a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
How's this for a Day 2 Car ..! ?
Original owner 2nd from the left, Sammy Schuler with in the first week of ownership "took it apart" to Chrome Everything that would unbolt. Then Added a Race Prepped 427 L88 style BB with a Doug Nash 4 speed. Ran 11's with only minor suspension mods unlike a true SS /Stock class car of its time. Always "Street able" was the tune. A gorgeous Original Paint Car sporting 1,976 Original Miles ! The young fella too the left is Ray Schuller, Samny's son who is the caretaker now has kept this Day 2 car going strong. Pictured also is my Dad Joe and Doug Bennadetti ,whom all have been lifelong friends. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_211000.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_211024.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_202654.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_202545.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_202518.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_203546.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_203559.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_205237.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...722_210949.jpg |

As much as I love that car, the billet pulleys and braided hose wrap make me want to cry a little.

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
The stance and wheel and tire size and selection is so perfect on this car. It belongs in the 'stance' thread.
Sammy is a good guy - hope they keep it in the family for many years to come. |
Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
That car will never leave the family unless there's no family in the 3rd or 4th gen to carry the torch. ..
.Uncles and Cousins do exist within the hierarchy though. I know some years ago. A lot of years ago. Six figure offers,,: well into the six figures were politely passed over . ... Just saying. |

A few hours and a six pack can fix that! |

There were 4 special paint orange Chevelles two hardtops and two convertibles there that day. He choose the hardtop. Car sported a tunnel ram at Pittsburgh that weekend....BKH |

Helmut ...
That car is by far so understated by my lousy pics that most who read this thread can't fathom how incredible the Original Paint, Lettering, Chrome and Day 2 High Gloss Black paint is underneath and under hood. Guys, I didn't have the heart or gall to mention the New billet stuff and other items were outta place. .... This car has only been refreshened with modern pieces in the last few years... some stuff that resides in the garage/ attic : steel hood with Grumpy style tall tunnel ram box molded onto it.. 200 pounds he said it felt like. Polished then Chromed Weiand Tunnel Ram.matching linkage. ..Chromed carbs..Jones/STAHL/Moroso Tach & SW Gauge clusters. ..Ram Rod /Super Shifter assembly. Traction Bars, Tow Tabs & Tow Bar with Towing hubs. M-H & Stahls. Stahl headers. Lakewood Loop Roll Bar (never installed) . .All bought by the Original Owner & Modified.... and Raced both on the track and Street. These guys are close dear friends..... if I ask...I may be able to photograph this stuff in sight of the Car. And have good enough proofs for anybody to have blown up for 8x11 or bigger....... 2 generations of performance minded add ons. The Cool thing is the younger Ray, Goes fast on weekends in a 4 second Pro Mod . |
Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
That car is SWEET! I especially dig the tunnel ram with velocity stacks on the carbs

Have they run it down the 1/4 with the new parts? |

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
I know sam and family quite well as I build the engines for his drag racing back in the day.

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
Funny how my tastes are shifting to Day 2 mods after years of loving all original cars. I think this is really a beautiful car.

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
Tom - to your point, I always scratch my head at all the restored cars running dog dish caps. While I do like the look, I suspect that almost every original owner that didn't opt for rally wheels or some optional wheel cover had plans to ditch those caps the minute the car left the dealership. They probably already had the aftermarket wheels purchased before they signed the papers on the car. At the very least, they probably dumped the caps and ran bare wheels to emulate the NHRA stockers. I'll bet very few musclecars were actually driving around with dog dishes back in the day.
I like the Dog dish sleeper look, but it's probably more popular now than it ever was in the 60s. |
Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
Nobody ran dog dish caps,, that was the utmost uncool thing to do......
Meant you were a dork, cheapskate or what ever they called it then. The massive amounts of wheel choices was the first thing to do.....buy wheels ! Today they're a statement to big engine or a muscle sleeper. As we all know.... Or just restored to stock |
Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
Well said by Novadude and Day2 69Z man!
Exactly! |

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
I have seen this car at Pittsburgh World of Wheels several times. When I saw the car it had the tunnel Ram two 4s and yellow plug wires etc. This car is unreal, I love it!!! I agree the car needs to be put back to the way it was. Get rid of the billet pulleys hood hinges etc bring back the tunnel ram 2x4 and yellow plug wires etc. Such a killer car.

Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
That GTO is exactly what I'm talking about. You probably ran it with black rallys and no caps. I did the black steelies and thin whitewalls on the Nova for a while until I changed to the chrome OE wheels (see my recent post in car profiles)

Yes - especially since they were "free". Dad had a friend that worked for the Grand Trunk Railroad. When they first came out Dad mentioned to Bernard that he really liked the look of these "rally wheels". Within a few days Bernard was coming up the driveway with two wheels under each arm. No questions were asked. I still have them, on a shelf in the back garage (two of the wheels are a riveted construction). They are still black. K |
Re: a Day 2 Car at its Finest ,original owner 68 SS 39
Black riveted wheels may have been over the counter purchases.
They came in Grey or Black. But Not Argent ! In 69 all production wheels that I know of were welded. Prior to that the HD cars such as Impalas , Station Wagons and alot of 427 cars had the much stronger riveted wheels.. If I'm not mistaken some 67-68 Z/28's have been seen with riveted wheels also. |
