W-30 - They're still out there!

8 Attachment(s)
This car showed up at Green Street Cruise last night in McHenry. Owner states he found this car on a roadside in Wisconsin with a for sale sign two months ago. 70 W-30, convertible 4 speed, no console with claimed 37,000 original miles. Oh, and the W-27 option. Front fenders replaced and one repaint. States seller did not fully know what he had. Passed on from his dad. Says car will be going to Thornton's for full resto this Fall. These are the only pictures taken.

Wouldn't a preservation restoration be more suitable for a car of this caliber ?.
Documented with high quality pics ?

Yes, that was my thought, but I'm not the expert. Owner definitely knew what he wanted and likely not going to change his mind.

WOW I'll bet the guy didn't know what he had... holy crap!
Yes a well planned preservation on the engine compartment would be preferable for sure, if the paint is bad then take it apart and repaint it but a full restoration will destroy the uniqueness of that car's character.

a "restoration" of any sort, by anyone - regardless of who they think they are, is a sin

Holy hell! That color and W30 & W27 wrapped with a droptop to boot! A restoration on that car would be a felony act!

That is one hell of a roadside find.

By the way, this is why you should educate your kids about what's in the garage...so they don't sell your ZL1 Camaro for $35k on Craigslist after you pass.

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

Wow. There are only approx 25 of the 96 examples which are known to have docs. Very rare find. Burgundy Mist is same as Black Cherry for 1970.

Wow!....what did they make,264 of those W-30 convertibles during 1970?

Only 96 with three pedals and an extra 40hp over the automatics.

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

IMHO shops which do not advise customers options for preservation etc are not looking out for the vehicle owners interests. There are many many furniture refinishing companies which have ruined 250,000 - 1,000,000 pieces of furniture by refinishing them. When the owners find out they spent a $1000 to make their $250,000 piecrust table into a $75,000 table they are not very happy...

I know someone with the engineering hp charts from Oldsmobile and you'd be surprised at the hp difference - it was nowhere near 40 hp stock.

With headers? I think you may be onto something....

"States seller did not fully know what he had." Understatement of the year.

Just Wow. On a roadside with a for sale sign in it? What is this 1976??! Congrats to the new owner and please do not restore that car.

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

Didn't know what he had? In this day and age? Cmon...I go by old women customers of mine and when I ask to buy an old beer sign their husband had they have to tell me they will let me know and then they ask around. Great find though and I agree it should be left more untouched as they lose something when restored. Maybe im jealous because im in WI and I missed it!

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

Doesn't sound like the current owner knows what he has if he wants to restore it. That engine compartment looks way too nice to restore.

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

Here is my take on the new owner's outlook: he probably robbed the car for $30k or something close, figures he can spend a "C-Note" at Thorntons and pocket $200,000 profit. Wouldn't a W-30 stick, ragtop, with a W-27 do 3 $bills or more at a prominent sale? I could be wrong, but I think I see the "investment potential" coming into play here, and not the love or passion of the hobby that most of us possess.

Re: W-30 - They're still out there!

Turns out that I do know this Oldsmobile. While other than the summary of all the correct parts used to make up this car in the late 1980s early 90s it is not a "documented" w-30 4 speed convertible.

Wow, I would love the oppurtunity to see this car in person and add it's info to my database on 70 442 converts. Can anybody put me in touch with the owner?
Thanks in advance.
