Re: 409 Corvair
my roommate at college had a 12 second 396 corvair he raced at gainesville in the early 80's..always had a thing for them since then..actually owned a corsa vert for a few days then sold it... (rustiest car I ever owned)..

Re: 409 Corvair
That is one sexy Corvair. I've always wanted to see a 09 in a 64 Chevelle done in the same fashion. I'd say this trumpfs that! Well done.

Re: 409 Corvair
WOW!!!!
If that's hooked to the stock transaxle, I hope you aren't planning any holeshots |

Re: 409 Corvair
It is nice to know there is someone as stupid as me out there. What a great car.
|
Re: 409 Corvair
That is cool!! It must be fun pulling up next to some unsuspecting driver and watching him/her break their necks trying to figure out where the rumbling is coming from, only to catch the Corvair from the corner of their eye, leave 'em in a pile of smoke!! Fun!!

Re: 409 Corvair
very nice.... How does the transaxle work? It going to end way in front of the rear axle area..
|
Re: 409 Corvair
Wow! Beautiful cars and done just right. Now you just need a Coupe.

Re: 409 Corvair
How's the 409 handle with that front to rear weight disparity.....
A friend has a Monza with a. 302 in it & another friend of Dad's (now deceased) built a VW bug with a L88 in it.... a car he started around '69 . Those 'Vairs are really put together .....nice ! |
Re: 409 Corvair
The 327" Corvair handles really well,as good as a stock Corvair, (engine has aluminum heads). The 409" Corvair (also with aluminum heads) you need to be more careful driving it but it's OK as well. They will never be race cars but there fun to drive. Both use modified Corvair transaxles which so far have held up with careful use, thanks

Re: 409 Corvair
Both these cars would look cool at MCACN.
|
Re: 409 Corvair
----Marv,,,Not only are you apparently very handy, but you seem to have a great sense of humor!!! Love both cars, and would also like a bit of info on the rest of the drivetrain beyond the engines......Bill S

Re: 409 Corvair
Thanks Bill ,as you may know all Corvair diffs come from the factory with only 2 spider gears stock , both cars have been upgraded to 4 spiders and also in place of the stock sheet metal inspection cover a custom 1/4" steel plate cover has been made and installed. Other then careful deburring of the diff parts and some shot peening of parts the diffs are stock . They don't appear to be very strong but they hold up quite well if not abused.I also use synthetic gear lube.

Re: 409 Corvair
Yeah...this is some really cool stuff. Nice ,sanitary installs too !
|
Re: 409 Corvair
Actually Belair you would look perfect driving one.

Re: 409 Corvair

Re: 409 Corvair
Where I grew up in the Orange County area of So Cal in the early to mid 70's, there were a fair number of these conversions running around. One of the families who's kids attended my high school owned Crown (sp?) Manufacturing, who built conversion kits for all sorts of makes of cars, and they would show up with all kinds of strange conversions. I seem to remember a Porsche 912 with a Corvair in the back that ran pretty well.
Another buddy had a Corvair with the Crown conversion and the engine was located in the back seat making for a nice mid-engine setup, but the back seat was gone and the engine cover wasn't the best noise/heat insulation (but made it sort of stealthy). And the transaxle was still the weakest link, so you had to roll on the throttle, but he sure surprised a lot of people with that car. |
