can be re-lived in the form of this pristine 1970 Hemi Cuda, boasting just 81 original miles. I've had the impression that the write-up for this auction isn't telling the truth on the whole car - it's stock, but not original.

----Part of the truth would be the high 10 second ET range. That was record breaking territory for SS/DA cars back then. By their own description this Cuda had nowhere near the mods needed (sheet metal, etc.) to get down into that rareafied ET area. Ill believe the car did ETs in that zone when I see a guaranteed time slip.....Bill S

You're right. Which is why I don't believe all that nice red sheet metal in the trunk of the 2005 pics is anywhere near original. 10 sec. SS/DA car? It was chopped. |

I think I looked at this car a decade or more ago at legendary motor car LMC but it had 43 miles at that time.......same car?

IMHO the engine appears to have been painted... It may not have many miles on it however it has way more hours running in than 61 miles of road driving would indicate...
After studying side by side with Dave's 18k mile car the engine compartment in 81 mile looks significantly different especially with regard to the washer hose routing and cables, spark plug wires etc. DAVES CAR BELOW FOR COMPARISON https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...%252520305.jpg |

Of course its going to be quite different . .
The 81 mile car was Modified to Drag Race... Removal of Intake, Carbs, Distributor, Exhaust manifolds . Etc. Etc. The Engine was probably pulled to do the Mods. especially adding Headers.,Scatter shield, Blow proof Steel Flywheel and Performance Clutch and Pressure plate.. All of which were SAFETY REQUIRED BY ALL SANCTIONED BODIES AND NO WAY ... WAS THAT CAR EVER IN THE 10's They were Stones on the Drag Strips back then ! Referred to as Slow Dumb Elephants and Dawgs that couldn't get out of there own way .... The Only Hemi Cars that Ran well were Highly modified, well funded by Extremely talented owners, teams or co ops The Semi Professional and Professional Teams funded, sourced through and supported via MOPAR or CHRYSLER with High Quantities of Parts and Cash. Buddie Martin of SOX & MARTIN FAME Summed it up this Way.......without out the influx of endless parts we could have never competed with Hemi Engines......They ate up everything to make them fast...and they didn't last long We had tested the 440's and they stayed together with less parts, time and expense and ran darn close to our Hemi's .........Chrysler wanted HEMI DOMINANCE and RECORDS. EXPOSURE and. MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS SELLING LIKE HOT CAKES. Most any true Mopar racer of the period will concure ...... As they ran from the nightmare of racing one to .....the BB 440's and such. . I can't wait to hear and see the comments on this ......... |

That car could have way more miles on it then advertised. I know a few people who removed the speedo cables 'back in the day' to keep miles down so they would get me when they sold it. Could have very well happened here.

Depends on when the car was built Brian. Chrysler stopped blacking out the cowls the last few months of the 70 model year......and continued that practice on the 71's.
